this video really puts in perspective how dangerous they are, i've driven on those roads outside of kato countless times to see the magnitude of how big they are is crazy, but have never seen a tornado in RL. I don't recall in my lifetime a tornado actually directly hitting mankato... it would not a be a pretty site, hopefully it will never happen.

Early 2000’s - 2013 was the romantic period for Tornado chasing, it’s before people realized how fast they could kill b/c of the twistex team but was also the time of portable cameras that could stream a somewhat good resolution. And the cameras and the way they are and feel are just different.

Great video Ben. This was the storm event that was the real catalyst for my love of severe weather. My ex-meteorologist dad and I were at the Medford outlets that afternoon and ended up being on the tornado warning in Steele county. Although it didn't produce it was a crazy afternoon. I was 6 years old and still remember it vividly.

Talk about just an absolutely volatile atmosphere. What a rediculous amount of multiple suction vortices when you guys were backing up! I know you'd probably say "anybody would do it", but still, I'm proud of you guys abandoning the chase to check on the house that just took the direct hit! Nice job guys!!!!

That tornado had some of the most wicked churning effect I've seen in a tornado vid. Very nice catch!

Ok, so there are several things I am compelled to mention & point out: -for 2006, this is great video -both were calm throughout the Chase -good decisions were made and both communicated well -fantastic informative narration throughout the Chase, which may seem like a no-brainer but is often incredibly difficult to do while chasing -THERE WAS NO YELLING superlatives, pointing out the obvious like "VIOLENT TORNADO!!!! Big tornado!!! OMG!!! OMFG!!! Etc... -overall, a great video for 11 years ago, informative, no yelling, stayed calm, and of course, you actually shot the tornado. Cheers

He did repeatedly say..."violent tornado" a bit too much. And he does come off as a bit controlling, in a polite/professional manner though. Nice tornado though, and yes, a lot better than Reed Timmer "the screamer."

Wow, so amazing to finally see video of this tornado. I was living in south St. Peter when it happened, but was driving home from the metro area at the time. When I got back to my apartment, other tenants were outside and saying they'd just watched this tornado pass less than 1/2 mile south of the building about ten minutes earlier. And I surely do remember all of the trees down along Hwy 169 just south of town for years afterwards. But this is the first time I've actually seen footage of that tornado. Man, it really was a bad one ... I'm just glad it (barely) missed my house.

Awesome tornado you got in this video. You were close too. I've been on a few myself, but I still haven't seen one of these wedges upclose yet. Saw one way off in the distance near Henessey Oklahoma, but I never got that one on video, because the rain wrapped it as I was stopping to get a video of it.

great chase, guys. this tornado was the first only tornado i've ever seen on my small number of chases (i'm a trained spotter). i 'caught' it on hwy 99 about 3-4 miles s.w. of st. peter after it hopscotched the town of nicollet, where i was living at the time. it crossed the farmland and in my direction, so i had to retreat to st. peter. i stood in awe of it as it roared just south of my position in s. st. peter. dead trees still stand 1 mile s. of st. peter next to the river as a reminder.

The storms come down the MN river valley and then hit Swan Lake, which is a massive lake, slew, swamp just west of Nicollet . It’s the biggest body of water south of mil lacs. The huge tornado in ‘98 started west of Swan then exploded when it hit Swan and kept going to pretty much level St. Peter.

I remember this storm. My family and I drove through Mankato a few weeks later and just North along HWY 169 there were a bunch of trees that used to be cool to watch the sunlight shine through the leaves as you drove by that this storm turned to nothing but sticks sticking out of the ground and in some places looked like the hand of God himself smashed down others and you could see the rotation pattern a bit. Was so surreal to see.

Patti Brooks Believe me..they are scary. My husband and I used to try to chase tornadoes. One day in May 98’ one hit my neighborhood, and damaged my home and many others. We got into the basement just in time. All we could hear was wind, trees falling, shingles, nails and hail hitting our house. The noise of that was unreal. To me it sounded like if you put a bunch of nails, wood, coins and hard boots into your dryer on the highest speed. It got quiet for a second, so I ran back upstairs to look out the window. I thought I’d see our roof gone. The wind hit again and debris went everywhere. I went back into the basement just shaking. Needless to say..I take storms & tornadoes much more seriously now and don’t try to chase them. In Mn, they’ll eventually come to you.
