I live in Los Angeles California. I have never had to endure a tornado and hopefully will never have to. We have our once in a while big earthquakes but I am truly grateful they aren't seasonal. My thoughts and prayers to the people that live in states that have tornadoes every year.

I absolutely agree with you! The visualization of polytunnels at 1:24 does an incredible job at simplifying the complex physics of a tornado. It's fascinating to see how they used such a practical example to demonstrate the swirling dynamics and pressure differences. What did you think about the way they linked that visual to the broader impact of tornadoes on the environment? I'm curious to hear your thoughts!

Chasing is fun, I just started this year. Only local chases for now though. I caught a couple funnel clouds (I think) and nice wall cloud, but it did nothing. I will say this though, It's mostly just a hell of a lot of driving, wear and tear on your car, for not much of a pay off most of the time, so NEVER get your hopes up. For me, it's the experience as a whole. I'd say it's one of the of closest things to an adventure that average Joes like us can experience. Definitely do your homework first though. You do not want to jump into it blind, because these kinds storms can obviously harm you, very easily. One thing that somehow did not occur to me was how much FLOODING I was gonna run into during a chase. That can easily get you if you're not careful. Be safe!!

My 7yr old daughter is starting to learn about weather in school. We live in south Louisiana and we have seen almost everything a person can see from storms. She asked me which was worse, a tornado or a hurricane. I said the simple answer is a hurricane, but there is a lot to answer in this question. I have seen the aftermath of a cat 5 hurricane and it ripped a path at the center about 50 miles wide. This isn't including the storm surge that hit with it. Now I have never personally seen what an EF-5 or F-5 tornado has done. I have seen photos and videos, but that's not the same as being there. I will just guess that the I'll start from the largest tornado that man has seen with their own eyes and have video evidence of it. That tornado was 2.5 miles wide and packed winds over 300mph. It's safe to say that nothing would stand from this monster. The strongest Cyclone that we know of with instruments, it was Hurricane Patricia and it had the highest sustained wind speed ever seen on Planet Earth. 215mph cat 5 with wind gust upwards around 245-260mph at that time. Luckily for everyone on the west coast of Mexico, the storm basically went to pooh soon after that reading. So I guess it depends on what you want to look at to which is the worst. I would say a hurricane cause it will cause a much larger path of destruction then a tornado.

im pretty sure the shelby/miden tornado had doppler winds of over 300 mph for a brief second. The uprooted tree makes me think .. the roots don't look very sturdy from what can be seen in the footage. They are very thin and short in comparison to its trunk and top. Usually there should be much more root-material on a tree that large, the general pattern is that the tree's root system usually looks like the top of the tree. So either the root system was already damaged by something underground, or it was replanted and could not regrow in time the necessary root network, that would have properly supported it. Does anyone know more? Arborists to the front please.
