Monster Transmission Failure?

While driving my 1990 C1500 with a 4L60E built by Monster Transmission, I lost 3rd and 4th gear. I was able to get the truck back to the shop in 2nd gear fortunately.
Monster Transmission offers a 90 day warranty on their transmissions. I’m well outside of that, but they were kind enough to do a complete rebuild (according to them), but I had to pay shipping. I got the transmission back and installed it in the truck. So far, no issues, but given that Monster Transmission was not forthcoming on what the issue was with the transmission, I can only hope that it’s fixed.
What have your experiences been with Monster Transmission?

Make sure what you bought is inside that transmission. My experience on a swapped Monte Carlo build exposed what we payed for from Monster was not inside that 4L60E transmission at all. Should have been 6 spiders, should have been upgraded solenoids, there was a laundry list of upgrades that weren't there. None of it was there. It was a stock rebuild. It's been 8 years now, but we had no luck with Monster getting it fixed or repaired.

March 10, 2018 I installed a Monster Transmissions 4L60E into my dad's 2002 Suburban for him. I installed it BY THE BOOK, flushed the lines, torqued the bellhousing and torque converter bolts to spec, upgraded to a larger cooler, and filled it with Dexron VI as recommended by them. Less than 100 miles later it failed. They hadn't received our core yet, so they were unwilling to warranty the transmission, and their warranty itself is a joke, with us eating the diagnostic fee to have a transmission shop look at it (in spite of the fact I'm an ASE-certified tech that works for a dealership) and half the freight to get their replacement when they finally got our core and were willing to do something about their defective unit. The transmission shop told us that it was an error in assembly that led to the slippage issues in 3rd and 4th (by the time we got it home from the transmission shop it had no 3rd and 4th). Draining the fluid revealed more glitter than the original had when we drained it. I installed their replacement, and found that it leaked from the tailshaft seal. No big deal, I'll just eat the $20 for a seal, it happens. The new seal leaked too, so I pulled the driveshaft again and checked the yoke for wear and taper and found it to be fine. I pulled the tailhousing off and found that they didn't replace the completely worn-out bushing in the tailhousing, and altogether FORGOT the sleeve that goes over the output shaft to restrict fluid flow in this application. Monster Transmission is a joke.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 3 жыл бұрын
I'm very sorry to hear about your experience. BTW, it's very rarely the seal that causes the tail housing leak, it's almost always the bushing. Shame they didn't do a proper rebuild. Thanks for sharing that.

Yep, transmissions get a workout, hence the factory going with 'Lifetime' fluids and like no dipsticks, as people were using wrong fluids, too much or little fluid and complaining... So instead of warranty work and fixing them, just took it out of most users' ability, that said... a number of auto shops messed them up also.

@@ericthecarguy - Brother Eric - you need to check out PerformaBuilt right in PA - they build units that can handle 500+ RWHP yet still offer a 2 year warranty on their builds. Guy told me on the phone, "You will not break this transmission" . Granted it's a stock GMT-900 LMG, but I tow heavily with it, and plan to do a supercharger some time down the road. He told me only to upgrade the torque converter if I go that route to prevent ballooning. That's confidence right there! Sorely missing in this day and age. I can't say enough great things about these guys. They have a Black Edition TH400 that will handle 2k HP!! Even the Black Level 3 that can handle 1k HP has a ONE YEAR warranty. These guys are the real deal. :) You'll thank me later!

Eric just as you did I trusted Monster Transmission to build me an AOD for my 85 Mercury Grand Marquis with a 358 stroker making 345HP & 380 lb-ft at the crank. I requested the transmission to be rebuilt with the “Monster in a box” rebuild kit which on their website is rated at 400HP & 450 lb-ft. I ordered a Thor 1,800-2,200 stall torque converter, also a 11-1/4” tail-shaft housing with correct output shaft, new AOD dipstick, 1-1/2 cases of Monster transmissions signature brew of Dexron III Compatible synthetic trans fluid, aluminum trans pan with a drain plug and I bought the WOWanty extended warranty as well. Three weeks later I received the box and inside was the transmission with leaking front pump case gasket, leaking manual lever & throttle lever seals, incorrect 10-1/4” tail-shaft housing & short output shaft, stock 1,600-1,800 stall torque converter. I called them up and explained the issues, they would not believe me about the leaks unless I took pictures and sent them to the warranty Dept. I literally had to argue with them until I finally got Kelsey “the grandson of the owners” of Monster Transmission, he said even with warranty I had to pay shipping to send it back to them with the incorrect torque converter as well.
@80sfordguy
@80sfordguy 3 жыл бұрын
Two weeks later it arrived with the correct 11-1/4” tail-shaft housing and long output shaft, no visible leaks but they still sent me the wrong stock torque converter again painted a different color in a different box. I called the again, had to argue AGAIN and this time they had the absolute worst customer service and refused to send the correct torque converter. They then informed me the extended warranty was a diminishing return warranty, meaning the percent of coverage diminishes as months go by until one year is up. I was told it’s 100% for 90days, 80% for 6months, 60% for 9months and 40% until one year is up. The common warranty is 100,000mi or 3 years whichever comes first. I got stuck with a stock torque converter I overpaid for, crappy customer serves and on top of that once I installed the trans and filled it with fluid the manual lever shaft & throttle lever shaft seals are still leaking. I drove it once less than a mile just to check R, 1, 2, 3 & OD gears, they do but the tranny take longer than normal amount of time to shift in all Forward gears and it feels lazy when it does shift. The car has been parked ever since due to the loss of my job from the covid19 pandemic and the death of my mother this past January.

Ive been building the 4l60e for over a year now and its not a really complicated unit, couple of things you don't wanna skimp on are the apply pistons and frictions. I only use hi-per blue pistons and raybestos GPZ100 frictions for 3/4 and give it .030 to .035 clearance (the book tells you between .060 to .086)I also use pinless accumulator pistons (less leakage) one thing that people miss when air checking the 4l60e is where the input shaft is pressed into the input drum that can cause 3/4 to go out too.

The same thing happened to my son's Corvette. It turned out that the common problem is the "sun shell". The upgraded one has a heat-treated hub. He started home from work and the first two complete shifts from stop went fine. The third time it went out of second and immediately in what seemed to be neutral. I haven't heard great things about Monster. We had his Corvette fixed at a local shop who showed us what they had done, all of the pieces they replaced, and the explained why they did it. That was about 8 years ago and it's still running perfectly.

One word combined from two words - PERFORMABUILT - they're right next door to you in PA, and have hands-down the BEST business practices and ethics I have ever come across in this day and age. GREAT people! Extremely happy with my Heavy Hauler with all kinds of upgrades inside - just got back Wednesday afternoon from a 3 week, nearly 5K mile road trip from MA to FL and back, towing my enclosed single axle 6x12 trailer with maybe 500 lbs. onboard. Light load, but it performed FLAWLESSLY! Actually feels like it gained more torque! Must be that FTI torque converter they use. 100% American built with American parts, and craftsmanship we used to expect back in the 20th Century. I had the exact same failure on a bone stock (aside from a Hypertech Power Programmer III plug-in, firmer tune) 4L60E in my '07 Silverado 1500 at 103k miles. No warning whatsoever! Like a light switch, I 100% lost 3 and 4. Amsoil Signature Series fluid looked like the day I installed it, 50k miles ago. This truck has been a lemon since day 1, so no shock there ... Proof is in the pudding - 2 year warranty with these guys. That's all you need to know. :) FREE mainland shipping too.

With all of the comments saying "take it Precision Transmission" or "Monster Transmissions are bad" I'd like to put in my two cents. Monster already rebuilt the transmission for Eric and, while they didn't tell him the cause of the problem if any, he seems happy with this rebuild. Since he's happy, I'd recommend he keep enjoying the transmission as is with any quality of life tweaks to the 1-2 shift he can safely make. Monster may be terrible, I have no experience with them so I don't know, but a broken watch is still right twice a day. As for taking it to Precision, they have stated multiple times in their videos that they will no longer do carry-out work because of installation damage. They may make an exception for Eric but they may not, that would mean Eric would either have had to drive the truck there without 4th gear and a mushy 3rd gear ( or possibly worse if something happens later) or have it transported on the back of a truck both would likely be a painful and expensive process to go through. In my opinion it would be worthwhile, but the process may be to much trouble for Eric to justify. So again, the transmission is working now and Eric is happy so he should just be able to enjoy his truck. If and only if it gives him transmission issues again, I wholeheartedly encourage him to take it over to Precision Transmission whatever it takes, but it's his truck and his money and I don't see any reason to mess with either.

Eric, on those 700r's, that tv cable has to be set spot on. Being a bit off can cause issues like an early 1-2 shift or third gear especially going in an out. Dealt with it a ton on my 92 silverado until it ate the trans. Had it rebuilt, guy set it right, and it barked 2nd gear from that day forward. Still have the trans sitting in my garage actually. That being said, youd be better off getting a refund on that monster trans and going with a mild built gearstar.

@@ericthecarguy That’s what I was hoping you’d do this time, it’d have been interesting to see what the culprit was, but I think we all understand you can’t always do everything and most of us are grateful for what you can do on this channel so I must say thank you for another great video & God Bless you & your family! These transmissions aren’t bad to rebuild because there’s so much information out there you just have to take the time to learn, but like you said it’s also possible it’s a wiring problem, but one thing not everyone who rebuilds these knows about is changing the case ball & capsule (captured check ball) if the ball doesn’t seal in the end of the captured case it’s in, the 3-4 clutch won’t work properly, you’d test this by setting the transmission upside down & stacking some blocks under the rear to somewhat level it (once the transmission is already completely tore down) & mix a small tube of 50% transmission fluid & 50% mineral spirits & put some in the channel of the case side of the valvebody where the captured check ball is (near where the servo would be) fluid should leak into the servo bore but if it leaks into the case through a small hole by the servo apply pin bore then eventually the 3-4 clutch pack will burn up, rebuild after rebuild until it’s changed although this would take some time to burn the clutches as in your case which interests me, although there are many smaller possibilities for 3-4 clutch failure. You may already know this but if you come into this situation again & decide to rebuild it yourself & need info on pretty much every single part in the 4L60E, Transmission Bench has a great KZbin channel that goes really in depth. That’s mostly how I rebuilt my first one successfully & I’m 21 so if I could do it I know you could too. But again thank you for all the information on KZbin if it wasn’t for channels like yours (and reading articles online) I’d still only be able to do basic bolt on stuff so I hope you find satisfaction in knowing you’ve contributed to helping so many people just like me. Thanks again & God Bless!

I would guess-ta-mate that they installed a "shift kit" in the valve body (that is if you received the exact same trans. back) with tighter springs behind the spool valves, especially on the 1-2 valve. Just watching the video of before and after, there seemed to be a more positive shift on the 1-2 shift, hence the high rpm "chirp" of the tires on the shift. There really isn't really much that goes wrong internally in the 4L60's, from my experience they are pretty much as bullet-proof as the GM 440-T's. Just a hunch, just glad you got a good working unit. Happy bow-tie-ing.

I drove the car 2500 miles with that monster, then the 2 4 band broke. Monster would not honor their warranty. Price's transmission on Witchduck in Virginia Beach built me a budget 700-R4 that lasted ten years through the next five engines, a rear diff upgrade, hot laps at the dragstrip, multiple burnout contests, and countless streetraces. If they did anything, they probably pulled the input drum dropped a new 3-4 pack in and sent it back. 3-4 failure is the most common failure in these units, and a stock clutch pack simply will not live long behind that engine. Theres various ways to go about upgrading that, but I doubt they did.
