In this video I dissect 2 D16Y7 Honda engines to find the cause of the failures they had. One engine had a catastrophic failure, a broken connecting rod, the other had a severe overheat condition. In addition to the dissections, I also provide information on vital engine parts and their functions as well as what to look for when they fail.
See the links below for more videos on these engines and the cars they came out of.
I hope you find this information useful!

It looks funny, rides funny, but is reliable. I'll do the preventative and the general maintenance. I wish I could throw parts at it when something needs changing, but spares are getting scarce. However, Eg and newer Civics can still be dailied. Unless it has the potential to be a low milage garage-queen, have fun with it.

8:30 The spring in the pump isn't there to 'create' pressure, it is there to provide pressure relief (pressure limit) so the pump does not self-destruct from hydro-locking or blow something elsewhere when the oil isn't flowing out fast enough through the pump output otherwise, such as on cold-start where oil viscosity is much higher and most clearances are tighter.
@ancientapparition1638

theres a trick to increase the pressure using shims on the pressure relief spring so one can point at that and go 'it controls pressure' but yeah youre technically correct

With engine #1, I originally thought that the rod let go from overreving, but after seeing the crank, I figure the rod big end welded up to the crank and then bent the rod during the stroke and then caused the rod end weld to fail.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was a lot of heat created by a lack of lubrication. Likely hot enough to not only weld the connecting rod to the crank, but also enough to soften the metal in the connecting rod causing it to fail.

The whole engine assembled with 14mm (12?) bolts lol. That is some serious damage but I have to applaud Honda for building such a stout bottom end and oiling system. my 1989 civic hatch "standard" developed a brutal overheating issue after getting rear ended... It had *no* coolant leaks. I removed the thermostat and checked the water pump impeller in case it had fallen off or worn the impeller away. I was able to drive slow on backroads with the fans running but as soon as I got on the highway - super hot. I nursed it 300 miles home and tore it apart and found nothing inside to explain it. Turns out the guts of the muffler broke in the accident and restricted the exhaust, then the cat melted and restricted it further. It already had a quarter million miles on it so I swapped in a low mile JDM and header system and was good to go.

I pretty much keep the whole engine, but then again, i do play with casting, so it's useful to me. Especially if it's an aluminium block, very useful. Edit: to other people who take engines or want to take engines apart, i have this trick/tip. I got one of those shallow sand playgrounds in the corner of my shop, only added one of those lake bottom membrane plastics on the bottom and put fine sand on top and clay powder. This serves as my take apart pit, and it saves so much hassle with cleanup. Highly recommended.
@bluecar5556
@bluecar5556 4 жыл бұрын
Another idea is to clean the outside of the engine with degreaser and hot water before working on it. The sand is an abrasive and I would want to keep the parts clean to prevent damage.

Regarding saving old parts, I've always thought it was better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I use 0W/30 oil in my volvo xc70 diesel, sadly i am well overdue an oil change, but without money and access to a garage without paying for it i'd have to push on it a bit more but i have topped it off and i keep an eye on the level since it pushes out a bit of oil from the crank case venting, i will get it done once i get working again

In situations like that you can go old-school: change _just the filter_ and top up the oil. I believe the XC70 filter is accessible from the top, so you shouldn't need a jack or much oil. Hopefully things have improved for you so this advice isn't necessary, but who knows what the future holds?

@@Azlehria Not at the moment but i am working on it :) but i think it might depend on the engine too, i got the old 5 cylinder diesel, it might be on top but it could be on the bottom aswell, but i do have a small oil leak and i suspect the PCV valve so i need a top up from time to time

@@volvofreak86 Okay, near as I can tell if you have an XC70 _not_ a V70 XC (2003 and up), you should have a replaceable-element filter. Those are almost always accessed from the top. From the front of the car, with the engine cover removed, look down the near side of the block between the turbo piping and the accessory bracket for a black plastic cap with a large hex head on top. That would be your filter housing. Earlier (V70 XC) models apparently used a _Volkswagen_ engine, which used both replaceable-element and spin-on filters. Good luck if you have one of those; VW seems to go out of their way to be inconsistent and confusing.

oil channels for cylinder #3 are narrower than the rest on D16 blocks so running them low on oil a lot usually leads to knock/thrown rod on #3 first

See the description for the other D series I tore apart. I believe that was also #4. Thanks for the comment.

How in the world were you able to get that first engine to start and run I’ll never know. That’s the most amazing thing. It sure is hard to kill a Honda motor

I have a 92 SI hatch with 462 thousand kms on it sitting in the yard because the compression is so low in hole number 4 that it’s only running on 3 cylinders. I’m gonna pull er apart just to check it out. Looks easy

Thanks for reminding me of what will happen to my '09 4cyl accord. At this point oil is considered a prescription and wondering if there's a way to make an oil tank to IV into the engine.
