I think the reason why they haven't stopped tobacco manufacturing yet is that it would hit people that are addicted hard, leading them to smoke illegally and have their lives destroyed by it. So instead they're trying to decrease the number of smokers before enforcing a ban.

I have a few points about the video. You say a lot of big numbers, and the thing with bigger numbers is that it is hard to put a value to them. For instance, I have no idea how much a few million tonnes of waste is. Sure, I know it's a lot, but I have no idea how much it is in relation to other sources of waste. I am not telling you do this, but with big numbers it is really easily to fool people into believing something is way worse then it actually is.

That's still second hand smoking. If you've ever smoked around a crowd, you're basically contributing to a population's poor health unknowingly.

Not _entirely_ true. To quote Wikipedia, "The Tobacco Control Act of Bhutan was enacted by parliament on 16 June 2010. It regulates tobacco and tobacco products, banning the cultivation, harvesting, production, and sale of tobacco and tobacco products in Bhutan." The rest of the world should also move in that direction. Perhaps one way to transition towards that goal would be to require anyone purchasing or consuming tobacco to have a license that will only be granted to those who already habitually smoke as of a certain date. This would make it effectively illegal for anyone who isn't already a smoker to legally acquire cigarettes or other tobacco products after that date. Anyone with a smoker's license would be required to have an annual consultation with a doctor to discuss strategies for quitting. The goal should be to virtually eradicate smoking within about a decade.

Iv never smoked. I lost my Mother when she was only 53 to lung cancer which spread to her throat and liver. Her death was hideous and it will never leave my mind. My father died at 72 from emphysema and suffered for two years with it before he too died a undignified death. It use to take him nearly half an hour to have a simple shave. As a result of all that passive smoking I took in growing up, has lead to me now, at 56, have mild respiratory problems........ all this directly linked to smoking. Any smoker who has kids I hope they [the kids] don't have to watch you die an ugly death. Start thinking about the health and impact smoking has on others, both physically and mentally. Smoking is here to stay, but the confinements to where a smoker can smoke should be massively reduced. I mean massively. It's dirty, disgusting and deadly. So no! You shouldn't have the right to poison my air. Smoke your hearts out, but go far away to do it. Oh, and by the way. No smoker of today should be given any medical preferences and should always be put at the bottom of the list when it comes to medical aid, so long as it is smoking related of course.

No. Ideally the manufacturing of modern cigarettes and their toxic substances should be banned. Tobacco should be legal, but the additives during production should be illegal/banned. In turn people won't get addicted to the nicotine. If there is any addiction to be had it will be to the habit of use, not the physical addiction. Also the removal of all the other toxins will reduce the cancer death rate significantly. It will never happen because money makes the world go round, but that is what should happen.

It's your choice to harm yourself and the people around you. Have fun. And also the difference between cars and cigarettes - there is a risk of becoming injured whilst driving a car if you crash, whereas cigarettes will always be bad for your health. Cars have a useful purpose, cigarettes don't.

yeah, if something kills you in a year of smoking it or digesting it, it's a fairly good idea to ban it, imagine selling small sticks of bleach that you heat up and inhale every few days, if the entire world started to sell those and they got popular. they would be banned becuase you're selling bleach in a bottle. Cigarettes aren't far off that, they have tar inside, the same acidic chemicals as toilet cleaner, and even bronchodilators so the smoke can access your lungs. without the chemical of bronchodilators your body would reject the smoke, meaning that your body naturally rejects cigarettes.

1. There's things other than cigarettes (reconstituted tobacco) made from tobacco leaves as well, which are not addictive in the same way cigarettes are and not harmful in the same ways. 2. It's the individuals choice like with any other substance, like alcohol, you might as well suggest banning that, and you can forget about legalising drugs for recreational use too.

I am not a smoker, none of my family are and I personally find it a bit disgusting. However, I find it very disturbing when people with good intentions say ‘let’s just ban it’ about anything they don’t like or is dangerous. People in free countries should be free to make bad decisions and do risky things - as far as possible the state should look to facilitate an individual’s freedom. This means the freedom to smoke tobacco, drive fast cars, go base-jumping, own guns, swim in rough seas etc. Where a societal cost is incurred those who partake in such activities can be asked to pay for it, but unless that individual is personally harming others then banning their pleasure is unacceptable. Not to mention on this particular subject, banning tobacco would create a different problem - just look at the situation with illegal drugs now.

It would be difficult to simply ban cigarettes. It would harm the economy, manufacturers, and encourages people to illegally obtain them. I live in the U.K, and here smoking is becoming more and more unacceptable in public, but people still smoke in their own homes. Every packet of cigarettes, by law, comes with warning labels about the dangers of smoking, sometimes there's gruesome images of damaged lungs - to discourage people from buying them. There's also a law that you cannot smoke inside a car with a passenger under 18, and it's illegal to smoke in any public building.
