Monsters, Horror, and the Macabre in Christian Experience

Halloween is a Christian holiday, the eve of All Saints Day. But does that matter if our poisoned and broken society encourages it as a celebration if wickedness, evil, and ugliness? Should the faithful avoid masquerades and stop their kids from trick-or-treating? More broadly, what is the proper Christian attitude toward monsters, the macabre, and ghost stories?

It is best as catharsis and opposition of fear or horror; it is worse as consumerist cynicism or outright celebration of darkness.

I like your take. I don't think God is going to be too mad or mad at all with anybody that they went trick or treating when they were kids or adults. There are worse things to worry about in life to being a good Christian.

As a Protestant, my favourite rebuke to people who claim that Easter/Christmas is pagan is "Oh, you mean that Christ is reconciling all things to Himself like He promised? Based!" I don't celebrate Halloween though - October 31st is Reformation Day! 😎

Yes, exactly. In a Christianizing world, pagan temples, symbols, and holidays will be consecrated to Christ. In a paganizing world, Christian holidays will be paganized. Not one step back! The line must be drawn here!
