Monsters, about Lyle and Erik Menendez, has been the most watched on Netflix all week. I was told to blind react as the first episode is centered around a therapy session and it was swimming in ethical dilemmas!

This was so interesting!! Would you ever react to Lyle and Erik’s actual testimonies about their abuse? They’re available on youtube. This would be very insightful I suppose.

I don’t understand why you’re saying that in this case the therapist should break confidentiality and tell the police. It is my understanding that they can only do that when the patient says they’ll harm themselves, someone else or the therapist. But other than Erik insinuating he’s had thoughts of suicide there was nothing there in that session that says the therapist should break confidentiality. Even Erik talking about suicide isn’t necessarily clear but if he wanted to break confidentiality it would have to be based on that. But at 6:14 you say he would have to tell the police that his client confessed to killing their parents because otherwise he would be a conspirator to this act, but that doesn’t make any sense since the crime has already been committed. I fail to see why their therapist should go running to tell the police and break patient confidentiality, the patient in question isn’t talking about harming anyone, he’s talking about how the harm has already been done. And you also say at 12:51 that’s it’s unethical for the therapist to not tell the police when in reality it’s unethical for him TO tell the police, because *again* the crime has already been committed. There is no threat of harm therefore no reason to break confidentiality.

Those are the rules for therapists in the UK. Different countries and states have different regulations. In CA, this would be considered confidential and it would be unethical to tell the police. In the UK I believe therapists are required to break confidentiality even for past crimes

@@Laureena7ooooooohhhhhhh thank you! I actually kinda knew that but I forgot! I really appreciate you letting me know! I think it’s def better when therapists are allowed to keep confidentiality in this case.
