Bardem is smth else in this show... This show is worth watching for Javier Bardem's role alone!! It's brilliant and scary as hell! Just as the commenter below wrote, Bardem was more scary in this than in The Old Country for Old Men! The scene with the male prostitute, when he is playing the Roman Emperor in a fetish sex role-play, was scary and disgusting; the first family argument, when Kitty pulls Lyle's wig off, and Jose suddenly, in a fit of rage, smashes the plate against the wall, gave me almost a heart attack, and is hard to get through. I personally loved the show, and I think the case is subtly, and fairly analyzed.

lol some people here are mad because Murphy didn't go for easy answers... They literally portrayed all the awful abuse towards the boys and Kitty, and Kitty's depression and her as an enabler of her husband. If anything, Murphy showed that Jose was a scary psycho who changed according to circumstances, when the change fit his agenda. He only started to be 'better' when he decided that he had to make it in politics himself, because 'the boys were disappointment' but the 'change' was superficial, exactly as sociopaths act, it's literally in the show. On the other hand, Murphy also asks interesting questions that the hardcore fans of the brothers don't want to answer, but we need to ask this, as even if your side is sure you are 10000% right, it's not that simple. The only truth we know for sure in this case is that we really don't know what happened there, inside this house for all these years, yes, there was abuse and control by Jose part, and it is shown brutally on the show, but the fact is, there were also lies and sociopathic behaviors of the boys, and literally other part of their family also said it. To this day, the family is divided between believing them vs not believing them, and THAT'S a FACT. Some cousins and two aunts are pro-brothers, and other cousins and uncles are anti-brothers. If you wanted Murphy to just brainlessly repeat one side of the story, you actually don't understand what makes great TV, and what actually is close to real life - life is always complex, truth is complex in cases like this, and this is what Murphy portrays brilliantly. He asks questions and doesn't give you easy answers, and for me, that was the most accurate portrayal of this awful case. Also, two things can exist together. They were abused, and Murphy& co literally showed this, but they were also very, very disturbed young men because they were products of their sick and toxic environment, and Murphy also showed this absolutely brilliantly! For me, it is finally balanced, raw, brutal, deep, and an excellent show about this case! And Javier Bardem as Jose is absolutely terrifying! He is an abusive sadist in this, so idk what are you talking about!
@luchahn8430Ай бұрын
You’re right. When I was their age. I acted like them too. My dad was physically abusive and emotionally abusive. He never abused me sexually but I still had a lot of pain and anger growing up especially because my case was like Erik’s. He targeted me not the other siblings. Which made it worse for me. Abuse is bad enough but being the one targeted is more painful than any abuse anyone can experience. I grew up to be like Lyle, angry, making sure I was never vulnerable or humiliated by anyone else. My family wasn’t as rich as theirs but, if we were, I’m sure I would have called the alpha Romeo or anything he would have bought for me a ‘shit car’ as well. You’re very right, the truth is complicated. But you know what, you can’t call Lyle a bad person. If he didn’t morph into what he was, what else was he gonna become? Hurt, broken, and a failure in life ? Because when you’re abused there are only two outcomes. Become like Lyle or become hurt and broken and fail at everything like your abuser said you would. As for Erik he was portrayed as sweet and innocent but there are layers to it. I think he knew what he was doing. He didn’t ’I told the truth because it’s the truth!’ You’re never that innocent at 18! He wanted, needed to be likable after what happened to him. In any case great comment. I agree with you and people berating Murphy don’t get it

I don't think everything that is depicted in show implied it happened in real life, it was just a version of brothers, and episode 6 shows completely different Jose, just like lies of Lyle of Jose mocking him for his posture/speaking. I think ultimately creators were on side of Jose/Kitty in this

it was a brilliant show that portrayed complex reality that we will NEVER know for sure, no matter what some childish, blind Menendez cheerleaders say! It painted all the perspectives possible - the public perception at first at the beginning of the show which was a brilliant choice, the boys' perspective, the lawyers' experiences, etc. And it absolutely showed brutal abuse in that house. All the actors are fantastic, but Bardem is a genius! I mean Javier Bardem in this role terrified me more than in the role of Anton Chigurh in No Country for the Old Man! He deserves all the awards for this role, he was just a pure, scary, unpredictable psychopath in this!! All the people who have doubts - I recommend you watch it for Bardem's acting alone, although it has many brutal, disturbing scenes!

The series makes you feel sympathy for them if you belief in what they said they were through and it also makes you realized how they brutally murdered their parents and were rich spoiled kids.
