A big factor of why Planet Sheen flopped the way it did, was because the comic relief should never be the main focus of the story. Carl is less of a comic relief than Sheen because he sometimes plays a major role in helping Jimmy on his adventures. Sheen is still a good character, but he plays more of a similar role to Patrick Star.

Comedy RELIEF, as in, relief from the rest of the plot that can be funny _but one you actually care about and take seriously because of all the good writing than isn't just stupid humor_ . [Insert 'perfectly balanced' Thanos meme here.] Like, cilantro might enhance the flavor of a great dish - but just eating practically a ton of cilantro by itself will probably induce vomiting, even if you're not allergic to it or anything. Eh, Fanboy and Chum Chum was better imo. I legitimately can't remember laughing at Planet Sheen, ONCE, even as a 9 y/o. FB&CC did get a few laughs out of me from time to time, and it at least didn't have any sort of attachment to something that was actually great. I've said it once and I'll say it again: Goddard should have gotten his own spin-off show instead of Sheen. Think about it, Goddard is actually intelligent, has twice more personality, and is a lot more interesting of a character than Sheen ever was, and he rarely got any screentime in the show, despite being a main character and being very resourceful and useful to the plot . Plus, he only got ONE episode that ever gave him any focus.

This show gives me quite a depressing feeling. An important character of Jimmy Neutron who really filled his role, gets stranded, but that's the only thing Jimmy Neutron about it. There are only callbacks in the first episodes, but nothing else bears the slightest resemblance to the original show. And the fact that it doesn't end with Sheen returning to Earth is just heart wrenching, seeing that DVD case referred to as the "complete series" gives such a depressing feel, knowing that this is how Jimmy Neutron ends, with a beloved character stuck on an alien planet forever, with the only implications of him returning being from an episode of the original show, where they visit the future.

Hoo boy, this show. Sheen was funny in the original show because his screen time didn’t overstay its welcome, he had an actual personality beyond “idiot”, and he felt sincere (if hopelessly misguided and clueless) in the ways he interacted with his friends. Here? We get to watch Sheen do stupid nonsense for no reason (note to writers: stupid characters aren’t an excuse to do anything for no reason; they do things for understandable but stupid reasons!) for twenty-two straight minutes. Add in some characters who very blatantly rehash the roles of the original show’s cast members like Carl (if you can’t do without Carl, don’t have Sheen get stuck in space!), plots that must have been written while tripping balls, Sheen completely forgetting about his home and friends, and cheap CGI, and you have a stinker of a show barely worth discussion or remembering.

The podcast involves Rob hosting it in Carl's voice and he says "I was just in a costume with lots of makeup" in response to a fan question about doppy. Okay imma say this because I’ve been dying to and this is related to it so I can comment here, right?? Sheen and Libby had the most underrated ship of- quite possibly- ALL TIME. I’ve only just started re-watching the original series now, and I have no idea if it ever comes up again, but there’s a valentines episode where the boys each fall in love with one of the female cast. Sheen falls for Libby, and honestly he handles it exactly like a boy of his personality and age would. He shares his own interests, gives her gifts that are of sentimental value to him but aren’t very pretty or worthwhile to anyone else. But here’s the catch.. Libby recognizes how much it means to him, how sweet it all is. She can translate his love language, and I know ADULTS who can’t do that!! And when his hyperactive nature *does* start to become a problem she tells him flat out and asks politely for him to tone it down. He calms himself and lowers his voice to accommodate her, and she thanks him for the effort and the valentines card and gives him a kiss on the cheek. She isn’t demanding, he isn’t unwilling to change, and they’re both grateful to each other for the slack that they give. It was so very sweet, and their shared secret of Sheen still liking her and her still holding onto his first UltraLord action figure- even as disfigured and melted as it was- after Jimmy reverses the love pheromones adds a slightly more sincere touch to his character. Even if that episode is all there is to that, it’s still pure gold, and I wanted to mention it.

Never have I used/heard the word "painful" to describe something bad to the extent that it LITERALLY causes me pain. Until now. Some people think "Oh, it's a kid's show, those don't have to be 'smart' or make a whole lot of sense." Then I'll point them to Avatar, Spongebob (at least as of around the time Friend or Foe? came out, and prior to that. That's around the time when I moved on, so that's what I'm aware of), Jimmy Neutron, and maybe even occasional moments from Chowder that I saw. Mung gave a speech on how "Women are born with these things called...'expectations.'"
