Hugh Neutron (Jimmy's father) is an absolute gold character. He's one of the few comedic characters to successfully pull of the difficult balance of being a humorously dumb character (like early seasons Patrick from Spongebob) without it becoming an annoying shtick, and a huge part of that is he's innocent, kind-hearted, and often willfully silly. He also manages to be one of the few long-running comedic characters to avoid getting flanderized throughout the series. The show had good writers who had good restraint on that.
@anthonydeadman

Not to mention Mark DeCarlo himself is just as hilarious and awesome as his portrayed character. Guy has an amazing sense of humor and to this day has a lot of fun as Hugh be it from internet memes using the character or just giving folks a good laugh with a line or two. Genuinely think the character of Hugh Neutron became a part of him in a way.

It's been awhile since I've seen the show, but from what I remember, I do agree with you. I remember Cindy seeming to be jealous of this one girl that Jimmy does have a crush on. I did also hear that there was another season of the show planned which would have seen Jimmy and Cindy become a couple, but the studio that animated the show went bankrupt and ended the series. It's a shame as I would have liked to see that development in their relationship and how they and their friends handled it.

Fun Fact: Originally, Jimmy's name was going to be "Jonathan Quazar", but his name was changed to "James Isaac Neutron" (a name inspired by "Sir Isaac Newton" that Davis came up with while walking his dog) 'cause Nickelodeon said his original name sounded too similar to similar-sounding named characters that they didn't want him to be confused with such as "Jonathan Quest" or "Captain Quazar".

This is what 2000s nickelodeon especially had. Charm. The writing is surprisingly clever. The characters are simple but memorable. And they could just be so creative. Spongebob, Fairly Odd Parents, Danny Phantom, and Jimmy Neutron were just a few examples how shockingly good this era of nickelodeon was. They're shows that may have been for kids, but they were clever enough that even adults could get some good laughs.

And for shows that are mostly for kids, sometimes they handled pretty adult things. My Brother's Keeper is one of my all time favorite episodes in ANY cartoon, because of how it handles depression, how others can leech off your own negative energy, and how you can't help others unless they want to be helped. There's a really nice scene between Danny and Jazz where she calls him a great brother, that she's proud of him. But Danny brushes her off. And even he's surprised at his own actions but too in his own head to understand why. It's only towards the end, when cornered by Spectra that he realizes that he'd been so busy dumping on himself, he couldn't others supporting him, and was able to bring himself out of that depressive state. Seeing him fly so freely at the end, is just an iconic moment.

@@ViltrumiteIsRite99there was a pretty good period of time where animation didn't get much support, then when it did it immediately went mega commercial with every kids show selling toys. It seems like in the '90s it started calming down and around that time creators seemed to have more freedom with how shows were handled. I think the '90s were a great breeding ground that paved the way for some really interesting and different cartoons in the 2000s.

4:54 One thing I really liked about this movie and show was the subtle character actions in the background. Here, a random kid greets them with his bike bell and Hugh waves at him. That does absolutely nothing for the story and probably means nothing, but it adds a touch of humanity to the scene and makes their world feel a bit more real.
@memesarekeem
@memesarekeem 2 жыл бұрын
You're actually wrong. Not only is this moment monumental to Hugh's character development and an integral part of the story, but it also set a precedent for the rest of animation as a whole. This scene alone has mere Neon Genesis Evangelion levels of nuance and depth; to underestimate it completely and utterly lacks insight. Hugh's hand movement alone tells us a multifold story which takes hours to unpack.

From an objective quality standpoint? You can argue positioning, but Nickelodeon's "Top 4" (and, sorry, the distance between these four and the rest is not even close) is Hey Arnold, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Invader Zim and Danny Phantom. Some combo of SpongeBob, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly OddParents, The Loud House, Legend of Korra, The Wild Thornberrys, Rugrats and My Life as a Teenage Robot can form the rest of a reasonable Top 10.
@gars129
@gars129 2 жыл бұрын
Spongebob, Fairly Oddparents, and Jimmy Neutron definitely, but the 4th one is a tough competition between Avatar and Danny Phantom. I could argue Rugrats in my case, but I was a very Late 90s/Early 2000s kid and after 2001 Rugrats was irrelevant as it had peaked in the Early 90s anyways.

@reappermen

@1234Studios Off the shelf refers to the fact that jimmy neutron didn't use a custom rendering pipe and software, but standardized commercially available one. Anyone with the money could just go to a specialist store and buy a copy to use. A good comparison is todays engines for video games. Anyone can just grab a copy of Unrela Engine 5, and make a game with it. But e.g. EA made their own engine (Frostbite) themselves, which is not available. So unless you work for an EA studio, you simply can't use it for anything, or even get your hands on a copy.

Yup, way too many comic relief characters are written in such a way that they cross over into annoying the audience when they should be annoying the characters way more. Like, it’s fine to poke fun at the audience too for the sake of comedy, but it’s a delicate balance in making sure the character still remains likable for the audience to give it a pass.

You know, I agree that it hasn't aged perfectly, but oddly enough, it's probably one of the better looking CGI films to modern eyes because they deliberately WEREN'T trying to be cutting edge. They knew their CGI looked old, even by the standards of the time, but they embraced the simple look to let them do creative things that they wouldn't be able to do with better tech due to a lack of time and/or budget.
