Mont Écho - The Lost Resorts, Episode 16

Known by few, Mt. Écho was once a major Quebec ski resort, sustaining a significant vertical drop with many ski trails. However, it’s demise in the late 1970s was a foreshadowing of the collapse of many other Quebec ski resorts decades later. While today, trees have grown over the locations of former chairlifts and ski runs, the legacy of Mt. Écho still lives on.

Thank you so much for this video. I have memories of skiing Mount Echo 50 years ago and visited with my kids back in 2004 and was amazed how nature reclaimed the mountain even 20 years ago. It's true, if you didn't get enough speed skiing from the upper part of the mountain to the lower part of the mountain, the result was a lot of arduous walking. Mount Echo holds a special place in my heart and one of my fondest childhood memories was skiing Mount Echo and the rest of the Ski East areas (Bromley, Owls Head, Mount Orford, and Mount Sutton) on Christmas and February school vacations.

An informative description of a complex mountain. Of note, there were two additional tracks down the mountain. One even further out than Hell's Gate which was not on the map for insurance reasons. The other ran down through the woods, a glade with powder. Not many knew of it except patrolers.

At the base of Mount Echo was a motel and an equestrian farm. I attended the wonderful Mount Echo Horsemanship Camp there for several summers circa late 1960s and early 1970s, Nola Ryan, proprietor.

Great video, btw, I could actually make up almost all of the trails from Google maps, it's hard to tell but I could map out a lot of the trails based on the tree colors, keep up the the great work.

You have more patience than me on Google Earth 🤣. Like you, I was able to make out about 2-3 trails, but wanted it to be complete. Rather than guess, I just decided to do trail map only.

Mont Glen, Quebec. Closed 2004. Was supposed to re-open last year with new owners, but plans changed and the mountain is still closed.
