I love larch chair. The Tower 12/lookout chutes area is so fun. Good slack country that brings you back in bounds, rock garden, bobcat trees, so much fun terrain on this chair

The story about Marshall as a ski area is certainly correct, but it seems like you should have continued with the present: Marshall is now a fantastic mountain biking park. Lots of races, for both locals and national competitions. Classes on mountain biking. Really good set of trails from friendly green trails to tough black diamonds. Of course, the mountain is also open to hikers in any weather and skiers/snowboarders can run some laps if we get a decent winter.

Awesome doc. I learned to ski there in ‘76-77. We’d take the bus from Northgate mall. If I recall the chairlift didn’t have a safety bar and was pretty high up so it took me awhile to get the courage to take it.

I lived here late 90s early 2000s, it was in ok shape while living there was getting pretty trashed right till it was brought down tho. We lived in the apartments on the bottom level of chalet over looking lake . I'm sure the building should have been condemned but we survived . Lol The Camp ground was still operational. Summers were fun and busy, winters was good fishing and hauling our tube's and snowboard up the hill to go down. The chalet was creepy and haunted as F . as young teen girls we would meet camper boys and take them to chalet and scare them !! Lolll Good memories and bad at that place.

Nice job compiling the information on this video. We skied there in the 90's. I remember the runs being quite flat, except for the very top of them. Most of the vertical was probably the first 25% or so of the runs. There are a few 90's resorts from my youth that have since closed sadly. Loretto & Cedar Highlands to name two others.
@Skier72
@Skier72 20 күн бұрын
Yeah, it did look rather flat. Kind of crazy that it was only 1 of 2 resorts that were never private clubs (with Blue being the other). I want to do Loretto at some point. Cedar Highlands is also an interesting one, they had a Poma quad at some point.

@@Skier72 Loretto was a great hill to learn to ski at. Most runs were quite tame. Although they only had a rope tow and T-bars which were not so forgiving for newbies.

I worked at Dease Lake on the Stewart Cassiare railroad running buggies. One weekend a buddy and myself drove up to Cassiare grabbed a coffee and snacks. At the time most of the working people were from other countries. On our way back to Dease Lake there was a big jade nugget removed out of the mountain nearby-at that time this was the largest jade nugget ever found in the world. Really enjoyed Dease Lake residents very nice and friendly, we had employed a few to assist on equipment. Unfortunately the railroad was discontinued.

So I actually skied here in my early teens during the final 1980 season. The runs were nothing special and there was limited snow coverage. The lodge was actually quite nice with that cozy timber frame feeling. You had to hike up 100m to the main lift from the parking lot, so that's clearly why they installed that small Pomalift. As I grew older I spent extensive time hiking, camping and hunting in K-Country and the Bow valley corridor. In the late 80's I ran into some folks at the gas station at Deadmans Flats, which is right on the Trans Canada Highway below Pigeon Mountain. After chating for a bit, the couple mentioned they had bought Pigeon Mt Resort. I became friends with the new owners and there plans were to offer camping, equestrian trail riding and hunting/guide services. They lived in the main lodge as it was still in great shape. The main ski lift was still intact and the elk herds would come out every night to graze on the overgrown ski slopes, right in front of the lodge. Two years later the new owners were bankrupt and sold off the property, never to been seen or heard from again. Pigeon Mt Resort is a perfect example of the worst possible location for a ski resort. Low elevation will never keep snow. Located at the far east end of the Bow Valley corridor which is basically a wind tunnel sucking moisture away and dumping it out onto the prairies. The final nail in the coffin is the south western exposure which has sunlight burning down on the runs during the hottest part of the day. PS. That Trans Alta powerline you see by the ski area runs all the way over to Highway 40, Nakiska and the Kananaskis village. Thanks for the info Skier 72.

On the question about the number of runs, there is likely some regular aerial photography that BC Forestry would have done over the years that covers the area. I suspect if you were to look at these (especially if there are any done in the spring), you'd see what the hill had for skiable terrain.

I work maintenence at a local resort in central alberta called canyon. Last weekend we started talks about aquiring the quad chair still on the mountain as it was "free"(towers and chair). It's estimated to cost over a million cad just to remove it, as well as 1.5 million in movement and restoration. Thought this was interesting and i am happy to give updates if anyones interested in that sort of thing.

Keep me posted! It's certainly a very unique lift (the only quad Mueller ever built). I'd say the haul rope is too far gone to be saved, as is probably the tensioning system. The drive and evacuation engine looked to be in good shape. The chairs were a mixed bag though, some looked in good shape, others weren't.
@the_unicycle_kid9747

@@Skier72 the fact it's a mueller is the main reason we want it, the parts on our other lifts should be standard with many of the quad chair components. Unfortunetly the sheeves are dipped in a special way that isn't used anymore. It's looking to cost similar to putting in a whole new lift. I'm still hopeful on being able to revive a cool peice of Albertan ski history and add to our collection of lifts from defunct resorts.
