Hi Becky! I would love a video comparing different metallic sets like you mentioned! As for using the white in water colour sets, my sister uses it all the time, its her colour in her set most in need of replacement actually!! (and her palette initially came with 2 whites!!) I've only been painting for a bit under a year now, but she's been doing art her whole life essentially. When I was first picking it up I asked her about it, having read most people say you shouldn't use white at all for colour mixing since adding more water makes it lighter and her response was basically "i do what I want 😎" And her stuff always looks amazing so I dont question it further 😅😅
@BeckyTregear Жыл бұрын
"I do what I want" is the best way to enjoy art! 💜 I think my gripe is really when white paints aren't opaque enough for my liking, like this one. 😂
@mostlyvoid.partiallystars Жыл бұрын
I use the white to make pastel colors, and while sometimes you can get a similar hue with just water, the white mixture just honestly behaves better because of a more dense and distributed pigment load I think.
@BeckyTregear Жыл бұрын
That's a good point! Mixing pastel colours is a great way to use the white; I should do this more often.
@lindyashford7744 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! This is what Chinese or zinc white is for. I especially find the ability too dilute pigment into a paler form very useful in botanical art and in misty landscapes as I really am not always a fan of blank areas of paper. It works for some styles of course, but always has a sort of insubstantial feel and I like my botanical work to seem substantial and not impressionistic. I have always known about using white this way because I liked doing arctic landscapes as a child and could never dilute the paint enough otherwise. This is where a transparent white comes into its own….

This actually was quite interesting because this palette looks exactly like the Artecho palette from Amazon. The packaging is exactly the same but I think the quality of the Artecho is a bit better. There are also metallics and normal color palettes, where I have the normal one. Maybe you can take a look and do a comparison between the two of them because the palettes look exactly the same from the outside. Very nice video!

Hi Becky, Hope you are having a great holiday. The good paper certainly makes a big difference with these colours. What a shame the lid does not lay flat. When you first opened it I thought that was a really good mixing space. This set would be good to give a child if you wanted to go,on urban sketching adventures. The paint is good enough so that you, wouldn’t be disappointed but if you lost them or something it wouldn’t be a tragedy.

I use white watercolours. I prefer zink white because it’s gentler than the titanium white :) I realize you are not supposed to use white in watercolour, but it also depends on your style, I think. I do sketches with characters in watercolour, coloured pencils and wax crayons. I often use mixed media in my work. So a bit of white watercolour here and there won’t change that much with me :) When it comes to subjects, I mostly use white watercolour to paint snow ❄ ⛄ 🌨

Hi Becky - welcome back from your vacation! I hope you and your husband had a wonderful time. This would be a cool tin if it laid flat and didn’t have that huge circular indent from the finger ring. Whoever designed the tin probably never used watercolors 🙄🤪. I agree with you about the color choices in the non-metallic set. There just isn’t a good reason to include such a useless white (or white at all) and to include basically 2 blacks really doesn’t make sense. Maybe the metallic set has more mica with not enough pigment which is why the colors all look so similar and disappointing? Thank you for the review.

Hi Becky, Chinese White (also called China white, zinc white, or mixing white) is not a stand alone color. It is used to mix with the other colors on the palette to lighten them without turning chalky. For full opaque coverage you need Titanium White which is often included in some sets is a stand alone pigment used mostly for highlights

I have a watercolour set that look the same from Sostrene Grene. The water colours look good, only the burnt umber and paynes grey are too light in reality for this colours and the ultramarine is more of a phthaloblue. I have the feeling with the colour composition as if a box of 24 has been started with the many yellow and orange tones and with the red tones the person that composed the set have remembered that it is only a set of 18. The set cost 12,40€. After drying, they lighten up a bit more than other watercolours.

@@BeckyTregear I think there's a real need to compare the 'cheaper' paints with artist's quality. Otherwise, how will people using these paints know that, "It isn't me. It's the paint / paper / brush". as we know, many newbies give up on watercolour simply because they get such poor results, never realising that they'll get better result for actually less money in the long term, by buying less colours / brushes / paper of a better grade and learning how to use them. Encouraging colour mixing, demonstrating papers and brushes really does help. I've shocked some students who come to me with bags full of tubes of every possible colour (especially greens) which they've accumulated in their search for 'the right colour', and are given a 12 set with no greens, no violets, no oranges to work with. The same with the price of a 28 x 38cm piece of 100% cotton paper or a decent sketchbook for pencil / coloured pencil work.
