What advantages would there be to have a wind jacket over the puffy? Both are made from 7d calendered nylon. I always wear the wind layer below my puffy to keep body sweat out of my down, kind of like a VBL. Also, its inefficient to have a down vest and then a down jacket when a single down jacket with greater loft (like the Montbell Mirage parka) would be warmer and lighter.

I use the wind jacket over the puffy more to protect it than anything. However; it definitely adds warmth to the down being on the outside also, a little extra wind blocking to keep the trapped air in the down from getting hit by the wind. the sewing holes from the stitches actually leak a decent amount in high winds. As far as the vest goes, it's layered in a way that no down is compressed. Definitely not as efficient as a single layer but it is much better for switching between different rates of activity for sweat reasons.

I'm sweating just looking at ya! Merino shirt, down vest, and wind/rain shell will do it for me.

It's not what you would wear if you are on the move, its for while sitting around at camp in the winter.

@@naturenate7117 Even so! I tend to run hot though, I went for a bike ride in a sweatshirt and shorts today and it was below freezing.

what mid layer do you recommend when active? video mentions you like the plasma for activewear but comments suggest you prefer it for camp.
@naturenate7117
@naturenate7117 Жыл бұрын
It depends on my rate of activity, but usually a thin fleece (alpha 60g/m2 fleece) or a thin base layer. The plasma is great for low rate of activity but gets hot when you are moving fast. I was ski tour last night and the temp was 15F, it was great while I was hanging out at the top but I was sweating after about fifteen minutes of touring. But definitely glad I had the jacket.

Heh, im a little more chonky. I would have to go xl/xxl/xxxl if I used that setup. I am looking at the plasma 1000. Looks like a good third layer.

Montbell is a Japanese company, so their sizing is generally not an American fit... The Plasma 1000 only goes to XL, so just be considerate of that before purchasing. They are amazing jackets though!

Hey there, I'm looking at the sizing and like a little longer length so I'm thinking his rather than hers. I'm 4'10 " and 105lbs. Guys XS sound about right to you ? For the jacket.
@naturenate7117
@naturenate7117 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the late response Kris! I think you hare approaching the situation correctly, a little extra length will make the garment much warmer. I think the mens XS will be a great layer, maybe get the small if you intend on layering underneath it.

Nice gear! Isn't that a bit warm if you are hiking/moving? Do you use this in camp?
@naturenate7117
@naturenate7117 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely warm if you are on the move, best to strip down to the vest and wind shell for that. The whole setup is great for around camp even in winter. I would say it is still limited to 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit when being fully dormant.

only layering vid ive seen that hasnt got a waterproof outer layer.Or is this an advert ?
@naturenate7117
@naturenate7117 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, no advertisement here. But, the reason I don't have a waterproof outer layer in this video is because my ultralight waterproof shell has been discontinued and wouldn't give much value for those looking to buy. Also, I really limit my use of waterproof garments unless it is truly raining, so often, the windshield has more utility for me. Windshells are one of the most versatile layers for ultralight in my opinion, I only break out the rain shell if I really need it.

if it were an advert there are plenty of more expensive shells by them he could sell

@@danielgally6389 So adverts only advertize the more expensive lines ? this is an advert for Montbell. Have you ever seen an advert for hmm say a Ford Fiesta ? I guess you only ever saw adverts for the GT40. daniel gally ? should be daniel gullable
