Montesa 4rt. will it run? trials bike starting nightmare! honda montesa cota 4rt

Suggestions: - change spark plug and verifyspark cable, in video is not clear if the spark is happening - open fuel tank and verify pump filter (if dirty may cause serious problems) - verify fuel pump is running properly as you kick (with open tank and some cabling) - use 100 octane fuel, before totally empty the fuel tank - open 1... then 2 rounds the minimum screw - be sure the lights are off (they absorb energy necessary to the pump) - use a long descending to start the bike in 4th gear - after a kick immediately open the throttle to maximum for 1 second (this reset the ECU) - after some attempts wide open the throttle durin 1-2 kicks, then leave it closed for the next or slightly open As I wrote before in my really long Montesa 4RT experience following those advices it should start in the end... otherwise something is seriously broken. I had a 4rt 250 and started always within 4 kiks. After that I own 4 Montesa (elaborated 290, 300 and stock 260 301) and had only occasionally some problems...I think no more than 10 times in 15 years driving for 300 hours or more each year ! I always user 100 octane gasoline, good ECU mapping, appropriate spark plugs (not too old), appropriate minimum rpm value (too low gives starting problems). Sometimes is useful to slightly open throttle to favourite starting. For sure sparking has to work, once the cable was broken making a false contact... so it works on engine started, but not in starting it !

Hi. You do plenty hours riding then 🙂. The bike has always been good buy for some reason this time does.not want to start. I'm going to get parts to service and I will check fuel pump on tank and do valve clearances ect. I only use good fuel, I won't use the cheap crap in anything I own. Thank you for your input. My idle varies often. I put a hour meter / tach on it. Somedays its 2 or 3 hundred rpm low, others its high. I cut a slot in the plastic, and carry a screwdriver, so I can adjust it without taking the fender off. When I ride in the mountains the idle drops with altitude. The throttle body will get carbon build up and also the hole for the air screw. Hope you get it figured out.

Hi, assuming this bike is stored for many years. I do have 1 of 4RT 250cc as an early edition with frame #1005, currently it is still my main amigo for trials. My suggestion is to remove the ECU but not overhaul, spray CONTACT CLEANER to clean like you clean the normal caburetor. check the throttle cable with over 3mm free play, when you start the engine, DO NOT REV, rotate the engine by press the starter smoothly till you find a rebound compression, then leave the starter to fully rebound, then full kick start, see how it works

Hi thank you for your comment. I will try cleaning the contacts on the ecu and the connectors that go to the throttle body. I have already tried all options with the kick-start. Tried the ecu reset by turning the engine over three times with throttle wide open. Nothing. I will check the throttle cable as mentioned. I will do another video when I resolve the problem 🙈

Its got to be the fuel filter in the thank like a tea bag filter because it ran when you put the petrol in the spark plug hole

Could be the fuel pump as well. It's running now anyway. It's been a mystery. Action jackson started booting it over one night and it went. Not had a problem since lol.

make sure there is free play in the throttle cable. turn the air screw out 1/2 a turn. there crap to start, even when all the stars are aligned

Yeah, I checked the throttle cable. I will check air screw. Its always been o.k to be fair but then all of a sudden does not want to start. Probably wants a good service. Hasn't had one for a while. Check the ba k angle sensor is OK and then reset the ecu keep throttle fully open slow kick 3 times then will be good to go

There is a little black box under the air filter that has a magnet inside and for if the bike flips padt a certain angle it cuts the bike put and will not start again this is alot of people bypass the bank angle sensor on 4rts. This happend to me on mine it would not start and it was the magnet in the bank angle sensor that had stuck so we had to bypass it and it was fine from there on in.

What a nightmare 🙈. You know when you just want to get on something and ride. If you have seen other videos on the channel you will see I have been building bikes and repairing them for customers for some time but its handy to ask around if your not familiar with a simple fix. I was hoping it would be some kind of cut out that I could reset. Probably going to strip the throttle body next. They do pack up. Replaced one on a scooter once. That was a honda. Wouldn't go. Replaced throttle body and off it went. Check timing as well. Although I'm not expecting any problems there to be honest but you never know. It could even be something as simple as spark plug breaking down.

Hi Paul. Hmmm I have been fearing this lol. With it been injection, its usually something needs replacing because its packed up lol. I'm not sure if there is some kind of fuel cut out. I need to speak to people that own one really. Have to see if there is some 4rt groups.

The spark plug is the first thing I checked! Working on bikes over 30 year it comes as second nature.. The throttle is the same as its always been.

It’s not because you see spark outside it’s spark inside with the compression need a spark tester 😊 if don’t start with ether no spark 🧨 😊 Why the timing will change if it was running last time non sense 😮

@xlbullybigkong4485 clean out all fuel filters and fuel lines. Clean all the fuel system. It can take a while to clean a tank out. There could still be bits in it. Clean all components in the throttle body. I think there is an internal fuel pump on these. You could carefully try and run it removed from the bike to see if fuel flows through it. If all fails, replace the injector. Try and clean it before replacing.

I've got 4rt and with mine I very very slowly push kick start down to lose compression then kick slowly down with no throttle, Mine want start if I kick hard or quickly just a even slow kick,worth a try m8 good lucky🤞🤞
