Absolutely a dream pairing. Those last few seconds are mesmerizing. Perfect match of tones and also great stage chemistry. I wish they would be cast together in a full version of the opera!

Monteverdi é IL Maestro rinascimentale che ha portato la usica a nuovi livelli. I suoi maestri/modelli sono stati Palestrina, Frescobaldi ed il grande Gregorio Allegri. La purezza della sua musica, dei suoi madrigali mi ricordano i Sonetti del Petrarca o i dipinti di Botticelli, bellezza e armonie pure, che sono state all`inizio del Rinascimento Italiano, anzi Europeo: a quell`epoca l`Italia come tale on esisteva e le nazioni musicali trainanti erano Italia e Francia (Lully, Charpentier Rameau, leclerc, Couperin e prima di Loro Perotin, etc....)

Gorgeous. There is another video that shows the entire concert. They sing this once in the concert itself, then again as an encore - shown here (but they combine video from both, which is why at the 1:30 mark their scores miraculously appear in their hands, but disappear by about 3:10 when they are back to using the encore footage).

De nuevo en las alturas de Pichincha escucho la voz de Philippe Jaroussky que junto con la de Nuria Rial me arrima a la bonanza. Ambos logran una perfección melódica que me reconcilia con las interpretaciones que se hacen de Monteverdi, a menudo congelado en voces respingadas o de un formalismo patético. Gracias sean dadas por esa ofrenda. Cuando en la friura de una noche andina siento el calor de sus voces, no puedo más que agradecer la existencia de esas ondas que nos acercan a la perfección como si formásemos parte de ella.

I recently attended a night with the Arpeggiata (the enesmble playing here): they are technical monsters like Snarky puppy, outrageous like Dirty loops, and they are free from any scholarly attitude while keeping a convincing historical approach. I consider myself a philological nerd and I was totally baffled. If Cristina Pluhar and her ensemble are touring near your city, don't miss them.

Further. Most versions other than the one I cited are too languid. "Drift off to dream" as Travis Tritt sang. The Tonhalle version is more in keeping with the corpus of the opera. Poppea and Nerone sound as if they were wrapping up business after a good day's work, horrible work to be true, but successfully accomplished none the less.

May be the most beautiful piece of music ever written. Not the best version, though. Soprano has a lovely voice but she's too kittenish for Poppea. Countertenor is wimpy. I still think the best rendition I've heard is on an LP of Incoronazione (sp?) di Poppea i bought in 1957 done by an opera company in Zurich. It's worn out now and can't be replaced.

The gold-standard of this piece is always the first one you heard that captured your heart. I’m certain back in the day the Zurich performance was stunning but in the transcendent light of Nuria Rial your scratchy ‘57 LP isn’t worth a damn.
