Great documentary! Thanks for sharing it. It's very valuable, because many of the friends and associates interviewed here are dead now. Having read a biography of Monty, it was wonderful to see the people mentioned in the book interviewed here.

i have this on vhs, but its great to watch again online! thanks! Yes, it is wonderful that he was able to get interviews with those who knew Monty best. I believe of those interviewed in this documentary only Jane Fonda, Patricia Bosworth, and Jack Larson are still with us. It was an amazing era in our nation's history and his contributions to film and american culture are indelible.

I have a feeling this video was made before the recognition that smoking contributes greatly to heart disease. Talking about "he sure loved his steaks", when someone interviewed said he was a chain smoker... But I'm sure the steaks didn't help lol

Smokers don't usually die at 45 from heart attacks. He did a lot of drugs and drank a lot. Or he might have had a heart defect, how do we know?

i can't help but chuckle when i read an interview or see a doc,...or whatever and there is any confusion while drugs are on the scene. it doesn't get any clearer. Monty and marilyn were insomniacs who always talked about HOW to fall asleep! it's the fucking pot calling the kettle black, lol. here's one way : STOP TAKING AMPHETAMINES AS THOUGH THEY'RE TIC TACS. idk about anyone else's thoughts are but that seems to be one way to fall asleep. Monty was an amazing individual for quite a while but, eventually his demons got to him and unfortunately, got the best of him. In this sense, Montgomery Clift is, excuse me, -WAS- no different than the next fella, Joe regular , who has to make his way through life and over come the struggles. It's weakness that gives in or resigns the fight to drink and drugs rather than the amazing strength of spirit and character it takes to endure the trials of life, head on. i think this has been defined as becoming an adult but hey, what do i know. I am a fan, don't get me wrong. i just feel That Monty got off to a strong start in life and finished dead last. it's a cowardly thing to give in as he and many others have and on that note, I'm not impressed

Monty seemed to gravitate towards people who would enable his self destruction. I don't get a good vibe off the people who publicly talk about their relationship with him. You never hear from Nancy Walker or Marlon Brando et al who were most likely in Monty's life positively. Even his family is questionable with the nephew who never knew him making money off his life and the recording of private phone calls by the brother. Monty deserved better. RIP lovely Monty.

Monty Cliff was the most brilliant person in making films back in the day. He was so full of life but when he had that accident, and who knows how he lost control of the car, was he drunk at Liz's party? No one ever said. I don't believe his parents though strict (and most parents back then were like strict) had anything to do with his behavior after the accident. He was sort of narcissistic in how he viewed himself and with a face that had to be fixed, he lost his sense of balance. Drinking, drugs, whatever it took for him to function. Finally, the demons of his mind (and it could have been the accident that wrecked something in his brain) caught up with him and he killed himself. By now he'd be 99 years old. I doubt if he would have lived that long if he never had the accident.
