Yep Mr. Clift suffered immensely. He couldn't have an open gay relationship. He had chronic pain after the accident in 1956. You don't "cruise" to pick up young men 'surreptitiously,' neither do you 'party' alone. Hollywood wanted to keep his image as a heterosexual heart throb for the general public, a more profitable market than the "gay" niche so they put out fake stories of his gem ale "love interests". When homosexuals in the entertainment industry complain of having had to "hide" they complain of being deprived of what they typically yearn for: the freedom to be exhibitionists, to ostentatiously display themselves to shock the heterosexuals they despise and call "breeders."
