I'm probably one of the few who enjoys simplicity of sports broadcast of 70s and 80s. Always enjoyed play by play of Keith "WHOA NELLY" Jackson.

Thanks for posting! I love this era of ABC baseball. Keith Jackson was underrated as a baseball broadcaster. His cadence is operatic, yet sparse: he doesn't blather on making unnecessary chatter. And Drysdale was great as an analyst or on play-by-play.

Keith Jackson, Don Drysdale and Howard Cosell made a great announcing tandem. Drysdale was taken wayy too soon.

The Expos were so good in this era! Falling short to eventual champs Pitt in '79. These Phillies, who they Thumped on this day, in 1980. And of course the Fernando Valenzuela Dodgers in 1981.

Don Drysdale was found dead in a hotel room in Montreal, Canada in 1993 when he was part of the Dodger broadcast team (including Vin Scully). Found among his belongings was an audiotape of the acceptance speech of Robert Kennedy the night he won the California primary when he was assassinated in June 1968. In the tape, Kennedy congratulated Drysdale as he pitched his 6th straight shutout that same night.

Drysdale had pitched for the AAA Montreal Royals in the 1950's before being called up to the Dodgers. He also started his broadcasting career with the Expos. So he had a lot of association with Montreal, including his sad ending.

Very interesting that this game was recorded off the ABC station in Burlington, VT. This station (which two years later switched back to its original call sign of WVNY) has a large viewership in Montreal just to the north, along with all the other TV stations in the Champlain Valley. So, there were likely a lot of Expo fans who may have been watching this game.

Keith Jackson and Don Drysdale on their own were fantastic calling ball games. Together they were impossible to turn the channel on.

Saw many games at the Vet in the 70’s and 80’s. Very exciting time. The old Vet was classic.

Bowa's error in the first would be called a hit nowadays. You don't want to hurt anyone feelings by charging them with an error.

The way things were going for Phils that day, they got off easy with only a paper airplane thrown from 700 level. The backstop screen at the Vet then was hard wire, not nylon netting. Same at Shea, that's why hard fouls made the noise. All the 'fill' at the end is to let the noozies in NY and DC figure out how long the east coast version of WNT will run.
