Here's Seaver's comments after the game: “It's embarrassing and frustrating, extremely frustrating,” said Seaver. “I've never had such a bad spell as this, especially when I'm feeling O.K. as a player. Here I am with a contending club, they need what I can give them, and I'm not doing it. I haven't the faintest idea what's wrong. It's very humbling experience.” The loss to the Phillies put his record at 0-3 with a 6.52 ERA. However, he rebounded and got his first win in his next start, and finished the rest of the season by going 16-11 with a 2.34 ERA after this game. He also made the All-Star team and pitched a no-hitter on June 16, the only no-hitter of his career.

I remember every last one of these players. I listened to a lot of these games on the radio back then.

The voice of Don Drysdale-one of the best Dodger Pitchers and Hall of Faner! Our local hero from Fresno did not have a good day! I had the fortune to see Tom pitch his last game at the Oakland Coliseum. I drove my 1967 Pontiac from Fresno to Oakland a a 20 year old. This was in September of 1985. I saw our Tom Seaver win as a White Sox. He won the game 3-0 vs the A's

Kind of disappointing that the only run the Reds scored in this game is missing...Johnny Bench hit a home run in the bottom of the 7th, and that entire half inning isn't here. Bench was my favorite player as a kid, and I was looking forward to seeing him hit that home run these 46+ years later. I didn't see this game live on ABC that night, as the Reds always blacked out home games, and we got the alternate game (Baltimore at Boston) here in Cincinnati that night.

Ditto. Exactly the same here. I was crushed when I saw the Reds' 7th wasn't included. Johnny is my all time baseball idol.

It's a shame MLB can't just let us fans watch the games we want. I think in the long run it would work to bring baseball back as the national past time.

Both of the starting pitchers would be pitching for the White Sox in 1986 although not at the same time. George Foster would be there too.

And then the following year Steve Carlton would pick himself up a World Series Ring at Minnesota.

Later that year Tom Seaver would find himself in Boston and in the Red Sox dugout during the 1986 World Series.

I remember Mike Lum from his times with the Atlanta Braves. 1973 he hit 16 hr & 82 rbi's. 1973 was the year Hank Aaron, Darrell Evans & Davey Johnson each hit 40 or more hr for the Braves.

Tom Terrific with Cincy. Thank you, again, M. Donald Grant and Dick Young for running the best player in NYM history out of town. May you both continue to rot in a very hot place.

I started following baseball as a kid in '78, so for a time I only knew Seaver as a Red, and Tony Perez as an Expo.

Why is Seaver throwing fastball after fastball? Where is the curve? Where is the slider?
@mikeyoung98108 күн бұрын
It was early in the year and a cold night. It looked like he was down to his fastball as the only pitch he could get over.

Or the fact that he won his 300th game in a White Sox Uniform at Yankee Stadium It wasnt bad enough June 15 1977 but after they got him back for the 1983 Season they leave him unprotected in the Free agent Compensation draft That was all Davey Johnson he never wanted Seaver because he was giving his spot in the rotation to Gooden which worked out so you can call it collateral damage It still sickens me the way he was treated by that Mets front office
@robertpusateri234512 күн бұрын
Seaver said in that interview that he was losing constration. Hence years later suffer dimemtia. May have started then.😢

I'm real sure that his difficulty in concentrating in this game gave him dementia many, many years later. By the way, he pitched his no-hitter later the same season.
@mikeyoung98108 күн бұрын
He went on to have a good year and played 8? more years and eventually won 311 games. I don't think it was dementia. I was just a cold night early in the season.
