Montreal's First Church (1655)

One of the oldest still functioning churches in North America, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel in Old Montreal was established in 1655 and rebuilt in 1773 after a fire destroyed the original chapel.

The oldest church in North America is in Mexico from the 1530s and also the Spanish colony of St Augustine in Florida which dates from around 1565 before the arrival of the English and French..

Wow I didn't know that church. People can be weird sometimes, they covered all the gem in that church thinking it was too old and it was time to refresh this place. Another good job as always 👍

You forgot to mention the hearts the sailors gave to the Virgin Mary that are located on either side of the altar. That is a special detail besides the boats. As well, we say 'trompe l'oeil' in English too.

First functioning church was built in Tadoussac, and it's still there. 'La chapelle de Ste. Anne' - Saint Anne's Chapel was built by a Jesuit who went down to Québec City to borrow some 300 'livres' to build the church. It was granted on the condition that a mass to honor Ste. Anne be said once a year in perpetuity. The chapel is still there, but they deconsecrated it in order to build a post-modern abortion just a few meters up the hill from the chapel. However, the chapel is still there - a tourist attraction of course - and the local priest does say mass on the feast of Ste. Anne every year. I believe it's sometime in early July or August...
