Living in Montreal is very different from other towns; you have European vibes with a mix of American vibes, the food is fabulous, and you wish to eat real mid-eastern food, fine you've many places to pick from. You want to eat real French food, there again many places to pick from, oh wait, I want Thai food for lunch, again you've got it. You love European flair music wise of course you've got it. If you want to dance in an Argentine place go downtown, right next to the best

I live in Phoenix. Phoenix (proper and metro area) has almost exactly the same population as Montreal (proper and metro area), yet Phoenix doesn't have anything that Montreal has. Yes, Phoenix is newer, so it would naturally lack some of the charm that comes with age - but geez, we have almost nothing here but flimsy, beige, stucco, sugar-cube homes and freeways for hundreds of square miles. An almost endless sea of mediocrity with pockets of golf-course neighborhoods for those who can afford it. I feel robbed by our politicians and business community.

You have to understand that Montreal(Ville-Marie) is the oldest city in North America(Historians will tell you that it is Quebec City). Europeans landed here in 1534 and thought it was China and thought the First Nations people were Chinese, this is why today a suburb of Montreal is named "Lachine". Almost every produce, bank and manufacturing in North America from it's origins from beer(Molson's, Labatt's), tobacco(Imperial Tobacco), sugar(Redpath), mills to pens(Waterman's) and even American surnames like Gagnon, Leblanc, Cormier etc... can be traced back to this city.
@timward3116

@@etow8034 Ha-ha. I am actually somewhat aware of Montreal's importance in the world and its many contributions. I spent almost three years up there in Longueuil, and went to Concordia University (Loyola) for two full years. I was there when Levesque and the old P.Q. first came to power. My studies included two semesters of Canadian history and a year of "Native Peoples of Canada" (back then, they weren't called "Indigenous People"). Some of the best teachers I ever had were there. And I used to have fun conversations in the campus library with my Quebecois friend, Robert, who was a fiery separatist and a helluva nice guy. Interestingly, although Montreal is much older, that fact only accounts for the beautiful older buildings - and Phoenix, which never had great buildings like Montreal, nonetheless destroyed almost all of its better historical specimans. During the last five decades, Montreal and Phoenix have both grown very large together. Montreal did it right. Phoenix did it all wrong, focusing on urban sprawl, flimsy brown-cube homes, freeways, and parking lots. And I say that as a Phoenician with decades of watching things getting worse. Regardless of history, though, Phoenix is a place that puts zero emphasis on public art. When it comes to public art and beautiful architecture, neither the politicians nor the developers believe in it... so we don't have any.

Those anglo Americans tend to think Montreal feels « European » because they tend to associate Europe to France. Because of the french language, Québec province might feel « Europeans » because of that. Actually for us french people, it feels very north American, and even very english (the city has actually more english-derived architecture than french). In fact, there is not such a thing as « european feel ». Every European country has a different a completly different feel, foods, architecture, language and culture. Paris is nothing like London, but both are part of Europe. The US and english Canada have cultural roots moslty in England, which it totally different as France, but still as European... there is no reason that hearing speaking french should make it « more European » that hearing speaking English, Spanish, German, Greek, Portuguese, Polish or Russian... all these languages are European

Montreal, as great as it is, is a shell of what it used to be. Quebec politics of the last half-century have taken a serious toll on what was once a truly world class metropolis. It's been all downhill after Expo '67. In fact, Toronto owes most of its economic and population growth to the fact that the Quebec gvt set out to alienate the Anglo and minority communities of the city to the point where many of them packed up and moved to T.O. from Montreal. Montreal, in my opinion is the most Canadian city there is, but don't say that to a nationalist Francophone or they'll rip your head off.
