It was a song that Motown also did not want to initially produce as it did not fit the mold, too political. It’s regarded as one of the first if not the first thinking black man’s songs.
@GiftedCJohnson1

With this album, Marvin shifted the purpose, focus and paradigm of Motown and music consciousness with this compilation. Barry didn’t want to jeopardize the Motown machine or Sound of Young America, which was to give the illusion of their not being impact by the era. Marvin broke the mold with this and forever changed the concept of consciousness in songwriting. Rest well Marvin , Rest Well.

Marvin was so often trapped between being high as a kite, a state of different levels of depression, utter confusion and inner rambling chaos that when he had a normal moment of sanity and peace, he would write, create and produce songs based upon his journey and how he saw things through those experiences. His demons were relentless and he fought them for a long time. May God grant him eternal peace and rest his soul.

What a beautiful human being, there will never be another like Marvin. indeed Marvin sang about the issues and struggles of just not only black folk but the world as a whole. I saw Marvin in concert a long time ago and I think I was the only white boy there, seeing him live was one of the greatest experiences in my life. Marvin was touched, he had to be in order for him to write and sing what he did. I miss you my brother!

Dirty Diamonds I wrote sumthin similar, wit regardz 2 Ozzy Osbourne, bcause I wuz probably 1 of da only brothaz, checking-out Black Sabbath & Pantera @ da L.A. 4um n 2000. Peephole like 2 talk crap about Ozzy, bcause he had substance abuse issuez, BUTT DUH same peephole talkin crap, have no problem abuSIN Mother Earth, & ngaging n a fake-azz game, which can ultimately culminate, n human beingz, killin each otha, hatin each otha, & actin like mindless automatonz - waitin 2 receive orderz from their master, who may azz well b Satan himself - & they will carry-out those orderz, 2 perfection. I came 2 da conclusion, dat I xcused both Marvin & Ozzy, bcause it must b terrifying & dpresSINg 2 undastand such hopeless thangz, about our human xistance. I have found wayz 2 deal wit da knowledge, dat r probably not good 4 me 2, so I can stop thinking about da tragedy, of DUH human CONditioning. SMH

From Paris.

True, but T Pain has and had a really great voice before everyone thought he was hidin' behind the auto tune effect when it was merely a simple effect, which eventually started a trend. So, your comment is just a waste of a comment. Go check T Pain's more recent videos, not that I'm a fan of his, but... it's the same ol' comment. Please.

@Sean R It starts with self. Breaking the chains of hate/hurt/anger etc. I've heard & witnessed those not having experienced it in their personal life. As the saying goes, "hurt people hurt people." "Love" really is "the greatest of all these." (1 Corinthians 13:13) It takes healing of self for change to start. Sadly, there are those not wanting or willing 2 take the steps. All the best.

#SeanR Good morning, I listened again closely to "Marvin Gaye's" song, he was a spiritual person and he was speaking about his individual thoughts and how he felt. Also, the need for people to come together. Wish he was here to get his thoughts accurately, but then again he left his music and listening to this live recording you hear his thoughts on matters. Yes, self introspection is needed. Also, admitting and then correcting self when I see errors. This is a humbling thing and it doesn't make a person small. It's a growth in character. Pride of self is good, but too much can lead to disaster. Look at the results. (Ecclesiastes 8:9) Take care and stay safe during these "trying" & "changing times." {2Tim. 3:1} The Bibles prophecies are truly being seen and fulfilled.

@@autumnsmom1117 Very well spoken. Nothing (good or bad) ever happens that doesn't start on the individual level. A child of God our Father lost so young. I truly miss you so much Marvin. A childhood of abuse we both shared. You were sharing the word of God in 1980 in Montreal, Quebec. I will always love you Marvin and miss you. Drugs everyone says you used.......who are they to judge you or anyone. All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.
