I remember hearing her for the first time at a recital in the late 1970s at Trinity University in San Antonio. She was such a superb artist, very gracious, and also very funny. My friend from Spain and I went backstage and before I knew it the two of them were singing songs from Catalonia and she was howling with laughter. A night to remember! RIP, Montserrat, and thank you for your generosity as an artist.

Oh, yes! I have a DVD of this performance. It’s a treasure. Caballe must have loved singing outside in the wind, because I also have a DVD of her historic Orange performance of “Norma.” Gives you shivers. This Don Carlo is such a treat: Aragall is awesome throughout, but magnificent in the big duet with Renato Bruson. Caballe is my favorite soprano, and Jaume Aragall is my all-time favorite tenor. And then there is Simon Estes, the pride of the American heartland. We love him here in Iowa. Everyone here has a story of his kindness and his generosity. Several generations of children grew up to tell their own children of getting to perform in one of the youth concerts he organized. Other people tell stories of meeting operatic superstars backstage in exotic locales. I met Simon Estes in the parking lot of my local grocery. He was staring at my vanity license plates that read, “OPERA.” Ushered me into the store as though I were Caballe, casually admonishing people not to tell his wife he’d been seen with another woman. Just a sweetheart of a personality.

This audio is not from Verona or Orange! It is from the Met. April 1972. It’s a very well known performance. From Rudolf Bing’s last season. There is a musical train wreck at the very end. The chorus is late on its “è la voce di Carlo” entrance which makes Siepi very late on his “mio padre” high F#. Madame Caballé saves the day by coming in on her “o ciel” right on the correct beat and right with the orchestra. She starts the high B piano and gradually crescendos it over almost 20 seconds. This is Caballé with Corelli (Bing’s Baby) and Siepi (who sang this role for Bing’s first opening night in 1950 when Christoff was denied a visa) and not Caballé with Aragall and Estes.

FAKE NEWS! Caballé nevers sang that note in Orange, where the video of this performance was recorded. The owner of this channel has just spliced in the audio from another performance (recorded at the Met, in 1972, with Franco Corelli & Cesare Siepi) into the Orange video. A video does not exist of any performance in which Caballé held the note for that long. I believe it only happened twice. Edit: After reacting to the video with my comment above, immediately after seeing it, I read the comments, and (thankfully) many had already detected the deceit.
