Shortly after this movie came out I was in the Army stationed in Germany. I took leave and went to England for vacation. At customs I got to chatting with the customs agent and could tell that he had a sense of humor similar to my own warped one.. When he asked me why I came to England I replied "I'm just looking for Castle Anthrax". He paused for a moment, then broke out into a grin and said "We all are mate".

The Arse Trumpets Terry Gilliam used in his animations were inspired by actual medieval marginalia, which were the often rude and/or amusing drawings and sketches made in the margins of illustrated religious manuscripts as they were being transcribed by medieval monks hundreds of years ago. Angels and cherubs blowing trumpets with their arses seemed to be a popular theme that can be found on numerous different ancient manuscripts from the period.

Back when this was first released, films often had a real intermission, usually for 10 or 15 minutes, when drinks and ice cream could be bought or you could go for a pee break. Some people did get up and go during the mock intermission in this film, thinking it was real, and probably missed 5 or 10 mins of the film. "How do you know he's a king then?" "Coz he hasn't got shit all over him like the rest of us" is the most succinct comment on aristocracy and peasantry ever written! That and the whole "we're an Anarcho-Syndicalist Commune" piece!

I think they were like a bunch of live-role players who had eaten too many mushrooms and ventured too far into their imagined roles so the police caught them in the end 😂 There were no end credits because those in charge of writing subtitles and text were sacked before the movie started 🤪 We often say that things were absurd a few hundred years ago but in just a few hundred years from now they will be looking back at today and saying we were silly and absurd, people are fighting over "bad words" instead of bad intentions, so many totally missing the point of what is important in life and fighting their way to their graves 🙃 Don't worry about the red hair btw, according to the sumerian scriptures red hair was the signature of "Human v2.0", the better and more improved humans 🙂

Well imagine seeing this first run in the theater! It was out of this world. Funny and the ending was well... The theater was in silence or for a few moments and then someone over there started to laugh and then someone across the room started to laugh and then pretty soon all of us started to laugh because we realized that was the end of the movie and it was just insane! It was something that we experienced that can never be experienced again. 33:52

Hi Brad & Lucy, just as in the Tv Series there is no regular ending, in this case it`s a literal cop out. From what I`ve heard they ran out of money & so ended it. TBF, the witch did say it`s a fair cop, suggesting she was a witch !! Glad you had so much fun reacting to it. :)

Hilarious reaction from you both. First saw this when it came out in 1975 on a double bill with Blazing Saddles.....those really were the days. Every line quotable every scene gut bustlingly funny. One reason for the abrupt ending is that in their TV sketches they always ended the same way....they hated scenes that had a nice neat ending...true anarchists. 🤣

No doubt some commenters will tell you that the coconut-clopping servants were only there because they ran out of budget and couldn't afford horses, but it's an urban myth. It was just a typically silly, surreal Python idea that was decided at the early scriptwriting stage, which is why coconut- and/or swallow-related jokes crop up throughout the film. In addition, Concord the talking "horse" wouldn't have worked unless it was played by an actor, few (if any) of the Pythons were competent horsemen, and it was probably more expensive to pay all those human actors/extras than to have real horses anyway.
@0okamino
@0okamino Жыл бұрын
I always assumed it was true, considering all the moose and llamas they had to work into the budget before they even got past the opening. Since you mention it, the only one of the Pythons I recall seeing riding a horse around that time is John Cleese as Dennis Moore (dum da dum dum dee).
