"Did you write the symphony [pause] IN the shed?" The timing of that line alone is just sublime - this has to be one of my all-time favourite comedy sketches.

How and why would anybody come up with this ‘two sheds’ idea for a skit?. It’s crazy, funny, the delivery timing and the characters are spot on. This is the brilliance of Monty Python and its’ nutty members.

@@J.R.in_WV One of the guys I used to work with had a nickname "Two Dogs". I was wondering if it was based on this skit. "I've got a dog." "Well I've got two dogs!" He was a bit fond of himself and didn't mind a bit of one-upmanship.

Terry Jones delivers a masterclass in comic acting here. Obviously Idle is great as well, but he's got all the loaded lines and its harder to excel as the straight man. Does anything perfectly sum up the bloody-minded ignorance and typical sanctimonious-ness of journalists better than this sketch?

When you've seen it dozens of times, the opening seconds with the two of them in typical "pre-interview" chat become one of the highlights - which would sadly have been missed by most viewers when it was first aired on TV. The genius of Python - making it "perfect" with details which few viewers were likely to "get" at the time.

I love the little absurdities in this. All Python sketches contain such tidbits, but this one dials it up to 11. The fact that Terry Jones has been given a nickname, more or less against his will, based on such a banal thing, and the fact that he doesn't even own two sheds, but rather is considering buying a second one, and that's enough for such a nickname to stick. Just brilliant

The wonderful thing is that there really was a composer called Arthur Jackson! His dates are 1851-1881. Unfortunately, he didn't write a symphony, in a shed or anywhere else. He did write a piano concerto and a violin concerto, however. He was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music.

The magic of this great sketch is the absurdity of a famous classical composer being called "2 sheds" as a result of a repeat purchase of a shed prior to the interview,and the gravity of importance attached to it by the host.Like Kevin Eldons recent sex pistols sketch,it is the absurdity of a group of Amish folk behaving like punk rockers that makes it special.These are my two best ever sketches.

This skit and then one from Nick Park's, "Creature Comforts," (the people who do Wallace and Gromit) made me realize how important sheds are to the British. Growing up, we had a small tin building where we kept the push mower and threw crap on some shelves, but that would be laughed at in England. (The Creature Comforts skit was where a husband and wife - animated as some large mice/rats - are talking about putting in a shed, and the wife says it's so he can read his pornography in it.)

So did he write his music in a shed?
@carminum
@carminum Жыл бұрын
@@u.v.s.5583 This is what happened. During one of our lessons at conservatory we came to talk about the Arthur Jackson sketch. We laughed at the whole idea of a composer going out to his shed to do his composing. One day he decided, as he sometimes did, to teach from home, so he picked me up from the station and drove us to his house. When turning up the drive my eye was caught by two small adjacent buildings near the house. Recognising a 'Toad Elevating Moment' I shouted: You actually HAVE two sheds! He explained that he used the smaller shed for composing chamber music and the other one for writing large stage works. In reality the sheds were in use by his wife and him as garages for their cars. Of course it comes as no surprise that since then I frequently called him "Twosheds". But it gets even funnier. His house was in the country, a beautiful cottage like establishment surrounded by a forrest. The house and forrest were one property. Which probably makes David the only composer ever to have had two sheds and his own forrest. And for something completely surrealist now: imagine David and me taking a break from a lesson and have a little walk through the forrest... passing the two sheds. Leaves me with mentioning that Arthur Jackson is one of my favorite composers.

Argh! You're absolutely right. And I'm supposed to be an English teacher! I must have been tired when I wrote it. Incidentally, I have one shed. Three years ago I had a shed, but NOT THE SAME ONE. The current one was assembled on the site of the old one. So during my life so far I have had two sheds, but not at the same time.

Great sketch! So I wonder if this was actually the inspiration for John Prescott's "Two Jags" nickname.

I have a friend who bought himself a big tent. Almost immediatly after he put it up, he started having issues with it. Leaking, ropes ripping, etc. So he contacted support and wanted his money back. After many e-mails back and forth, they sent him, against his wishes, another tent! As bad as the first one. So, he became David 'Two-Tents' Harrier, much to my wife's and my amusement...😂. Now, a while later, he is David 'No Tents'.... as he burned both of them in a fit of rage...🤭
