Little fun fact: some of the actors actualy puked for real. Not because of the scene itself, but because the vegetable soup they used as fake vomit started to smell realy foul under the hot lamps of the studio (another reason the inventor of LED should be winning a nobel or such), so when you see the extras puking in the scene, some of those were REALLY feeling ill.

I think this highlights the difference between American and European humour. The slower pace and awkward silences actually elevate the scenes and make it funnier because of the awkwardness, adding to the absurdity. This is why quite often American remakes of British comedy falls flat (The Office being an exception of course.) like The Invetweeners as typical British Comedy doesn’t always translate well to American comedy and vice versa.

It's definitely important to remember British comedic timing is different to Americans. A lot of our jokes can be left to stand and 'breathe/stew' for a good long while, and to us that often makes it funnier. Probably different for a more energetic American audience though.

Except the Americans to whom it isn't. America just has enough of a majority to try to homogenize the cultural norms, which creates a quite different kind of faux individualism to compare with a smaller country where people's actually individual tastes willl sum up to a flavor distinct to that group. It just takes on average more time for a smaller audience to audibly groan or boo because some times the groaner doesn't happen to be in there, so on average the experience is that British taste has more patience to it. But really it is just that with big enough country and freedom of speech, everybody just must agree to like the sound of booing more than to wait to see where this is going. That's why American humor is quick edits regardless of what kind fo cultural tone the editing cut off.

It is strange that he slipped the punchline but I'm betting it's because of the sponsors. That last punchline ties the whole thing together but it's also and intense gore moment. I'd say that the rest of the bit is meant to be torturous to some degree. They want you to vote this character as a worthless glutton harming everyone around him. He spends and consumes simply because he can and never asks why or even takes pleasure in it. When the waiter finished the glutton off we want to cheer the death of a man who clearly wasn't interested in his life or how he affected those around him. The first time I saw this scene I was disgusted all the way until the end where my mouth just hung open in shock before finally being able to laugh.

Every existential crisis and epiphany that I've had; about work, love, getting older, society had already been turned into movie long before I was even a potential concept. In my early 20's I smoked something, a lot..., with the direct intent of discovering the meaning of life. The cosmic forces in my head did not disappoint and I discovered life as far as I could tell was meaningless. Some people would be very disappointed by this kind of revelation but I found it third eye opening. It says a lot without saying much at all, which represents the fact that there are many aspects of life that while mentioned often, tend to ultimately be ignored in favor of the mundane. It's surreal at times with no explanation, representing how life can be unpredictable without apparent cause. The ending with the meaning of life given is an answer so basic and delivered nonchalantly, showing that after going through such a weird journey to find out the meaning life, it's something so obvious and unsurprising that we often feel silly for not thinking of it before, which is not an uncommon experience. In this way the movie is brilliant in regards to its topic and a masterpiece in its own right, even if it's not the best comedy in general.

Add all that with the other bits and you get one really interesting and hysterical movie, to me anyway.

To Doug's point about the pacing issue: I think the reason for it being too slow is both the fact of them having a bigger budget and wanting to show off more scenery, effects, and extras; as well as them being so use to sketches being done in such quick succession that for the sake of getting most scenes in one long take, they were forced to slow down their usually quick witted material because of how expensive it would be to reshoot. Or maybe it was on purpose. They're comedy geniuses, I won't presume to understand their methods. And now, for something completely different.

100% underrated. I find it extremely funny as a whole for illustrating the meaningful meaninglessnes of life. Too drawn out at times? Yes. Trollish? Absolutely. Just like life itself. Only saw it once, and had the false idea that the conclusion at the end was "try not to be am asshole". It is, but in more words. And if you really take the time to study the world's religions and philosophies, that's pretty much it, anticlimactic as it is. This film will also have an eternal place in my heart fot the platoon of naked chicks chasing that guy. Way before I even heard of the movie I said I would like to die getting beaten to death with boobs. When I saw that bit it was like a religious experience.

21:00 Funny you mention it, in the biography "Monty Python Speaks!" one of the contributors believes the film should have been re edited so that the entire Mr Creosote epilogue/aftermath should have been removed from the end of Mr Creosote exploding (thus segueing appropriately into Death) and put right at the end of the film and subtitled the ACTUAL Meaning of Life - first, as a callback to the most talked about part of the film (where they're STILL cleaning up after the horror); secondly, as you say, it's a perfectly ended sketch and the best way to end the film after a patchy final Death section; and thirdly, it gives the impression that Eric Idle's character is the same one who sings during the opening credits, so it ends up forming a decent bookend.

Like you said during the Death part, that it feels like their TV show, but on big screen. Whole movie felt like that. When I was a kid, was in Summer musicals in my hometown, and one of those was Oliver. Every Sperm Is Sacred is literally mocking Consider Yourself from Oliver. I sang Every Sperm Is Sacred at karaoke several years ago, was a lot of fun. The hand of God quote is a great one, and definitely probably quoted the most.

For the sketches going nowhere, that kind of always was the trademark of Monty Python. This movie has more in common with Monty Python's Flying Circus than the previous movies. Of course, the movies didn't really go anywhere either. Just look at Holy Grail, with its silly ending where nothing is resolved. Partly filmed in my city *Bradford,* just like a lot of *Monty Python's Flying Circus.* *Every Sperm Is Sacred* is partly filmed at *East Riddlesden Hall* in *Keighley, Bradford* in the bit with the nuns, and is partly filmed at *Cartwright Hall, Lister Park* in *Manningham, Bradford* in the bit with the nurses and priests. I used to walk through *Lister Park* and past *Cartwright Hall* every day when I was in 6th form at school. *Cartwright Hall* has also been used in productions like *Look Up and Laugh* (1935), *Room at the Top* (1958), *Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen* (2009), *DCI Banks* (2010-2016), *Utopia* (2013-2014), *Residue* (2015), *Lies We Tell* (2017), *Gold* (2018) and *The Duke* (2020). *East Riddlesden Hall* has also been used a few times too, in productions like *Wuthering Heights* (1992), *Sharpe's Justice* (1997), *Lost in Austen* (2008), *Wuthering Heights* (2009), *Gunpowder* (2017), and *Anne Boleyn* (2021-present).

One of my favourites- but it’s fascinating regarding the point of fast cutting. I think I’m more used to slower humour than the current pace, so didn’t quite notice- but you’re absolutely right. For me, it's actually my favorite Monty Python movie and one of my all time cherished comedies. It's biting satire to the core ... nothing is sacred (literally). My favorite joke in the film is the catholic mother birthing her like 100th child in the kitchen; also the marketing scetch about "people not wearing enough hats" is great; and also want to point out the sketch about the disinterest of Englishmen in sex in comparison to their enthusiasm about sports.

Ah, Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life… The film where a fat man inside a fancy restaurant proceeds to explode after eating too much food, covering the nearby patrons in digested vomity goodness before the camera cuts back to the guy, revealing his burst open chest in its full inside glory, complete with a broken janky rib cage and a heart that is still beating… and is now emitting hard, heavy breathing sounds as the man now stares nonchalantly/emotionless into nothingness… Yes, I was a child when I saw that… No, I have not forgotten it, despite my mind’s wishes…

I think this is the perfect finale for Monty python. Instead of doing a continuous story, they basically made flying circus the movie… but better. They truly went back to their roots and did it in a beautiful way. And the ending is so stupid but it’s inspiringly stupid. Like you said, they are literally giving the most mundane definition of life but in my eyes it’s a great way to end off. They were so insane with everything they did, that it would make sense for them to give an insane meaning of life. But it’s probably one of the most normal dialogues they ever did, even when he’s talking about pictures of penises. It’s their mocking of the film industry at the time when a film usually had to be grotesque and violent to be considered a hit. The Mr. Cresote sketch may be commentary on that as well, but I’m not sure. Then when it ends with the tv floating away, I see that as the most depressing thing they ever did. In my opinion, that image states that even though they are done, they can’t really escape. They’re just stuck in the TV set as their python personas forever. And really think about it. The actual pythons can’t get away from it. We’ve seen them do great in other movies, but there are always reunions, books, documentaries, tours of various members doing solo songs, when they’re on late night all the hosts want to talk about is python, etc. Gilliam was the only one who has had wild success, only because he wasn’t really one of the main 6. He was the animator who made enough cameo appearances in the sketches to be seen as one of them. So I think at that point, they knew they were not going to get far from it, and they are trapped in the tv forever to just be that.

With rugby scene really hit me hard when I watch this because it was so true. Obviously we weren't out against older children but it always seemed to be the shortest and weakest kids on one team and the huge, tall and stronger kids on the other and if course, I was in the weaker team because I'm a short ass. And it really was half the time the bigger kids attacking the smaller ones for absolutely no reason even if you didn't have the ball. What's worse is that we never did rugby or outside sports during the spring or summer but always in the freezing cold or rain (unless the field was completely swamped) And the school wonders why I stopped attending PE.
