It's the musical that horrified millions, well, thousands...maybe. This box office bomb will forever live in infamy but Nostalgia Critic and Cinema Snob ask is that necessarily a bad thing?

Cats is a 2019 musical fantasy film based on the 1981 Tony Award-winning stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which in turn was based on the poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939) by T. S. Eliot. The film is directed by Tom Hooper, in his second feature musical following Les Misérables (2012), from a screenplay by Lee Hall and Hooper. The film features an ensemble cast, including James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Francesca Hayward.

@@ARCtheCartoonMaster oh totally! Legitimately competent, smart, well acted or written good media is almost always better than a it's so bad it's good media. But to get to either of those, you gotta take risks and have passion. The room was is such a masterful train wreck because Tommy Wiseasu, even though he didn't have clue how to actually make a good movie, had real passion for the craft. Instead of a group of board member looking at the chart and thinking, people like hammy acting, poor writing, and scenes that make no sense, so let's put that in a movie! It just lacks an air of genuineness IMO
@RB01.10
@RB01.10 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I'd rather have something be memorably bad than forgettable bad. For example, I might be in the minority, but I found Superman Returns to be even worse than Superman 4. Why? Because at least 4 tried to do something different such as nuclear war, and Nuclear man, even though he was terrible. Superman Returns took no risks and just rehashed the 1978 film (the land plot, and using Lex as the main villain again). What we got was a bloated unexciting 2.5 hour snooze fest.

2:00 I suddenly have this idea for Cats, remade as a cyberpunk story where the Gelicals are a cult of humans that have body modded themselves to look like cats, all the dance and song numbers are diegetic from audio/visual implants that everyone can link, and Old Deuteronomy is the cult leader who decides who gets the “privilege” and “honor” of having their consciousness subsumed into the Heaviside layer. Which in this version is a sentient network of billions of people’s minds that controls the world.

While negative criticism can be fun to watch, I love that NC always finds something positive to say, and this one in particular hit home hard: it's better to be memorable than profitable. @@AlinaAniretake Sideways' review focuses soley on the music failing Tarzan. While NC does talk about that too, he reviews the entire film as a whole. NC's talk of the music takes up less time than sideways too, since SW has a whole 20 minutes to talk about one aspect of the movie and NC takes 26 to review the entire film. Everyone shares similar critisicisms. Saying Nostalgia Critic stole Sideways' entire review is like saying he stole from Lindsay Ellis' brutal takedown of Phantom of the Opera(2004). I mean, I know NC's vid came out before but it's the same idea. They have similar criticisms towards one film. Trying to claim he stole it does nothing but highlight that you'll go out of your way to find any reason to hate this randomass KZbinr, and have to make up stuff to do so. -A fan of _both_ channels

She had recorded on tape the PBS showing of Cats some years before and it was our favorite movie! It is still a favorite of mine. The old tape is long gone, but the new movie captured the magic and awe that inspired us, and me in particular, all those years ago. Was it a cinematic masterpiece? No. But it reawakened the joy that made me love musicals in the first place. It maybe just nostalgia painting the movie with a rose tinted lens, but Cats the Movie is work of art that I love.

@@fredmanto It makes more sense when you realize the writer wrote these for his toddler daughter who loved cats. Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats is a collection of poems that T. S. Eliot wrote about cats for his daughter. When his daughter was young, she would call cats "Jellicle Cats" and dogs "Pollicle Dogs", as toddler would mispronounce certain things or have difficulty with pronouncing words in general resulting in such baby talk. So all cats that he wrote about were her Jellicle cats and all dogs were her Pollicle dogs. In a letter to an associate, Eliot explained an idea he had for the last poem of his book (the poem was never written. The idea only existed in this letter, and was taken by Andrew Lloyd Webber and added to the musical), where all the cats and dogs would ride balloons up up up, to the Heaviside Layer.

I'll be honest, something that bothered me to no end is how they treated Grizabella's return to the group. In the musical, what brought her back in was the newcomer taking her hand, something the other cats refused to do because she had been banished. By touching her, it means she's accepted back in. Any cat could have done it, but most were afraid of straying from the "accepted conduct" (pun not intended). In the movie, she just sings a song.

No, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas is a fever dream. Cats (2019) is a butt ugly mess.

@@jeremyusreevu237 yeah… But this movie to me is also a fever dream in its own way. It’s incredibly strange, have you watched it?

@@999lazerman that’s completely fair lol there’s a few moments of strangeness in the beginning, if it stayed that way through the rest of the movie maybe it would be worth a watch in a so bad it’s good way. But it’s not.
