First time I saw Periphery back in 09, Chris was singing for them. Dude is a beast, no question. So... so good. People ask, "How do you get vocals to sound that good, and in tune?" It's simple, "LEARN TO SING!" haha

Honestly it takes a great vocalist like chris... you can do all the tuning and editing in the world, but it won’t make a mediocre vocalist into a great one. Just like most things in music, the most important part is the player and the performance! The rest is just polishing something that’s already great.

No disrespect to John but I agree. Those rhythms were huge before the mix, but sounded a bit scratchy and scooped after. Also, the doubled vocals should have been de-essed, because you can clearly hear them flamming during the clean sections. I thought the drums could have been better (kick and snare sounded a bit fake and a lot of the fidelity within the fills was lost because the drums were too quiet), but drum sounds are very subjective so maybe I'm just wrong. The bass sounded absolutely massive though.

@@sammyloehnis3373 I tend to agree. Not enough snap in the kick and the rhythm guitars kinda lost their bite I think. Also I think the master could have been louder to match the modern metal “standard”. It’s really cool to hear these stems though, lots of nuance I hadn’t noticed in the final release.

The drum stems sound way too quantized/compressed, and not nearly human-sounding enough, especially the cymbals. They almost sound like they came from Superior Drummer or Slate Drums. Not a good sign, if you ask me. Am I being too critical, or is there some truth to this?

Yup def being too critical and hearing things that aren’t there. This drummer is a BEAST. He is just that good. Some drummers are so tight they sound edited - Anup Sastry, Alex Rudinger and Luke Holland are a few examples. There are some bands that rely on editing to sound good but Monuments are DEFINITELY not one of them. They are the real deal.
