Monza. One of my favourite race tracks of all time. And of course my favourite track in Italy as well as my favourite place and thing about Italy. :)

The first purpose-built motor racing circuit in the world was Brooklands, located in Weybridge, Surrey, England. It was opened on June 17, 1907. Monza didn't open until 1922.

And my beloved Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909. Based in many ways on Brooklands. America's Cathedral of Speed.

Adelaide came first. Brooklands gets the credit because it wasn’t built for horses whereas Adelaide was built for cars AND horses, but it was still the first circuit specifically built for motor racing. It opened for horse racing in the 1890s but the motor racing track was completed in 1905 less than 2 years before Brooklands opened. Getting faulty information from James May is excruciatingly rare, but yeah. Adelaide/Aspendale came first.

Presenter got that 1966 race wrong. Ferrari won that one, but not by Lorenzo Bandini. His only victory came on the 1964 Austian GP at Zeltweg. The 1966 Italian GP was won by Ludovico Scarfiotti and to this day, he is the last Italian driver to win at his home GP.

Good to see some big banger Holden V8 Commodore tin tops at Monza in 86. The number 5 was driven by Australia's most famous ever touring car racer Peter Brock!

The people that created the magic that was Monza would be shocked and embarrassed at what has happened to that track. As any driver of that era would have said "you cant have racing and be safe or its a traffic jam." They knew the risks and wanted to drive anyway. It made them safer better drivers because death is bad. When did Europe decide castration is preferable to risk?

Targa Florio- Proof you didn’t have to purpose build to have a temple of everything, including speed. Existed before the others, and unlike those, you had to survive the passes before being rewarded with buonfornello at the end of each lap.

Some excellent vintage footage I haven't seen. Basic factual errors per comments annoying, for sure. The Monza incident omitted here, and from other discussions of the track I've read, is Materassi's horrid crash during the 1928 Italian GP/GP of Europe. His car ripped into the grandstand audience on the main straight--he and at least 22 spectators were killed. Von Trips's terrible 1961 accident is famous, while the 1928 disaster seems to be largely unknown, outside of devoted motor sport fans. Not sure what my point is. These days, much seems pointless...

You guys do know that some cameras take a pic in mirror image right? They could be going the other way. Take a pic of you sitting in your car and see which way it looks... Some American cars look straight up right hand drive...🤷🏿‍♂️

That Thumbnail. The Birthplace of Speed? Monza? Ummm... NOPE. Monza didn't come in to existence until 1922. Brooklands opened in 1907, a full 15 YEARS before Monza. If anywhere can claim to be the "Birthplace of Speed", it's Brooklands, the first purpose built racing venue ON THE PLANET. Sheesh. With an error like that in the thumbnail, I have to question the quality of research that has gone into the rest of the documentary...

Getting faulty information from James May is excruciatingly rare, but yeah. Adelaide/Aspendale came first and one could still argue that Monza was the first circuit built specifically to push cars closer to their theoretical top speeds thanks to the banked corners. It’s a cute old-timey KZbin doc, try not to get too worked up.
