This was their very first hit song. I am giddy---I should explain. I always loved, love this song. The chord changes, the chorus sound, the piano...honestly, I can't explain why I loved it s much as I do. I would ask people "what was the Moody Blues first hit song?" Nobody ever could say "Go Now" and to this day I am still smitten with this song after all these years. It just speaks to me, so thanks for covering this quirky, pretty, passionate song. I would want the guy singing this to be my boyfriend. Just sayin'...

Cover of a song first recorded by American soul singer Bessie Banks earlier that year, though it quickly became associated with the early Moody Blues and hit the Top ten in the USA. Guitarist Denny Laine handled the lead vocals. The more exotic sounding Hayward and Lodge had yet to join the band. Laine would become a major player in McCartney's Wings in the '70s.

This was Denny's staple number he did when touring with McCartney and in these years later, when Denny's been the guest, this is the song they'll do. This song always makes me dissect "What makes a Pop Song?" because these seems pretty darned perfect. Do you take a Bluesy Number - a bluesy lyric, melancholic, with some charge-out 'hooks' not in instruments but in voices. Although that descending piano series is memorable, too.

Go Now reached no.1 in the UK. They were an R&B group to begin with and were originally called the M&B Five--which was named after a pub in Birmingham which they regularly played and which was owned by Mitchells and Butler brewery. The Moody Blues had little success with singles after "Go Now!" in the mid-1960s, which led to Laine's departure from the band, later being replaced by Justin Hayward. Bassist Clint Warwick had already departed the band at this time. Rodney Clark had replaced him for a while before they recruited John Lodge. With the new lineup, The Moody Blues continued to perform "Go Now!" for a short time, up until they began writing their own material. Hayward sang the song during his first year with the band, and Ray Thomas attempted to sing it a couple of times himself.[10] Laine continued to perform the song in concert during his years in Wings. On June 21-23, 1976, at The Forum in Inglewood, CA, Laine performed "Go Now!" with the band Wings, accompanying himself on piano, along with Paul McCartney on bass and vocals, Linda McCartney on vocals, Jimmy McCulloch on lead guitar, and Joe English on drums. This version of "Go Now" appears on the Wings Over America live album. He also sang the song at the Birmingham Heart Beat Charity Concert 1986 raising money for the local children's hospital.

It's strange to think that a 57 year old record in1964 would have been from 1907! No one in 1964 would have wanted to listen to such music in 1964 (except historical musicologists perhaps), let alone younger people from later generations. It just shows how increasingly rapid technical progress was and how little musical tastes have really changed in 60 years compared when living in the 1950s to 1970s era.

Days of Future Passed (the album with "Nights in White Satin" on it) is where the more proggy sound came in; the entire thing is very well worth a listen. Same for A Question of Balance, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour and On the Threshold of a Dream. ("The Balance," A Question of Balance's finale, is another one of those 'everyone should hear this at least once' songs.) For Something Completely Different: "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band," aka 'please stop assuming we know the secrets of the universe, we really don't.' '80s Moody Blues has a very different sound, but Long Distance Voyager still has some gems on it. "Meanwhile" and "Talking Out of Turn" are both gorgeous, and I have a soft spot for "Veteran Cosmic Rocker" that I figure is Terry Pratchett's fault (look, if that song doesn't sum up Soul Music I don't know what does).

So, when Denny Laine was in the band Liverpool was Beatles, Rolling Stones type music. London was more blues like and further north was The Animals type bands. Denny Left the band before they played Nights in With Satin. After the British Wave had cooled down bands started playing Nights in White Satin type music. That took off due to a concert in Asbury Park in 1968. Denny founded Wings with Paul McCartney. As for Go Now. That is one of my favorite songs. The music has never been better than the 60s and 70s. It was first recorded by Bessie Banks. She does it very well.

Different lead singer, Denny Laine, The original version was by Bessie Banks. Go and have a listen. I think this version is better in that it is more dramatic in keeping with the subject matter. It is being deeply in love with a person but not being able to have them as part of your life. I remember this popping off the radio in 1964 in the new year. It reached number one in the charts and was some 8 weeks in the top ten. The rightous Brothers were number 3 when this song was number one. It's got a sort of Phil Spectorish 'Wall of Sound' feel to it. Given the quality of radios in those days that style is effective in getting over the general din of life as it hurtles by.

I don't really count the first album, though I do like this track. But this may as well have been a different band. Technically The Moody Blues, but in terms of music - not really.
