Moog Sound Studio Generative Patches: DFAM + Subharmonicon

Welcome to the soundset for the semi-modular system, Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Subharmonicon. DS Generative is a collection of 25 patches. This genre of sound design is very popular inside modular culture, and Moog Sound Studio suggests a good set of features to enter this club.
The bank covers a wide range of tones: warm, deep, bright, metallic, soft, expressive, dreamy, dark, evolving, detuned, inharmonic, noisy, distorted and others.

Controlled chaos and randomness, probability, non-repetitiveness, tempo break, pattern uniqueness, short and long sounds alternation, unexpected changes, silence and density, harmonic and fx-like tones, freaky splashes during a sequence - all these things are included in the soundset.
Generative timbre may be a good addition to (or a lead part of) ambient or techno tracks, jams and performances. You may also record fragments into your DAW or sampler, slice it to one-shots or make loops - you’ll get a unique material for further processing.
The main point of the soundset is the high level of interconnection. In this patchbook, the timbres of the synths are soldered and can’t exist separately:
🔸 they modulate each other with Envelopes
🔸 a sequence from one synth may change parameters on the other one
🔸 triggers interaction, clock/rhythm, run/stop modulations break predictable patterns
🔸 audio signals from VCOs may be used as modulation sources to create harmonies/intervals or crazy experimental inharmonic tones.
The soundset is presented in PDF format. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn a lot about the synths and discover their true depth.
To recreate these patches, you need up to 13 patch cords.
There are audio examples of all patches inside the folder with the soundset. Audio examples for a patch are presented in three variants: DFAM only, Subharmonicon only, and both together.

Great to see you keep creating for this set! (I already own all your previous ones) An idea perhaps, is to do presets for two of the same and/or mix with the Behringer: two dfam, two subH, two mother or dfam + edge, etc.

Great work again, thanks. I really appreciate these semi modular patch sets much more than a standard set for a non modular synth. The act of working through these is educational and breaks me out of my own patching patterns.

thank you for the feedback. semi-modulars are my favorite format for the presets. I wish there were more popular semi-modulars like moogs (or by moog). but currently, their number is way lower than regular synths.

Hey man. Wondering before I buy a subharmonicon, can I use its VCOs to tune the VCOs of the DFAM? Thinking of using them live and wondering if there’s a way to keep the dfam sounding good with them rather than feeling out the tune painstakingly. Thanks

If you send subh osc output to dfam osc input this will cause FM modulation. Dfam doesn't have 1oct/v input

Yes... but from the CV controlling Osc1 or 2, not directly from Osc 1 or 2 . from the SubH paperwork. "SEQ 1 OUTPUT The control signal available via this output reflects the value of the control voltage created by the current step of Sequencer 1 and respects the settings of both the QUANTIZE button and the SEQ OCT button. CV OUTPUT: -5V to +5V" so.. Patch the SEQ 1, or SEQ 2 out on the SUBH into the VCO 1 CV on the DFAM, which have volt per octave control ... but... "This input provides 1V/Octave control over the Pitch of It is summed with the VCO 1 FREQUENCY knob, the VCO 1 EG AMOUNT knob, and the individual Sequencer PITCH 1-8 knobs (if the SEQ PITCH MOD switch is set to VCO 1&2)." @AntonAnru, 1v/oct is hiding on the DFAM.. it isn't like these patch bays are straight forward or anything.. from like p500 in one of the paperwork companions they released with it. .. " NOTE: For accurate 1V/Octave control over the Pitch of Oscillator 1, set the VCO 1 FREQUENCY and VCO 1 EG AMOUNT knobs to their middle positions, and ensure that the SEQ PITCH MOD switch is set to OFF or VCO 2." FM synthesis is possible, but that would be patching the Direct output (VCO 1 or 2 output) to the Dfam. this is a nice effect, but not what you are looking for.

@@manweilermusic thanks for the knowledge man. Gave up on buying a subharmonicon immediately. But about to try tuning up my DFAM using my Hapax. Any tips on that are welcome. Assuming I just had to tune knobs to C and go from there, but not as controlled as I’d like

@@milesholt3655 The SubH is a delight. in terms of the DFAM It is a synth designed for more extreme sounds. While It can do pitched melodic (A Quantizer helps) , and I think really shines in the hocketing melodic with percussion/ FM sounds. You will need to use the patch bay to get the full range of sounds, even if only self patching the DFAM Depending on your expertise patching I recommend doing a deep dive and picking one parameter/ control element, etc. at a time from pages like this and really study those patches to where you get where you can predict and plan ahead what that parameter is doing.
