I will never understand KZbin. How come this video does not have thousands of more views and your channel so many more subscribers!? This is hands down the most interesting and enjoyable sub25 demo/review I have seen, and that is usually the loopop review for me. I especially loved the “real life” use approach and that instead of talking, you actually played for 16 minutes straight (I’m a big fan of text while actually hearing the synth vs talking about how many oscillators it has while the synth just sits there sadly in silence). Thank you for great content. I’m actually looking to get one for some jams on my own channel, and this is making it hard to resist😅 subbed bro, keep it up!

This is because the "viewer bubble" is oriented mostly on synth nerds. If this track would be more "pure music" oriented, the difference will be visible.

@@davidvochocjr1005 actually, I’m mainly a guitar player and except for this vid, all my vids with more than 10k views are about guitars, amps and guitar pedals. Thus, the bubble is probably even more oriented on guitar nerds, some of which may be irritated by my more recent interest in synths :-)

@@StatsGod IIRC the sine wave lead sound was not made with the oscillators, but rather with self-oscillating filter at 100% keyboard tracking and high resonance setting; with only a tiny bit of oscillator sound going into the filter to keep it better in tune

I have to admit though that for decent HiHats, Snares and Claps, you will need an external high pass or band pass filter. The Subsequent 25 can do great kicks and toms on its own. But for the Hats and Clap I had to add high pass filtering in the Cubase Groove Agent plugin, since the Subsequent’s filter can only do low pass.

@TheGuacamoleXplosion4 жыл бұрын
only checked the Minitaur briefly at a store. Not sure if there are big sonic differences. Advantages of the Sub25 would include that it is self-contained ... you get 25 keys, and you can save 16 patches. Whereas with the Minitaur, you would need a Laptop to recall patches (of course not an issue if you only use one basic sound and/or completely rely on live tweaking), and an extra keyboad. Also, Sub25 will look great on stage :-)

I love this synth and I'm a bass player. I have a Novation Bass Station but I really want one of these. So much more powerful
@Frozirra2 жыл бұрын
It’s really not much more powerful dude. 1 lfo and envelopes for filter and amp? I think the bass station has at least another LFO. I have one of these and it’s frustrating to be unable to do any real modulation routing. (And they’re fixed to the mod wheel.) Shit the bass station 2 even has filter drive. Tbh it’s just expensive bc of the brand legacy. It sounds good, but I think bs2 sounds just as good (I actually prefer the BS2 filter, it’s good enough to be on their flagship the summit)
@TheGuacamoleXplosion2 жыл бұрын
@@Frozirra kinda disagree ... as stated in the vid, I own both the Bass Station II (since 2014, so I really know it well) and the Subsequent 25. Also, the Novation Peak, which is mostly half a Summit (minus keyboard and minus some extra filter functionality). Yep, BS2 has a way better feature set than the Sub25 at less than half the price: 2nd LFO, freely tune-able subosc, aftertouch, sequencer, arpeggiator, much more presets, the great AFX mode turning in basically into a monophonic drum machine. Also, the filter offers some extra flexibility: 2 different types, can be set to HP/BP/LP, at 12 and 24 dB/Oct, while the Sub25 can only to LP, but at 6, 12, 18 and 24 dB. BUT ... to my ears, the Moog VCOs are MUCH more powerful than the BS2 DCOs, and so is the filter. Not sure if the Peak/Summit filters are really exactly the same like one of the two filter types in the BS2 ... but even the Peak filters cannot touch the Moog filter. They distort to early when using resonance, and are not that nice sounding in the higher frequencies. About filter drive: Subsequent 25 offers TWO options to overdrive the filter. First, with the mixer: Mixer pots set to noon, sound will stay clean. If you push them up, you will overdrive the filter. Also, you can replicate the old Mini Moog trick of feeding back the output into the mixer internally, without extra cables (Shift mode+Noise knob). Then, you have the post-filter multidrive. So, even more drive options than on the BS2. I completely agree however that modulation routing and a 2nd LFO are dearly missed; such as arpeggiator/sequencer and aftertouch. Well, if you want those, you need to get the Subsequent 37.

you may wanna check the IK UNO Synth Pro ... Fatar keybed w/ 37 full size keys and aftertouch, arpeggiator and (polyphonic!) sequencer, good built-in digital mod, delay and reverb FX, other than that fully analog with 3 VCOs sounding almost as nice as the Moog ones, 3-voice paraphony, 2 LFOs, 2 Envelopes (weakest part compared to the Moog IMHO) and 2 filters which can be used in series or parallel (but not in stereo). One is a 2/4-pole SSI LP filter with self-oscillation, the second an OTA filter that can do 2 pole HP and LP; much more flexibility than on the Moog, though the Moog filter does sound better IMO. The UNO Pro costs less than the Subsequent 25 and has way more features; unfortunately, way less knobs, and doesn’t look as pretty. But suits on a crammed desk much better. @TheGuacamoleXplosion4 жыл бұрын
Hi, only played the OB6 for some minutes in a music store yet ... great synth! Sub 25 can definitely do deep bass and great leads; not sure if it can do better leads than the OB6. Matriarch and Grandmother sound quite different from the Subsequent series Moogs IMHO; not so much because of the number of osciallators. But rather, those oscillators sound really different ... Matriarch and GM are closer to the old school 1960s Moog sound. Sub 25/37 have a more modern sound, not so raw in the midrange.

thx ... the 25 is a rather simple synth, so I never cared too much about presets, you get everywhere fast on your own. I think loading from the sub37 is not possible, since the 37 has more sonic options (2nd LFO, mod matrix etc.) that are not available on the 25.

hey random question I noticed that your using a babyface interface, I have one myself. I was wondering if you knew how to output the analog signal bypassing the computer. So basically hearing the dry signal directly from the interface without using the DAW; I am having some sound issues :P
@TheGuacamoleXplosion4 жыл бұрын
What DAW are you using? Normally, you should get zero latency monitoring by switching off monitoring in your DAW, and pulling up the faders for the hardware inputs (top row) on the RME Total Mix software instead, routed to the monitoring destination of your choice. Take some time to learn the Total Mix software, it’s a very powerful routing and mixing tool, you can even get decent reverb on your zero latency monitoring signal, great for tracking vocals. BTW not sure if that RME zero latency monitoring is really in the analog domain, or if it’s only extremely fast digital technology.

great video, how did you add arpeggiater
@TheGuacamoleXplosion4 жыл бұрын
in the intro track, the arpeggiator is a MIDI plugin in my DAW. The Subsequent 25 keyboard sends MIDI notes to Cubase; there, the inserted MIDI arpeggiator plugin “Arpache SX” converts the steady notes into an arpeggio, and sends the MIDI notes for that arpeggio back to the Subsequent 25, which then plays the corresponding notes. Later in the vid, I use the Korg Electribe as sequencer triggering the Subsequent 25.

I have one, it’s nice and sturdy, but you’re really paying for the brand. The bass station 2 is just as good imho. And the Waldorf pulse 2 has so many more features it’s insane, and so can the dreadbox Typhon
@TheGuacamoleXplosion2 жыл бұрын
Yep, you definitely pay for the brand. Also, buying from an employee-owned company ... which seems like a good idea IMO. Re: Novation Bass Station 2 - see my reply above (to your reply to Daniel Roos). Just to add one thing: Last year I produced a track with my Novation Peak on bass; and I thought: The Peak can really do a fat, earth shaking bass, this is just as good as the Moog! Then, I connected the Moog and played the same MIDI track through it ... and noticed: No, Peak may be 90% there, but the Subsequent 25 still delivers the stronger, livelier bass. Re: Dreadbox Typhon and Waldorf Pulse 2 - those are definitely fantastic analog monosynths at a great price point, including digital FX. I didn’t play either in person yet, only know them from YT demos. Pulsar seems to continue the Waldorf tradition of sounding a bit cold/sterile/80s style, but extremely versatile. I guess the Typhon could rather replace the Moog sonically, for me. Both have the downside that there’s way less knobs/faders to control stuff than the Sub25: Moog has 31, Typhon has 14, Pulse has 8. I would add the IK Multimedia UNO Synth Pro (which I do own) to this group: 3 voice paraphonic with nice sounding VCOs and filters, a lot of flexibility, 8 knobs and great sound for less money than the Subsequent 25.
