you mentioned at around 20:13 that there was a firmware update which updated the sub phatty with duo mode. Really? Can´t find any details about that.

I noticed that as well. Amos previously confirmed that it is possible so Moog should do the honourable thing and provide a firmware update for existing Sub Phatty owners.

@@chrisbusch2442 Just got this message from a Moog rep called Anthony (nice guy to be fair) following a question I sent about the firmware update to make the Sub Phatty duo-phonic: ''Hey Gordon, I do not see why we wouldn't do this. It might take some time due to firmware engineers focusing on other updates. But I will pass the message along and see if we can get the ball rolling soon. I'm sorry I don't have a solid answer for you today, but as a Sub Phatty owner myself, I'll be pushing for this update!! Please let me know if there's anything else I can help with. I'll keep you posted on any updates. -Anthony H.'' I'm encouraging others to make the same request. Sounds promising.

Would've loved to see more preset storage as an upgrade to the sub phatty, maybe even a bank selector by the mod pitch wheels or an arpeggiator? Wouid that have put the price point out of the phatty line's range maybe?

Nope. Instead of giving existing Sub Phatty owners a firmware update for 2 voices they instead re-packaged it with the increased headroom of the Subsequent 37 and are selling it at an increased price. A product extension to increase profits and not much more.

Gordon Bennett The Sub25 is cheaper than the Sub Phatty was upon release and is only $50 more than the previous price. Seems like an exaggerated statement to me.

@@HotStrange When I say they are selling the Subsequent 25 at an increased price I meant compared to prices of the Sub Phatty now. I suspect that sales of the Sub had tailed off so a business decision was made to extend it's life cycle by re-packaging it with the increased headroom of the Subsequent 37 and making it duo-phonic (which they could have done with a firmware update for the Sub). From a business point of view for Moog it makes sense as they get to increase profits compared to the Sub and didn't have to spend money on resource and development considering they are offering nothing new. However, it's a bit of a kick in the teeth for existing Sub Phatty owners like myself when they could make the Sub duo-phonic as already alluded to by Amos Gaines at Moog.

Gordon Bennett No synth manufacturer is going to price their gear to compete with the used market, and the $599 price was clearly to clear out stock before this release. I do agree about the firmware update, though. Here’s hoping they will listen and come through with it. Especially considering how many Sub Phatty owners are out there. I wish I would’ve bought one when they went on sale because I’ve wanted one for years. With that said, I’m excited for this one, just because of that. I love that it can get a bit grittier, and the duo mode/increased headroom is nice.

@@HotStrange Used market? Oh, are they not selling the Sub Phatty in the US anymore now? I'm in the UK and you can still buy the Sub new in lots of retailers. The current price is £660 brand new so I'm guessing these are the last stock of the item new. When I made my comment about price this is what I was referring to just to clarify. I actually bought my Sub Phatty brand new for £580 back in September last year using a discount code. Great little synth. It can go gritty so I'm not so worried about missing the extra headroom but it would be nice if it was also duo-phonic. I actually prefer the look of the Sub Phatty though compared to the Subsequent 25. But then I also prefer the look of the new Pro 3 standard version (which I also plan on buying) over the SE version.

OMG, why even bother storing patches if there are only 16 slots? I never understand why synth manufacturers would limit something like that. How much more difficult would it be to allow 64, or even 256 patches or more?

Lots of synths don’t even have patch saving. It’s a simple interface, you can dial in sounds quickly.

16 slots, without screen is perfect. Wish more digital synths would go more “analog” with preset selection. I’m also a fan of the original bass station preset selection. To me, makes it fell like more of an instrument

They are both very different. The biggest is presets. No presets allows for more live manipulation of patches but you have to remember how you got to that if you want to do it again later. Presets allows for recall of patches but its harder to modify live cuz you got to remember where the sets were last for the present, which is important for live performance. I have the Sub 37 (the 25's big bro) and I'm still thinking about getting a Matriarch (the GM's big sis) because its a different experience. So what do you want it for?

I prefer the sound of this/Sub Phatty. It’s a tough choice because the Grandmother is amazing, but I would personally choose this. It also has an extra EG, both are loopable, 4 different filters, duo mode, distortion, and patch saving. If you’re into Eurorack at all, the GM would make a great centerpiece, though. It also has a sequencer.
