Moon bears finally meet after years living side by side

Jeanne and Pindari were among 101 moon bears that Animals Asia moved from an ex-bile farm to our sanctuary in 2021.
Although they'd lived in separate cages at the farm, they were only a few yards apart.
We can't be sure but we like to think they'd already formed a bond while on the farm because, as soon as they arrived at our sanctuary and met each other, they were immediately besotted.
Can you imagine the joy they felt when finally meeting after all those years? 🥰

This made me cry with sadness and joy. To be in sight of each other in a bile farm suffering loneliness and torture for years, not being able to reach out and touch is just so immensely sad and heart wrenching.. To see them together at the sanctuary so happy, now inseparable choosing love and company over sweet treats shows how powerful their beautiful friendship really is. I dont think that people with empathy can ever understand the awful suffering that is instilled on animals - they all deserve respect and love, it is their right. I tear up every time I see a bear rescue and bless everyone concerned in rehabilitating them.

Our team are experts at integrating bears and monitoring the group dynamics, so we have had thankfully few big clashes of personality. If a bear doesn't work in a particular group we reassess and try and find them a friendship group better suited to them.

In the wild do moon bears form strong friendships? Are they more social than other species of bear?

Hi, great question. No, actually in the wild bears are solitary animals. At sanctuary they form strong friendships and bonds, we're not sure why but it really helps their rehabilitation and quality of life.

Great question Amanda! No we haven't as it would mean drawing a sample from them and we only go near the bears when absolutely necessary. We like to think that regardless of whether they're related they get on superbly well anyway!🥰

Yes it's sadly a reality of life at sanctuary that this can and does happen. We try to integrate the bears with others we feel they will get on with.
