A DARING mother and son duo have hand-raised 14 bears in their back garden. In the heart of Bearadise Ranch, Florida, Monica Welde and her son, Johnny IV, spend their days rolling around with bears that weigh up to 1,000lbs. The Welde family have looked after grizzly bears, black bears and polar bears for the last 91 years - using their license to provide for those in need of a home. But the family tradition came under threat last year when Monica’s husband, Johnny III, died of a heart attack just after he turned 60. But with the help of her son, a devastated Monica has put her loss to one side so she can concentrate on continuing the family legacy and caring for their beloved pet bears.

That's understandable as there's roadside zoos that don't take good care of their animals . but mpst zookeepers really seem to care about the animals and zoos have rescue and rehab programs and breeding programs . I know the Austin zoo rescues all their animals and they keep animals that wouldn't be able to survive in the wild. So yes I'd really look into what the zoo is about and call them and ask questions but by supporting zoos they can expand the animals enclosers and do more for conservation . really when a animals needs are met they can live happily in captivity.

@mirfangu5946 The wild means living half their lifespan or less, periods of starvation, being helpless as their babies die, being hunted, etc. Lots of suffering. And that's fine, but the animals cared for well in captivity have many upsides to make up for their possible limited space (granted, the primary motivation for animals to roam wide spaces is to find food and mates, both unnecessary in captivity) and that should ameliorate the concern especially if the animal looks happy. Animals are wired to be able to bond with humans and able to truly enjoy being pets, it is fundamental to their original design, which is why even fish, even sharks, can be seen bonding with humans and loving affection when nothing in their intraspecies behavior is comparable.

James Franko - "Of course Any [all] wild animals are better raised by humans."? I couldn’t disagree more. Wild animals deserve to be raised in their natural habitats, they need to be. The ONLY exceptions are those that were either born in captivity, or orphaned, LIKE THESE WERE. Yes, we are taking animal resources, which is why we ALL need to work to protect their habitats. There are still wild animals, wild areas, bears, heck ANY animal shouldn’t be taken out of its natural habitat. THIS video shows a family raising wild bears that were either born in captivity or orphaned and raised. There is a big difference.

The point she made about why the bears are better off with them than in the wild are spot on! so many people bash on facilities like this and zoos because "wild animals don't belong there" as if every animal able to keep itself safe in its constant changing environment.

Your husband seemed to be such an amazing guy to know... He's with the great white bears in the sky. I betcha that in his work as God's angel he gets to ride a bear, instead of having to use them common wings. Amazing people, you are, your soul and compassion shines through your eyes -and the bears', too.
