A correction about Iwata: he did create a new compression algorithm for Gold and Silver, but the intended aim was not to save storage space. Gold and Silver could accommodate Kanto simply from the fact that the new cartridges were larger (twice the size!), and instead Iwata's new compression algorithm worked *faster*, allowing Pokemon to render on-screen much quicker than in RBY. I remember trying to track this down one day, since it's such a common piece of Pokemon folklore, and the story seems to have arisen from an interview where Iwata was credited and thanked for his work on a compression algorithm, with no further details given. It's likely that readers made the assumption that space-efficiency was the aim of this algorithm, and thus that Iwata must have been solving a storage space issue for Game Freak, with the myth continuing to grow from there.

Ironically a lot of people think Nintendo will be the Pokémon franchise's saviour when they are the ones who intentional or not pushed for such tight development cycle in the first place. At the end of the day it doesn't matter if people are blaming the "correct" head; all heads are hearing the complaints and I assume internally they are all doing the best they can to address them even if publicly it doesn't seem like it and practically it is going to be many years before we see the effects of their course correction.

Sheesh. This goes to show how fragile IP Laws are worldwide, especially in regard to what Nintendo has “Golden Eggs”. Microsoft has Minecraft, Sony has…erm…something, but Nintendo has to manage some of gaming’s most beloved IP on top of a juggernaut like Pokemon. I still believe the Pokemon Company does share some fault here, but ultimately I can understand why Nintendo has to be this defensive. These IP laws just don’t cut it anymore and being lax like what Sega does with Sonic has consequences. In regards of the games, perhaps that’s why the expansion building for Nintendo in general is being built for more leg room for their IPs. Who knows, but the takeaway from this is managing Pokemon is a Herculean effort.

While Nintendo definitely has the most control over Pokemon compared to the other two (and has some level of direct control over Creatures, with strong push over gamefreak but not direct control of any sort), I think the video also does minimize to a certain extent the autonomy of TPCi itself. TPCi might need to bow to Nintendo (as well as gamefreak and creatures to some extent as well) when direct conflict occurs, it does have some ability to make decisions without purely being bound to Nintendo policy. As an example, Pokemon was making mobile games a decent amount of time before Nintendo had it's own mobile game program with stuff like Mario Run or Fire Emblem Heroes. If it was just apps like Pokedex 3D it'd be one thing, but some of these were full fledged mobile game. And given the head at the time specifically talked in interviews multiple times about not having a ton of faith in Nintendo's console business and the switch's potential, I feel like the initiative was largely led by TPCi itself. Nintendo definitely could've vetoed it of course, but it likely wasn't a policy push coming from them. I think in general Nintendo probably doesn't do much directly to micromanage the Pokemon Company except when they have specific things they want to happen, or things they specifically don't want to happen are going on. I think when it comes to legal management, it's not a direct result of Nintendo setting the policy, they have their own lawyers who don't need to get the ok from Nintendo at all times for literally everything. That said, if their policy caused issues for Nintendo, Nintendo would likely intervene directly, and the desire to avoid that could even cause the legal team to be overzealous on issues where Nintendo might be more lax themselves
@zjzr08Ай бұрын
I do agree that I notice some distance with how TPC does its licensing over how Nintendo does itself...if Nintendo has significant power over TPC I have to assume the Pokemon mobile games would have some part from the Nintendo Mobile division but they usually dont; the most Nintendo involvement that I know is the use of Nintendo accounts for personal details and save data.

I guess my only question is that if Nintendo has so much power and control in so many nitty gritty teeny ways, then how can they simultaneously be the one most likely calling for GameFreak’s ridiculous release schedule while they have a habit of having games completed and sitting on them until “the time is right.” How is it there are so many instances of not milking franchises in the same way. There are definitely instances where this did happen, especially in the earlier days what with the rushed development of stuff like Majora’s Mask and Smash Melee. But these days it seems like the only subsidiary not getting the developmental leeway that say The Legend of Zelda or Kirby or anything else is getting is the Pokémon Company. And so much of their money is coming out of merch and so many other things that Game Freak has the least amount of incentive to keep pumping out games. The games are the least of their profits. They could be left alone for five years the same way new Zelda Games are usually a twice-per-console (I’m including handhelds) affair. I mean, I know the answer is capitalism but capitalism is already doing so much heavy lifting in all other aspects.
@zjzr08Ай бұрын
Nintendo probably just lets them I assume, because it hasn't been to a point of "undisgraceful" (even though I might think it has been). I agree it's out of character from Nintendo to allow a product they have a lot of influence to have a lot of unatisfied backlash (they are usually "squeaky clean"), but maybe this is where GF had some objections that Nintendo just lets them be. Some interviews coming from Masuda himself say that TPC and Nintendo lets GF has its autonomy, and unless Masuda is lying (which to be fair, the Dexit debacle shows that there is doubt with him) then de jure Nintendo doesn't influence GF's decisions as much for Pokemon. I have to finish the video, just to see the argument though (although I know Nintendo part-owns Creatures so it isn't true 1/3 each).
@zjzr08Ай бұрын
Ok, I watched it to the end, and it mostly says Nintendo has the most influence in how the Pokemon brand is being managed over all. Interestingly I don't disagree to that, but I do disagree that they are the ones telling GF to release games each year against their will. As you said it is out of character for Nintendo to rush games and they will typically want the games to have as less drama attracted as there is. But even with the backlash of games even since LGPE (many felt it was too basic for a $60 game) I don't seemingly think Nintendo cares to change it per se. IMO Game Freak has the final say for game design decisions and also game management, but they would need to defer it to Nintendo, which Nintendo for the post part seems to allow them. If stuff like National Dex, much less glitches in a game, return of certain features, and longer development times, I think I agree it should be directed to Nintendo. Not to put responsibility on them, but rather using their power to pressure Game Freak to have certain standards met before releasing a game.

Pokemon has the unique issue of needing to align the games with the TGC, with the anime, with the manga. If one thing gets delayed all of them get delayed. Given the amount of tie-ins and whatnot, that is kinda problematic.
@AerafuzАй бұрын
The only issue I have with this is that it GREATLY implies that Nintendo is behind many of what the community considers Pokemon's bad gameplay decisions, or that the game's quality was due to Nintendo's fault. **Considering Nintendo had to publicly apologize for Scarlet and Violet's poor optimization not long after release,** it's hard to say that poor overworked GameFreak simply took the blame while big boss Nintendo snickered in the corner. Especially when there are plenty of interviews that showcase that GameFreak's choices in the "international Era" - That I've dubbed because 2013 was when Pokemon games released internationally all at once instead of released first then a translation later on - are deliberate in scope: no hard mode toggle and forced experience share was because their target demographic is kids with low attention spans in the mobile era of games, they want kids to easily complete a game and are fighting that attention span with easy to access mobile games. While their optimization issues could also stem from just how poor their coding is. Remember Iwata was the genius that helped Pokemon Gold and Silver have Kanto, yet after the International Era started and Iwata was absent with Pokemon especially after his death Pokemon has gotten so bloated even in the expanse of being forced to be a console series - to the point that they decided to cut Pokemon out in order to likely save data and it shows even with Scarlet and Violet that it doesn't work with optimization. It doesn't help that GameFreak likes to divide their small staff for other projects which I'd argue really cuts against a game's optimization. There was even a point when Pokemon's CEO told Nintendo the Switch would be a flop in the mobile era, and while GameFreak was likely forced to make a console Pokemon game, which I believe Nintendo helped with Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee in order to get a game out in 2018, it's possible that Pokemon likely would've gone completely mobile had Sword and Shield not proven to sell well, or that Ishihara wasn't convinced the Switch was a seller.

In fact, my thought, based on interviews, was that while all three shared TPCI, Nintendo was using TPCI to pressure or meddle in Game Freak's affairs. This video just further proves my conclusion. My main beef was always "why do the devs, the people making the games, have to answer to the marketing/promotions people, the people reliant on said games and characters to be made in order to do their job?" It's just weird. And here's the answer in all it's ridiculous logic. Game Freak really got a bad deal.

@@zjzr08 I mean, if the interviews are to believed, then we'd have gotten a better gen 6 game than what we got no thanks to corporate meddling to keep the games "safe". I do think Nintendo treats their first party studios differently from their second party studios. They have absolute control over their first party studios so naturally, there wouldn't be any crunch time (they'll always adjust if needed). For second party studios, they only have a degree of control and I'm willing to believe they are on a tighter leash because of that. Game Freak's a special case because of pokemon. They're making sure they have their golden goose in check. Game Freak isn't first party from what I know. If it was, we wouldn't even be having this discussion probably.

@@encapturer Except there difference and most people show by your comment don't know or understand what each company do. Which is why this video will hopefully cover the difference. GameFreak are a game development company, they make the game of pokemon. They are not just the ground level dev's. They handle everything from planning and producing. That why Masuda job title used to be 'Director' at GameFreak during most of the production. Because he is helming the game. (Note Game Director is different from Movie and TV director.) TPC handles everything that isn't the games. Such as the publishing, marketing, licensing of everything pokemon. They handle the card games, anime, manga, film and much more. The only time TPC are involved with the game is to handle publishing, marketing, licensing of the game. And most cases, they don't do much because a lot of the choice would made by GameFreak. The choice of when to release the game or age rating would be done by GameFreak first, they then tell TPC which allows them to start making marketing for the game. Gamefreak also owns TPC. TPC are not shorthand for management, they do much much more then that and are own by Gamefreak. Gamefreak are not shorthand for ground level devs, they manage and produce the game themselves.

@@lukestarford7608 The actual IP is under the control of the The Pokemon Company/Nintendo. Game Freak owns a share and the general soft agreement between the involved parties is that as long as Game Freak can regularly output new generations, they can have effective control over the future of the IP. Nintendo can dislodge Game Freak if they were a considerable disaster that needed to be replaced for new entries. Despite the technical defects, Scarlet and Violet are the best performing entries since the originals and the IP is in its strongest phase is associated materials so, there is no need for those drastic moves but in the case of actually broken game or a game taking more than 5 years, there might be a need to do so.

OK, watching the video, there is a summary that says that Moon cannot confirm or deny if Nintendo directly mandates Game Freak, but it has the power to do so. I don't disagree with this possible reality, but I also think that based on info that we do know that game wise that Nintendo (and TPC) does give GF a lot of autonomy in making their Pokemon games. So in essense it is true Nintendo has the most influence among the 3 in the conglomerate, they just let GF be IMO. That being said it also reinforces that Nintendo doesn't care about blunders GF made as long as it seems to get them money - I don't think they directly impose a yearly schedule, but they neither stop GF (game directors in particular) from doing it IMO.

Just a quick note, while Iwata did help with Gold and Silver's development, the statement of him compressing the whole game is an unfounded rumour that simply wasn't thoroughly checked until 2023, and what he did in reality was instead optimize some code to reduce load times, with all the extra space in Gold and Silver coming from I believe newer cartridges having more size.
@PIKMINROCK1Ай бұрын
@@Dukstless it's not an unfounded rumor. It was mentioned in the Iwata Asks for HGSS. The problem was misinterpreting what they meant by compression. This is one of those topics that lives rent free in my head. I knew most of what was brought up, but the smaller nuances behind the IP being put in a neat and tidy order really helps bring things into focus. Though still not a 100% confirmed, I do believe that Nintendo being the "main head" behind this collaboration makes the most sense. Also just wanted to point out that DYKG stated about a year or so ago that Iwata didnt personally work on the code for any pokemon games. He made an algorithm that was used in Earthbound to help speed up the game in certain places. That same algorithm was applied to Gold and Silver. The real reason Game Freak was able to fit the entire game on a single cartridge is because they were allowed to use a Megabyte cartridge which was double the size of other Gameboy games at the time. Iwata did help a lot clearly, but the rumor about him single handedly making the games fit onto the cartridge arent true.

another good video thank you, I think the script was really good actually, the little jokes helped to break up the pace and while I've seen it done before, I think the VSauce style intro of the topic where you start with something unrelated and then having it come back full circle in the ending is always satisfying. i would like to say that I still feel that the siivagunner music is incredibly distracting, as I'm trying to process a lot of information, while I feel it is explained well, at the same time the siivagunner mashups of 2 songs I know at the same time makes it hard to focus on it. I think it is specifically the mashups as half the time my brain is trying to figure out the joke and the other half it is hearing 2 songs mashed together and unwillingly attempting to separate them. I've expressed this sentiment before but I understand if I am the minority, I think if you used regular music the volume balancing with your admittedly warm, low and smooth voice would be adequate. thanks for this video as I have been interested in this topic tor a while!

Ok, yeah, this was definitely one of your more all over the place videos narratively (positively). The Family Guy writing parallel with the cutaway gag... well gag, was hilarious. As for the content of the video, in particular the topic of Nintendo maybe having a stake on Creature, that's something I remember having heard about way back. When there were conversations about Pokémon relation with Nintendo, I for a time would talk like "well actually it's three owners, but also it's majority Nintendo anyway, because they have a majority stake at Creatures, which end up meaning they own more than just a third". That is, I was like that, until people told me Nintendo didn't in fact own anything of Creature, at which point I checked and there was indeed nothing about even a minor stake ownership. Well, at the same point that you being right would make past me feel validated, I still have to put into question your conspiracy theory of Creatures being the third unlisted company they own stake at, tho. XD Like, what would be the odds of that company being just any of the other 2nd party companies that work with them. Hal themselves (unlikely since Warpstar is listed on it's own), Camelot or Grezzo. Maybe Intelligent Systems, which you mentioned they 'share' the Fire Emblem IP with, and which differently from Hal they don't have a separate entity to manage the IP. Hell, they could even have stakes at BanMco, since they work so closely nowadays. Most likely tho, it would be DeNa, the company that Nintendo got like 15% stake when they entered a partnership for them to be the developers of Nintendo mobile endeavors (and to which it was never reported of Nintendo disinvesting on them). And on one last note, I was wondering together on that list from the previous paragraph if it could've been Sora Ltd. But then I was curious about that specific case and realized that is actually only a micro business Ltd. to hire Sakurai and his wife as free lance, so it wouldn't really make sense at all lol. BUT I did see that between 2009 and 2012, Nintendo and Sora Ltd. co-owned (80-20 stake) a studio called Project Sora, which was used specifically to develop Kid Icarus (so if that shareholders report was a bit older it could've been that too).
@zjzr08Ай бұрын
@hpfred I think Creatures may be part-owned by Nintendo but from what I know it's only like 10% (which means if Nintendo has 32% ownership, they have 3.4% from Creatures, meaning they have 35.4% "influence" which is still isn't majority of TPC). EDIT: Nintendo now has its own Bandai Namco adjacent conglomerate called Studio 2 and Studio S.
