MOON KNIGHT: Who's Inside the Sarcophagus? - THIRD IDENTITY and Twist Ending Explained

Moon Knight Episode 4 gave us a lot to talk about. Is Marc in an asylum? Has everything been in his head? Is he dead? Who is Hippo Lady? But for us the biggest question is, who is inside the sarcophagus? It's probably the third personality that's been teased throughout the show. But it could also be Khonshu, an animated character, or Kevin Feige himself. We've got a lot of fun theories, and I promise you one of them is going to be right.

The ending of episode 4 of Moon Knight upended the entire show. Was the whole series in Marc’s mind? Is the asylum in Marc's mind? We’ve already put out a couple videos, plus our ending explained, exploring those options. But now I want to hone in on one specific detail about the finale. Who is in this sarcophagus?
There are a couple obvious answers, but we have a few theories that might surprise you. And I have one theory that is very off the wall, but I’m praying to Khonshu that it's true. Seriously it would be the coolest, weirdest twist in any Marvel show.
First, I think one thing about this ending is clear. Even if the asylum is real, then portions of this ending are happening in Marc's mind. He cannot physically meet Steven in the real world. So, even if he really is in an institution, he is at least hallucinating Steven. So, we can reasonably assume that the other sarcophagus is also in his mind.
Unless, like, the hot new thing for treating the mentally is placing them standing up in sarcophagi-but I doubt it.
So whoever is in this thing was either manifested by Marc-or it’s something that has infiltrated Marc’s mind.
Let’s talk about the most obvious answer for who is inside this thing, before we get to the freaky theories. [more like a freaky circle] This is Marc’s third personality. In the comics, he adopts two alter egos, playboy billionaire philanthropist filmmaker Steven Grant. In the show, they reinvented him as a hapless, sweet gift shoppist.
But in the comics, the other alter ego is Jake Lockley, a mustachioed cab driver who gathers info from the streets. Now later issues of Moon Knight made it clear that these alter egos were actual alter personalities, and Marc had dissociative identity disorder since he was a child.
Steven was Marc’s childhood best friend, and Jake became more of a protector personality. There was always something darker about Jake-he was a little more prone to violence.
Now, in this show we have seen numerous hints that Mars has more than 2 identities. Some of these hints were obvious, like when neither of them remember going on a killing spree [what did you do/not me].
But other hints were more subtle-like why would Marc make a date with this woman? [best steak in town]. She’s pretty, but Marc is laser focused on his mission, and living near his ex-wife, who he’s hiding from. He wouldn’t risk running into her at a steak joint. It’s obviously a third personality that lives Steven’s life better than him.
There are even indications that this third personality took over during the fight for the scarab. Remember, Steven wakes up with his jaw out of place. So it took one hell of a fall to knock Marc out. Maybe, in Germany, he stays knocked out, and it’s the brutal violent Jake Lockley who killed these people.
There’s another strange indication of Jake leading Steven’s life, in the fourth episode. Just before he’s supposed to belay down, this happens.That’s the same sound as when he switches bodies before [clip]. And he appears to punch himself in the jaw. Maybe this was the third personality breaking out, then punching Steven so he can take over the body.
There are other hints that Jake is in the show, like triple mirrors, and 3 Oscar Isaacs in the credits. This sarcophagus is also blood red, indicating a violent personality. It’s also standing up, while Steven’s was lying down. This indicates that Stevem is passive, at rest-while this altar is violent and ready to spring into action.
Also, this figure on the sarcophagus looks like a ba-bird. This is a very interesting addition. The ba-bird was an aspect of the mummified person’s soul. It was able to travel out of the tomb to the outside world, but always had to return to the body.
It is interesting if this is Jake. Because, Jake is trapped inside this tomb most of the time, or trapped inside Marc’s mind. But his ba, the spirit, is able to occasionally venture into the outside world, do some murderin’, before it has to return to the tomb.

We seen the 3rd personality at the end of episode 2. At the end in Egypt when we see him(jake?) Drinking heavily. I don't think that was Marc because we haven't seen any abusive habits or anything drinking related. Plus I don't think Marc would get blacked out drunk knowing he may not be the personality to be in control when he wakes up. Also what goes great with steak? Wine. Maybe jake is the alcoholic rampage personality

Dream scenario for me: Jake is in there, he breaks out of the sarcophagus on his own and Marc and Steven see a trail of blood and beaten up orderlies as well as a discarded straightjacket and mask and go into a room and see Jake with his back to them playing a song like "Moonshadow" on a guitar(a reference to Issac's real life ability to play). And it totally takes them aback because he's this violent personality but he's a fan of sweet, pretty songs and plays them just as beautifully.

He sees all that after the drugs have worn off. That's how he's able to walk and run whereas before his vision was blurry and he couldn't even get out of his wheelchair. It's 50/50 to me if it's all in his mind or if it's real and he immediately started hallucinating as the drugs wore off. Guess we'll find out next week.

Going on that horcrux/DID idea - if Mark/Steven/Jake has 3 separate identities, perhaps Khonshu split his 'essence' into three separate pieces and lodged them inside the three identities, so if one piece was compromised, the other two would be there to fix the problem...free the third. Perhaps each identity has their own subconscious realm - Steven's subconscious is the fear and doubts side that thinks it's broken and needs therapy, so creates a mental institute; Jake is the ego that only thinks of itself as real, and the rest of the world is just his personal playground that he controls - so his subconscious is that of an adoration-seeking movie director who has total control of the fake reality, where everyone is an actor doing his bidding; and Mark is the adventurer/wanderer whose subconscious leaves him unbound to anything - the space explorer wandering the limitlessness of the cosmos and going on unreal adventures. Would leave so much open to future shows and possibilities. And plays well with Joseph Campbell's theories. When entering any temple of any mythology, you must pass through the gaze of two frightening guardians - 2 lions, 2 ogres, 2 beasts, etc - one representing Fear (Steven) and the other representing the Desire to be loved/adored (Jake). You must subdue these beasts before you can enter the holy temple...much like Mark passed between the 2 lions in the temple. I may be overthinking it

I love the take of Jake being the personality that is sort of taking on Bushman's role. It would add up too, with Jake being locked deep away and only recently being able to break out like Steven has.

Dr Strange alluded to the root of existence where the mind controls everything. Whether it’s the Norse “BELIEVING” in Valhalla, T’Chala seeing his father on a savannah, the Egyptian field of reeds/Mental Institution, or Kakashi talking to his Dad at a fire, when so disconnected from the body in the moment of death you inability to sense your surroundings allows the soul/conscious to create a plane of existence it BELIEVES in. It may be why the gods have retreated to the overvoid. The domains they reigned in are manifested at the root of existence by the literal belief in it and humanities waning faith has literally left no place for them

When Stephen hit himself, I believe that was Mark. Mark said he would push him off a cliff for trying to get with his wife. Mark hit Steven and made him fall down the tomb. essentially pushing him off a cliff.

As fun as theorizing can be, I think MCU shows have shown that the simplest option is usually the case. That doesn't invalidate eagle-eyed reviewers and fans or make the writers bad, but if we look back at Loki and WV and such, usually the first or second idea was right. (Not Mephisto, but a manifestation of Wanda's grief with Agatha taking advantage of it, for example.) That being said, Jake is likely in the sarcophagus and responsible for some of the more extreme violence and the mental hospital is the field of reeds.

I still stand by me theory. That Jake is Khonshu. And that’s how Khonshu can be Marc/Steven Avatar. By the end of the series. Jake/Khonshu will be able to interact with the two. Also how can they not interact with Jake, but only “black out” and have no memory of what happen? When he’s Jake/Khonshu he is basically Immortal and doesn’t need the suit. Jake is the embodiment of a suit for Khonshu if that makes sense.

Khonshu Reborn could be likely. Heavy Metal magazine series made into a film "Immortal" had Horus roundabout escape his death-sentence by getting a suitable mortal pregnant so she gave birth to his reincarnation... it was a long series. Khonshu likely knew he would be punished so hid part of his power within Jake/Steven/Mark to become born-again since a lot of Egyptian belief deals with rebirth. Huh... what if Jake is the full avatar of Khonshu while the others have only been borrowing the suit & powers like Steven "Mr Knight" did(?)

As much as I like the idea of Khonshu being the other personality, I don't think that will happen. He's untrustworthy and suspicious, sure, but the show isn't making him openly manipulative like he seems to be in the comics. To me, Jake is the best guess (and the most appropriate fit). If this asylum is all in Marc's head (which I hope it is because, really?), then I think part of escaping will be accepting all his personalities (himself) and using them all to break free and save the day. Honestly, I just really don't want this to turn out to be fake, or a show within a show. And I *really* don't want Marc's other personality being Layla's dad's killer. So cliché, and it's way too much for Marc to bear. Besides, why would Marc so openly talk about "his partner" to Layla (assuming they *are* the same) when he refuses to discuss him with Steven and avoids the other sarcophagus?

Marc's partner from the comics was Bushman and he was the one that killed Layla's father. I just finished reading the Lemire and Smallwood run, and yeah they had Steven Grant as a movie producer who became a director of a Moon Knight movie. Of all the Moon Knight runs, this is the one that appears to be the biggest source of inspiration for the show. The description of the entire run (#1 - 14) are described on Marvel as: Moon Knight (2016) #1-14. A story of birth, death and rebirth unlike any other! Marc Spector (A.K.A. Moon Knight/Jake Lockley/Steven Grant) has been fighting criminals and keeping New York City safe for years…or has he? When he wakes up in an insane asylum with no powers and a lifetime's worth of medical records, it calls his whole identity - identities - into question. Something is wrong, but is that something Marc himself? Delve deep beneath the mask of Moon Knight to meet the many men inside his head! While Steven Grant prepares for a box-office smash, Jake Lockley is arrested for murder! And as the muddled mind of Moon Knight reaches its limit, the secrets of his past are revealed. Moon Knight's survival depends on answers, but Marc Spector is plagued by nothing but questions!

Another reason why Steven and Mark forgot about the third personality so soon afterwards could be that their subconscious is suppressing that memory, trying to prevent Mark's mind from breaking even further.

I agree 100%. When someone has DID, a traumatic event occurring during their childhood is what causes it, keeping their personalities from integrating. Usually, one of those alters will be the one that absorbs all of the traumatic memories and feelings to protect the other alters and the host (in this case Steven and Marc). So yeah, what you said makes total sense because in order to keep Steven and Marc safe, Jake's memories can't be accessed.

personally, theres so much build up for the character in the sarcophagus for which most comic reader knows. I think its someone else or something considering the fact that the person or the thing inside didnt make any sound for someone being stuck in a coffin like what steven did. So my personal theory, it is an aspect of ammit, as she noticed movements outside and trying to break free. Ammit might influenced Marc and steven before … than when they have noticed traces of her which might try to judge them using his memories (of his parents) maybe as a part of the process to take over the body.

My bet is the third identity is layla. Jake is too obvious. To add, marc met layla at the khonshu dig site, she was with her father when bushman attacked. Bushman killed everyone, marc tried to save layla. Layla and marc were mortally wounded, but layla was able to get khonshu to rescue marc. When he was revived, layla became his "tyler durden" like an imaginary friend. Steven was created to shield himself from the trauma. This explains why khonshu prefers to hijack layla, why layla has the same love for egyptology and french quotes as steven, and her skillset similar to marc.

Makes sense. Layla is a hallucination. She died at the dig. Marc couldn' cope, so he created this new identity. That's why Harrow told "Layla" to Wake Up.

just a note to add to the theory that it is khonshu: the moment where Stephen is trying to give the Scarab to Ethan Hawke, sorry I forget his story name, khonshu is able to physically keep him from doing it. I don't remember any other time that one of the other personalities was able to break through in this way. on the other hand, it is established that the barrier between them is breaking down, so . . .

If Khonshu is inside Oscar Issacs’ character as the Scotty alter, it could be an interesting nod to Scotty from Star Trek who was a “miracle worker” engineer, this could be an interesting way to symbolize who is controlling the “ship” that is Mark’s body. Also, the idea of a possible animated sequence is interesting. Did anyone notice that the Hippo goddess shared a very similar voice and emotional reaction to the cartoon hippo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? In WFRR the first major physical interaction between Valiant and a cartoon is his brush with the hippo, from there we begin to see the film change, the fantastic world of cartoons (visual symbols that represent larger ideas) integrate fully into the living world of humans. As Mark and Steven grant interact with the Hippo Goddess, it might be a fun nod to WFRR and signifies the moment when Mark and Steven enter into an episode that immerses them into the supernatural world of Gods and Goddesses (which are similar to cartoons, since they too are often immortal beings, impervious to harm that could kill a human, and also symbolize ideas and things). If they end up going into a full on cartoon style realm that would be very interesting, but I felt this may have been just a subtle nod that we are now entering a new realm where our understanding of reality is going to have to coincide with the supernatural ways of Gods and Goddesses. Just some theories :) I am probably way off 😆

That would be such a fun twist if this was a movie within a movie and he’s director, writer, and star of the show. These are slightly true events that happened but not entirely. Maybe he was Moon Knight long ago and Marc was mind wiped by the Eneead. He remembers the details as his imagination and got rich off writing/ producing the supposedly fiction in his mind. Konshu is locked away and his alter, Jake, has been trying to free him all along. Stargate SG-1 did something like this in their episodes and I thought it was kind of cool. The parody tv show was only allowed to persist by the government to make the general public think Stargate is just a tv show when reality it was a real thing. And if anybody really did witness a Stargate mission and try to expose it, people would just think they’re confusing reality with a tv show lol
