Simulation of the Moon's orbit, phases, and ground view.
Main Window: Wide angle view (122°) facing due south from Towson, MD, USA.
Time is accelerated to illustrate the diurnal motion of the sky from 20 Feb - 04 April, 2017.
The simulation begins with the Moon at Third Quarter phase and on the Meridian as seen from Towson. The Moon completes a full lunar cycle and extends to the following cycle's First Quarter, for 1.5 lunar cycle in total ending in early April 2017.
Left inset:
The orbit of the Moon in 2017, viewed from the north pole of the ecliptic, with the vernal equinox to the right. The sizes of the Earth and Moon are exaggerated by a factor of 15.
Right inset:
The phase and libration of the Moon for 2017, at hourly intervals.

Very nice compilation.. And now always keep in mind that: "despite" 🔸the very similar size (Distance) 🔸the very similar speed (Parallaxe), 🔸the very similar path (Analemma), 🔸the very similar type of movement (Moon moving/Sun still).. .. the sun should be 150 million km away and the moon 400.000 km away 😉👍🥃

2:50 I noted that the Moon was in the constellation Leo when full, so that would have been in March, right?

When look at real sky, the perpendicular of the crescent not coincide with the center of the sun. Why?

Thank you, it seems like the sky is moving and the ground is stationary...makes sense because the weather systems move west to east, toward the rising Sun, and we don't have supersonic wind, we often have still nights and many calm days 😁

No, the sky is not moving.

The Earth is the one that spins, and the atmosphere spins with it. Also, Earth does not spin at supersonic speed, it takes *24 hours* to give just one full turn. Imagine a roulette that took 24 hours to spin once. Is that fast? Also, google Leon Foucault's experiment that definitely proved Earth's rotation. You can test it yourself - once you learn how pendulums move.

how come east on the left side of the screen and west is on the right side? shouldn't they be reversed?

I get this question a lot :) Imagine if you went outside and faced south. North would be directly behind you, yes? So which way would East be if you were facing south? Which direction is west?

Gutter Phoenix not really, because the Moon is enlarged so we can see its phase on screen. So it looks like a solar eclipse but in fact it’s just close to the Sun in the sky at new phase.

solar eclipse or not solar eclipse? 0:52
@kitcanyon658
@kitcanyon658 Жыл бұрын
A new moon can be a solar eclipse but not always. This is because the moon's orbital plane is tilted to that of earth's.
