I'm going through your older videos and find them interesting and valuable. A while back I took Coursera class on astro-archaeology. This professor claimed the shafts in the Great Pyramid of Khufu could not be ventilation shafts because vertical ones would sufficed and have been easier to make. He also claimed that the south facing shafts pointed to the stars in Orion's belt and Sirius. His conclusion was that the shafts were to "direct symbolically the Pharaoh to his proper destinations in the sky."
@LaunchPadAstronomy6 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting. I understood it to be so that the Pharaoh could watch his kingdom but I'm willing to defer to the archeologists on that one.
@gregtavarez3322 Жыл бұрын
@@LaunchPadAstronomy you guys still believe it was built for the pharaohs? Why? Do you not realize that the shafts point to the constellations because they MAYBE directly influence the power generates in the giza pyramid? I mean cmon use common sense.

Early astronomy sounds more challenging than it does now due to a lot of reliance on assumptions, even Eratosthenes had to assume the distance between Alexandria and Seyene. Ptolemy's idea of epicycles and the difference around Earth to explain retrograde motion was very interesting, and definitely a thinker in his free time!
@geothon2 ай бұрын
He had the distance measured by the hired professional walker. Sure he had to assume that the number he was given was correct, but the actual measurement was performed.

Spherical not round. A cylinder is round. A cone is round. They know that the Earth was a Sphere, like a basket ball. Clauduius Ptolemy did not call the book we, in our time, call the Almagest, for him and his time it was called by another name, a more impotent name.

Aristarchus of Samos was correct at such an early time in history about Astronomy, it is amazing. We are a Sun centred universe and planets rotate around the sun. However, nobody believes him...According to what I read so far Ptolemy was wrong about a geocentric earth-centered universe. However, Ptolemy was correct about how our planets rotate.

This was ok until you started talking about equinoxes, then retrograde and epicycle on the deferent. Brother ! This "explanation" is for someone who has studied astronomy in depth. If you want the general public to understand what the heck youre talking about, you have to define your words. Afterall, any body who can understand all this doesnt need to have it explained.

If you don't know that the heliocentric is the geocentric system from a different perspective then you should really not be trying to discuss this topic. (Psss the heliocentric system literally uses the measurements of the Geocentric systems. All actual real astronomers use the geocentric system because they live on earth). The Greeks probably gave up on the theory when they realized that if they're using the math and measurements from the Earth which makes up the geocentric perspective then it's exactly the same and there was no need to go through with the belief.
