Moon Township residents upset about noise from new megachurch next-door

A new megachurch in Moon Township has found itself in the middle of controversy over noise. Neighbors who live near the church say the outdoor worship services are breaking the township's noise ordinances. KDKA-TV's Shelley Bortz reports.

I’m a Christian and even I don’t agree they should be allowed to make so much noise. I live right next door to a small church and we never have heard them make a peep the whole 18 years I’ve lived here. This mega church should have to hold their services inside and not disturb the housing area they moved into….they really aren’t being very nice. This would be different if they moved into the middle of town and noise from other businesses was already present….but they moved into the middle of nature so it’s different.

The parcel of land has about 60 marked parking spaces, with more if the grounds are used as parking. The house next to the tent is about 50x160ft and the tent is larger than the house: I estimate about 175ft x 60ft, dwarfing even large wedding venue tents. A tent that size with stage will seat about 800 people. The megachurch is preaching to the faithful, but not to the community. If they want the neighborhood to join in, they need to first be good neighbors. People have complained about sound checks at 6:30 in the morning, where even using yard power tools is illegal. Their closest neighbors are a mere 800ft away and in a quiet morning, anything loud is going to be very noticeable. More than a few homeowners were asked if they would sell their property. As a Christian, my feeling is that this church is behaving in a very unchristian manner. A tent can seat a lot of people, and hold a large sound system, but if it has soured relations with the community it professes to try to reach, that's arrogance and hubris.

Jesus received a lot of hate and indignation when He walked the Earth and preached to thousands at a time. Cured the sick, fed crowds with a couple of fish and some bread. Challenged proud, corrupt leaders who called Him a 'blasphemer'. Was unjustly judged and died a horrible, tortuous crucifixion, yet 3 days later, He conquered death and saved humanity. Accepted the punishment that we all deserve for our sinfulness, which separates us from God. We should be humble and grateful for Jesus' work of redemption, not proud and full of ourselves. Makes me think of a scene from the film 'Jesus Christ Superstar' where the high priest, Caiaphas complained to Jesus that the crowd following him was 'much too loud'.

I can think of worse things that cause noise disturbances and glad there isn’t alcohol and drugs. I wouldn’t be as bothered with the level of noise in this video for the church’s special week of worship. However, it looks like the church can easily make adjustments to abide by the 10pm to 7am quiet time period. Hope they adjust!

Agreed. I've seen vid of large event tent be lifted up by wind. In high winds and a wildfire, that could be very hazardous. Even just the tent catching fire would be horrible.......with toxic smoke from the material, and possible embers spreading the fire.
