I watched you last video on removing the wheel bearing using metal rod to knock them out, and I changed bearings on my triumph using that method , and now I was stuck on 1982 Honda CBX550 as these are bit more difficult to get out, saw your new gadget sealey AK716 how easy it was to remove the bearing, so I paused the video ordered a set from Amazon, so tomorrow i will be able to do the job. It's all about knowing what tools to use, without watching your video I would have never know , Big thank you and keep up the good work.

Hi Peter, am glad that the second video gave you a solution, it's pretty easy to knock bearings out gently, if you can get to the back of them, but it's always more gratifying to pull them out with a proper tool if you can afford it... good luck with it, hope it goes well for you!

Del I love your work and you have been a great inspiration to me for years. I am a Suzuki owner as well. Please allow me to say that if you use a socket on the edge of the rim to push in the second bearing the pressure might push back the first one through the spacer. The second tool you showed works much better in keeping the first bearing seated in its place, I use one like that plus old bearings (that I slotted so they don't get stuck) to press on both the races at the same time.
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
That would only be a problem if you wound it down to hard, as you saw in the video, you should be able to turn the spanner with one finger almost as you wind it in, the minute it goes tight, stop dead... and you can tell that both bearings are at the same correct depth cos the rubber seals push in dead flush, and also the spacer tube can be moved with your finger, also if you pull both bearings in that the same time with matching discs, then you can still squeeze them too tight, and if one bearing binds more than the other, you can pull them in unevenly, the socket works fine, just go steady nipping it in... thanks for your input Glauco, always much appreciated, ride safe, Del
@glaucolorenzetti13435 жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 thanks a lot for your answer Del. Just a clarification, when I said both races I intended both inner and outer race of the first bearing only, so that the first bearing doesn't move and no excessive pressure can be applied to the inner race. Looking forward to your next videos.

@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Too right my friend, not just the concept of smacking them in, but dropping freezing cold metal in to a red hot hole, that's gonna case harden it in a moment making it brittle surely, like quenching hot metal in water... room temperature, then just press them in gently, works every time!

A video showing the correct way to install oil/grease seals and the reasoning how the lip/spring on the seal keeps the grease in and the dust out would be helpful to some.Most manuals don't show the fine details of which way the seal should be installed.
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
As an absolute rule all bearing seals (if you examine them) have a 'closed' side and an 'open' side, it may visually vary in looks, but no matter what, one side will always look slightly open and the other sealed, they always fit with the open side facing inwards to keep the grease in and then the outside sealed face to keep the dust out... it's a general rule for all oil seals buddy
@jamesweber49385 жыл бұрын
You and I know both know which way an oil seal is fitted but how many people watching the video know the "general rule" ?

@@jamesweber4938 Yeah, Point taken, i always have to strike a balance between sharing useful information, and not patronising,,..! not an easy balance aye.!
@jamesweber49385 жыл бұрын
Definitely not an easy balance. I will be removing the back wheel on my 1300 Yamaha Midnight Star today to replace the needle roller bearing in the belt drive pulley that is prone to failure. When the bearing fails it "welds" itself to the axle. Then you have to cut the axle to get it out. Very poor design.

Does it matter which way the rim is installed on the bike? I mean is there a difference whether the smaller hole is on the left or the right side? In the rear wheel it's obvious due to the sprocket but does it matter at the front?
@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
Yes it does very much, obviously your tyre is rotational and it must rotate in a forward direction according to the arrows on the side wall, and if it is a cast aluminium wheel, check on the castings on the spokes, they often have an arrow there too to indicate rotation.

Hi del, im putting in new wheel bearings, the bearings should be flush(tight) against the spacer yes? Holding it in place? The spacer shouldnt be moving around or wiggling around right? It should be held in place by the bearings? (05 fz6) I did it this way, but noticed that if the bearings are pressing against the spacer, the bearings arent actually rotating freely and take a fair bit of effort to get them to move by my fingers, did I do it correctly??? Is this normal?
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Snug against the spacer tube, but not tight so it's jammed, and the race should rotate by hand though the action may be firm not slack..

@distancejunkiemonkey4491 Жыл бұрын
I have a 2008 GSF1250 SA. The manual says to install the right wheel bearing then the spacer followed by the left bearing, leaving "clearance" between the spacer and the left bearing. The spacer is longer than the distance between the bearing seats. I obviously installed them wrong because the spacer was wedged in between. So for my second go, how much "clearance" is appropriate? and I'm assuming the proper way is to keep checking the clearance as the bearing gets close? Or is there a depth measurement?
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
"Clearance" just means to NOT wedge the spacer tube solid.. press the second bearing in gently, stop once you feel it seat, and then the tube should be able to shift under light pressure so it can line up with the axle... to my knowledge there is not measurement !

How do you keep the opening ends of the bearings clean? (when you have the wheels on). Do you just keep on top of them with some WD40? I'm referring to when the wheels are still on, just the opening area. Had my wheels replaced recently and it seemed a lot of grit road salt got in that area.
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Your bearings should live behind the dust seal, which you saw me fit at the end (the two black rubber rings), these have a soft lip round the inside, like a mini fork seal, that seals against the axle and prevents water getting in... Also, if you look at the blue ring on the bearing itself, that is also a dust and water seal to keep the water out... so unless you jet wash the bike and do silly things like squirt the water at the bearing, then they should stay dry in there...
@busavalley86954 жыл бұрын
Greetings Delboy. I just ordered my bearings and want to make a press lile yours before the bearings arrive. Is there any way you can do me a solid and measure the washer for me? I have calipers so i can get the correct size. Would appreciate it
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, i actually didn't make those discs to any specific size, they about 60mm in diameter with a hole big enough to take the threaded rod... as long as they overlap the outer ring of the bearing and press flat against it they work fine.. and if i want to push more precisely, i use a socket that very slightly smaller than the bearing outer..Hope that helps you mate, and good luck with yours.. Del.

@@CortinasAndClassics There should be no powder coat where the bearing actually sits... the hole they are pressed into is a precision cut, and they won't have put powder coating in there... it may be close to the edge of the hole, but not in it.... have you pulled the old bearing out yet then..?

@@CortinasAndClassics Oh i see, so the powder coater has coated inside the bearing seat? (They should always mask off the bearing seats when they layer the powder up....but its done now.).! OK then, well that must certainty be removed before you can install a bearing, they are a press fit into the bare metal as im sure you already know! The challenge is to get the hard coating out of that seat without using anything sharp or aggressive.. it's easy to damage the seat and that will impair the installation of the bearing...don't use any abrasive paper either as it'll scratch the inner face too, maybe try cutting a clean line around the top corner of the hole with a blade, don;'t get it inside the hole... and hopefully the coating which is hard will be brittle enough to chip away.!!!! Ho Johny, Its pretty simple stuff, often made so much easier just to see it done aye.. . I made the steel discs from some 5mm plate, drilled a hole then just made them round with a grinder.. works fine.. .and with the sockets, the trick is to use a socket thats the same size as the outer ring of the bearing (or very slightly smaller), and then they press exactly on the outer steel ring and not the bearing grease cover..!! last year i invested in a 3/4 drive jumbo socket set, big money, but so useful now.. i have sockets right out to 48mm, great for top yoke centre nuts, big wheel axle nuts, and of course a great range of bearing press dies..lol..

@@Moonfleet41I think I get what you mean about the plate thing and how to use the socket press. And 48mm sockets, bloody hell. I thought sockets that big were reserved for lorry parts =P
