Thank you so much for those kind words, it gives you a great sense of pride to take care of your own bike, and a wider pride of ownership, but don;t be too hard on the service guys, they have the passion to get up every single day and work one other peoples bikes, and the work they do has to meet safe standards while also making a profit so they can get paid and feed their family, it's not the dream job that some people think it is.. Take care my friend and enjoy your bike.

That's it the adjusting I'm not getting it right or not looking at something causing it I don't seei just ran up to the store first couple of times it hit 3 Rd fine then keeps missing it it's going beyond third in-between like 3 &4 th if I tP lightly on the shifter it goes into third if I don't then it misses fourth and goes into 5th?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 ай бұрын
@@peteclaps1339 The clutch pack adjustment is purely to allow for heat expansion, so it can expand and contract and not slip or drag... but if you're having issues selecting between gears, it could be worth taking a closer look at the transmission itself, drop the oil and make sure there's no debris in there. With the engine off and the back wheel lifted, you should be able to 'hand' shift up and down through the gears easily.. if you can't then you may have a bent selctor fork in the box..! not common, but possible if you've been stamping on it from time to time. !! just some thoughts.!
@peteclaps1339
@peteclaps1339 9 ай бұрын
It shifts easy and smoothly just pops out third or seems to get cought in-between 3rd and 4th meaning it's passing third but not quite into 4th just a light tap down puts it in third I am currently as we speak messing with the pawl not sure what the initial adjust would be if a new was installed say,then adjust accordingly I'd assume not sure how I'm supposed to be doing this really I learn flying by the seat of my pants:) thanks for your time bro. In advance. Your in England? Cold there huh, cause it sure as hell is here today in fla. I can't stand it. Hey Delroy.. thank you for the informative video, appreciate it. Hey bro, got a question for you . I just had Harley-Davidson install a brand new clutch hub assembly, unfortunately looks like they reused the pressure plate, the grub screw and the adjuster screw from the old clutch assembly ,also the inside of the ring gear is a blue color by the rivets. it looks burnt ? (Looks exactly like my old one that had 30,000 miles on)is that normal from the factory or should that be shiny please help, just paid $485 for a new clutch assembly,I hope I didn't get taken thank you in advance.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
The Harley main dealer will have given you an itemized bill im sure, every part replaced will have been listed and priced on there, and also any labour charges... if they charged you for a pressure plate, then it should be in there, if you suspect it's not, then maybe ask them and explain your concerns..! and if you have a suspicion that they are not being honest, then maybe ask to see the old parts they took out.!!

Hey Delboy, I have a 1997 Heritage Soft Tail. Clutch is acting oddly. When I let the clutch out it begins engaging too early. It begins to engage at less than one half inch release. The bike is creeping and down shifting feels very sticky. Recently changed all fluids and adjusted clutch per the usual specs. Can't seem to figure this out. Do you have any suggestions as to where I might look first. Experienced mechanic, not afraid to dig in. Thank you in advance for any help. Aaron In The U.S.A. East Coast :) P.S. Bike has 49,000 on it, very well maintained.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, check the freeplay at your lever, you need a minimum of 3mm gap between the clevice joint and the lever itself where the cable crosses, if you've any more than that, then you could be failing to pull the clutch open enough leading to the drag you're experiencing... it could be that your cable has stretched if it's the original one, alternatively you could leave a little less freeplay on the clutch pack adjustment... if you're any more than 1/2 turn then tha's also leaving a little too much slack... finally, if your plates are contaminated with burnt oil, or moisture content from condensation, it could be getting a bit stuck together... so if both adjustments don't help, then drop the plates out, measure them for tolerance (in your manual), and makes sure they're flat and not warped... hope that helps!

All those aftermarket units come with random different wiring, and just to make it more fun.. they give you no wiring diagram either.. i get this all the time with things like tail lights and indicators.. even Bates style headlights.... So what i do is touch each of the wires against a spare bike battery and see what lights up.. then label them with some masking tape and a pen.. if it helps you make a start, the black wires are usually earth (ground), so touch that on the battery earth terminal, then the colour wires in turn on the live terminal, and note down which wire lights what..! Hope that helps.. Good luck. Del.

I installed an elitemototech clutch lever on my fxdls, now with it adjusted every time I put it in 1st gear it lunges and stalls...isn't engaging right for some reason

Does the lever disengage the clutch fully? Is it too close to the bar to start with and not pulling in far enough? This is a potential problem with aftermarket levers, specially those where the owner wants them closer tot he bar for easier reach... if you try putting your factory lever back on for a moment, then test it to see if it engages safely and normally, if it does, then the lever design is the problem.

Again.... "What do you do if you don't have the proper tool," is what I love most about your channel, my friend. Improvise, adapt and overcome. I'm glad that even though you're getting a lot of the proper tools, you're still teaching us how to figure it out if we don't. Thanks again, sir.

Said that right brother, need a tool, make a tool!... maybe in the hope that it will motivate more people to get involved in maintenance when they haven't got the money to buy special tools, as that is often the biggest bar from getting involved! Have a great week buddy, ride safe...

That did not work for my clutch adjustment. As soon as I felt resistance I backed it off and locked it down. When I tried to tighten the clutch lever with the cable adjuster it never gave me any lever all the way out. I had to turn the allen key in a lot before I got any lever at all. Is my clutch just too worn?

Not necessarily, but the plates could be contaminated, so it could be a good opportunity to drop the plates out and give them a good clean and then re-install them all with fresh oil and see how it feels, good luck with it mate.

Does that not leave more of a belly in the bottom end of that chain?

Hi Del, Love the videos, Doing this job tomorrow afternoon, 1450 twin cam. I know I need the bike upright but do I need to have the back wheel off the floor to tension the chain?

Hi Rob.. great to hear you're getting involved, and hope you're looking forward to it.. With the back wheel, it can help to have it lifted so you can pop it in a high gear and then turn the wheel to rotate the chain in order to find the tightest spot.. obviously ONLY check the primary chain at its tightest spot.. so yes, using the back wheel is the easiest way.. Good luck with it and let us know how you get on mate... Del

All done today, got myself a small sealey lift and raised the bike just enough. Good job too as the Primary chain was tension was set at 3/8 so I changed to 5/8.

If the clutch is set too loose, will that set the friction zone of the clutch lever closer to the grip? Mine is that way right now and I want to be able to shift with just 2 fingers.
@Moonfleet41

No it shouldn't affect it, if it's too loose though, it will slip in cold weather, or whent he bike is stone cold, which could lead to premature wear.
