KZbin must know I need to do mine 😅 and I hadn't even done a search. Don't know what your views are, Del. But I once saw this guy get some dry fine sandpaper and crosshatch the inside of the brake and clutch master cylinders to de-glaze them. Your videos are timeless Del and Penny x

OK, cross hatching is done in cylinders to hone metal piston rings in... these cylinders have soft rubber seals and should be mirror smooth inside otherwise any roughness at all will accelerate wear on those seals and end them early.. just clean them, fit fresh new seals and fresh fluid, job done mate. !

I had to check and bleed my front cylinder on my 83 z750 ltd last week, all looked ok, ended up bleeding the calipers above the cylinder to get all the air out then used your top tip of taping up the lever overnight as it was still a bit spongy. 100% better in the morning!!

Important to mention… When the piston is in the rest position, the brake fluid will be balanced via The compensation hole. This compensation hole is very small, clean this compensation hole with a very thin wire of copper, if it would clog… you are guaranteed a dragging caliper, this has already happened to me twice!!! with the Honda CBX 1000. Stay Safe.

I didn't have the money to pay someone to do something I was perfectly capable out figuring out. Now days it's more about just not wasting money and knowing that the job is done correctly. I laugh when guys ask "you do your own brakes"? I always tell friends that are scared to do more than pump their own gas, "just put it back together the way you took it apart". Either way, KZbin channels like your's are a godsend now days. So much better than trying to read a greasy well used Chilton or Clymer manual with crap black and white photos back in the day. How did we survive lol?

Here's what gets me: See how simple and elegant design that master cylinder is? How did we de-evolve into the rubber hose, mounted on a stick up in the air like a hood ornament master cylinder? Sure for a $110 bucks more you can get the after thought reservoir that plugs in with no hose but even that is not nice, sleek, ununweird like what Del was working on. The one on my new Triumph looks like it was designed by an accountant.

Just me or has the 2x countersunk screws they use on every front lid of the reservoir always been made of Swiss Cheese?

This. They don't look that different, but when you have a mullered screw they make a world of difference. If you work on Japanese bikes, a set of JIS screwdrivers is a must have tool. Also when you do get the damaged screws out, put new ones in. They only cost a few quid for the OEM ones, or less from ebay for something compatible.

I have similar Tokico calipers on my ZX6-RR, but four pots not six, just for information when Kawasaki send their master cylinder kits the middle seal is not fitted as helpful Suzuki appear to do. Looking at the the seal you'd think that will never fit on there! well it does and there is a method I found to fit it which I discovered on another video, it is a bit stressful though! Just to let you know there is a bit of a gap in the method for some owners doing a brake rebuild. Great videos by the way, not being a total newbie on bikes after 20 plus years of racing but working on mostly new bikes so you don't really get the age related wear and things usually come apart really easily. Now having a small collection of older bikes (the newest is nearly 20 years old) I have had to learn a lot of new skills and I found your explainations invaluable. Keep up the good work....everyday is a school day.

Hi there, Delboy (and the rest of you guys). Now that you mention corrosion... I have an excellent tip in case you haven’t heard about that product. It’s called “Corrosion-X” and is quite inexpensive - they claim it’s used by the US Navy. It’s based on the fact that all metals are a little magnetic, so it binds to them magnetically - making it very durable even at high pressures and temperatures. I’ve used it myself and it’s amazing how effective it is (I tested it on a couple of screws etc in salt water, and the treated ones were like new after that treatment), My brake components haven’t been tested with it yet, but at least the outermost components such as that circlip and outer piston end will benefit from it... and probably the inner parts as well.

Hi Delboy. Great video. Just did the same job on my 1999 cbr600f. It was fine when I first fitted it but after leaving it a few hours I’m finding the piston isn’t returning back out and sometimes just stays fully in? I then press it a few times and it returns back out and will seem fine. I’ve definitely fitted it in the correct order. I’ve put red grease on the piston seal and clean brake fluid on the seal that attaches to the spring as my manual says to do. Brakes have been bled and no bubbles coming through calliper bleed screws so I’m stumped 🤔 any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks

Its cheaper buying the seal and spring kit instead of piston.Piston wont be damaged you just need to replace rubber seals spring and clip.

I think this vid confirms what is wrong with my FZ6 currently. The lever feels like it catches slightly before it begins to make pressure. Not great pressure either for a braided lines in a race set up. Calipers are completely free from air.

Great video thanks , just a quick one I have a 15.8mm / 5/8 master cylinder with 6 pot calipers but I want to change to nissin 4 pots , could I do that and keep my stock master cylinder without any problems , its a zx9r and I want to put the triumph/nissin 4 pots on but don't want to change master cylinder so do you know why people want new master cylinders and is it just down to the feel of the brake , do you have previous experience of something similar , any advice would be much appreciated

Im not the best qualified person to answer this one, but from what i understand, swapping from 6 to 4 piston calipers makes little difference as long as the collective pumped volume of fluid behind the pistons is the same or similar... and in most cases, 4 pot calipers have bigger pistons than 6 pots, so it is.. The swap is usually motivated by the 4 pots being less liable to jam up and easier to bleed.. If it was my bike, it'd plumb them up, and go for a careful ride, see how they feel..!

@@bccapone837It's not critical mate, at the very worst you might find you need a little more lever pressure to create the same force on the disc face, but if you switch over to some new copper sintered brake pads, they create a greater rolling drag and, therefore, more bite needing less lever pressure... so they'll more than compensate!

I have been pulling my hair out over the spongy front brake lever on my Gen2 Busa.Changed the hoses,replaced the caliper piston seals and vacuum pumped a whole bottle of new fluid through the system yet I still can't get the solid feel to the lever that I had when the bike was new.Without too much effort,the lever can be pulled back to the bar.Do you think rebuilding the master cylinder is a possible solution? Bike is 8 years old and just coming up to 30k on the clock.Also,what type of grease are you using on that rebuild? Red rubber?

Just to try and isolate one fault from another... when you pull the lever in, you say "without too much effort it can be pulled back to the bar"! Do you need to squeeze harder and harder to eventually achieve this... OR, do you pull the lever in, and if held at a constant pressure does the lever slowly sink back to the bar?... it's important to determine which,.!! have a check and let me know mate.. happy to help if i can..! @@Moonfleet41 Hi Del, if the lever is pulled in a few inches and held, it will slowly come back to the bar but it takes a few seconds for that to happen.If the lever is pulled with slightly increasing pressure,it will come all the way back to the bar quite easily.

@@captainbimble OK mate.. that confirms it.. the main seal inside your master cylinder is letting fluid past it.. its pretty dangerous obviously, so get yourself a kit asap and rebuild the whole thing... you'll get a new cup seal and metal piston with it, plus a new spring too... once you've done that, bleed it back up again and you'll have a rock hard one again right away.. !!!!

Ah circlips, ever noticed that if you deliberately try & ping one off out of sight somewhere, just by squeezing the pliers, it either bounces off something else & lands at your feet, or refuses to let go at all . . . but wave it at the job, . . . gone! : ) x

I bought complete new handle bar with master cylinder, but I think that something is wrong with cylinder. I perform air bleeding (conventional way and reverse), I don't think that air remain in system, but breaking force is just too weak, brake pads move just small amount, and there is almost no back pressure on lever. What is strange to me is when I press handle bar, there is significant fluid shooting in reservoir, I must put cap on reservoir otherwise I it would just spray all around. Is this normal behavior that fluid shoots out during pressing handle bar?

Hi there I'm being really thick you mentioned about a link to the circlip pliers I can't find it anywhere ? Everyones asking about red grease but no info on the pliers, the make and where I can get them from. I've tired removing the circlip with normals one but I can't get the clip out. @@Moonfleet41 is there anything comparable, my kit did not come with the grease, how do you think jus using brake fluid will work. Ive seen others do that. And cool fact, 90's yamaha four wheelers have same exact internals in master cylinder, its why i checked your vid out. Cylinder im rebuilding was all apart and i needed to kno how to put it together.
