I've loved watching this video. The smile on your face is like a kid at about 10 AM on Christmas. The only difference between a man and a boy is the size of his feet and the price of his toys, as the adage goes. Outstanding watching you enjoy that so much. Watch those thumbs, Brother!
@Moonfleet41

Thanks J, thumbs indeed, I've had a good practice with it now, in fact a whole day wheeling a fender! and no thumbs, but a few pinches here and there, so you do learn to keep your hands out the way!... Steering the metal is something you quickly realise you need to master, but am up for anything, just gonna make it happen, whatever it takes! Take care and enjoy your weekend, don't know if you're at home at the mo, but if you are, get out and enjoy that bike!

Delboy Great Video I was working for Monarch Airlines at Luton in the early 1990s and we had an Aircraft damaged by a Ground Servicing truck causing damage to a lower fuselage panel and I was tasked to help an Old Boy in the company in making a replacement Compound Curved Panel on an "English Wheel " The chap in question I was to help was a former Aston Martin sheet metal worker and WOW what an experience and this mans skill was going to be lost in a couple of years as he was about to retire, I so so much wished I had the time to learn from him, the amazing skills he had as a "Craftsman". He used nothing more than a Tape measure a piece of Dress makers chalk & calliper's to maintain an even thickness of the material aviation grade Aluminium as he Wheeled the 10 x 6 foot panel for a Boeing 757 what an amazing tradesman the Chap was. These skills are not being taught any more as we tend to sue Composite material's now and skin panels are pressed out on a huge jig after the are cut on a CNC Laser cutter

Hi Craig, That sounds like a wonderful experience, and you're dead right, skills like that are priceless and a shame when they arent passed on.. i guess in the end it's assumed that technology will render those skills pointless in the future, but as the classic car and restoration world cries out for skilled hands.. maybe there is hope... Thanks for sharing that buddy.. have a good weekend.. Del.

Del, Congrats on the English Wheel purchase. You will have a lot of fun with it. So a great Teacher of the English wheel is Lazze I told a week-long class with him last year and I learned so much more. But Lazze has a KZbin channel with a lot of instruction on the English wheel, even a motorcycle fender segment. I think you will enjoy it. If I can make some suggestion on your English wheel. One the large wheel check it for being true on your lathe along with the smaller profile wheels. Check to see if each profile crown is centered on each smaller wheel. Second center your large wheel with shims you don't want that wheel to travel back and forth on the bearing shaft. Third, if you can get some plastic or Teflon thin gauge sheets and center the anvil shaft so that it is somewhat tight and doesn't have any play that you can eliminate that set screw handle and only use that lower T handle for up and down adjustments. Also note, you want that upper and lower wheels centered on each other. So those set adjustment Allen bolts on anvil holder for setting the lever on your small wheel shafts get some lock nuts and lock them in place. I have more suggestion but I will stop. But one last one, get a piece of an inner tube and cut it to fit over your large wheel and watch Lazzes videos he calls it a rubber band. Anyway enjoy Always a pleasure Take Care

Good to see your having fun with it! Aluminum is much friendlier to work. However watch the grain. Like wood Alu has a grain. Working across the grain gives nice results even with tight curves. Going with the grain it can and will crack if, turned to tightly. Oh BTW it can and WILL wrinkle. ( My best action with a wheel). Have fun and don't get bit! You will master this quickly as you have the proper attitude with it. I noticed some one mentioned Bismuth in the comments: It will work, although expensive. Just get the smallest size (highest #) #8 or #9 for the smoothest results. Any size will work better than sand.

I've used a wheel a fair bit so may I offer some tips, 1. on this particular wheel, make sure that the anvil is aligned with the roller, not just parallel faces, but vertical alignment and parallel alignment of the axis of both wheels. If the alignment is out, it will never work properly. 2. Always keep the wheel faces oiled, wd40 is fine, but wipe off before use otherwise you will mark the work. 3. You mentioned about making a mudguard, but doing it in two passes. The wheel will always give you a compound curve, how much, depends on the shape of the anvil, the pressure of the anvil and the material being used, so you can do it in one pass, adjusting your direction depending on where you want the shape to be. The wheel works by stretching the metal in two directions, the main direction along the axis of the anvil and the other at right angles to the axes, but I think you have seen that already. 4. Never put too much pressure on the anvil to try to speed up the work. All that will happen is that the work will be marked and the material will be overstretched. 5. You can use the wheel to smooth hammering, but bear in mind that you will be stretching the material even more and it may distort from the desired shape. Hope this helps
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for all that kind and generous help and insight Phil. many of the things you say make sense already.. the WD40 thing will help, it's a great lubricant for machining alluminium on a lathe, so should help to prevent marks in the work..... im loading up the first practice effort in a minute or two... i hope you don't laugh too much.. thanks again, and take care.. Del.

Thanks Paul, sure thing, it was indeed!... kind of ironic aye? Not only that, but it's actually not called an English Wheel in England, usually just called a Wheel and apprantly (?) was invented in France, so work that one out lol... have a great week, ride safe, D&Px

I’ll be amazed if you’re not but just in case, check out his videos. What that guy does with Aluminium and motorbikes is quite unbelievable. Keep up the good work mate 👍🏼 Cheers, Paul.

I use a wheel or wheels that are nearly a 100 years old. Every day These flex like hell have no possative force and the rollers are machined badly. The wheels need to be machine oils and wrapped in rag or will tarnish. Put the wheels in a lathe set a dyle gauge up and make sure there even radius on the dyes. Don't force work through it let the tool do the work if your doing a big radius it should be beaten by hand over a shot bag and then rolled out. Divide all your work into squairs and it will help you gauge your work. you will need to learn how to make tucks and get your self a shrinker stretcher next. Trust me

Get a tree stump carve tear drop in it top n bottom one 2" deep one side 1"the other way better for beating a radius out.

Get rid of the slop in that bottom roller and stop locking it off right now.... extend the bar down and control it with your foot. Your stood to close. I could literly write you a book on it. And slow the hell down man...... a wheel is a tool on rythem and chill out. If you want to make a fender it's not made from a sheet like this in any way...... Ide be happy to show you how you make them
