You're right, the oxidation is a lack of prep at the factory however if you use dissimilar metals (steel brush wheel) to clean the aluminum to clean/prep the material, it will merely oxidize again eventually. I went through this extensively with oxidation on one of my new vehicles and ultimately all 4 doors needed replacement as a result. Not saying the repair isn't an improvement over what it was, but it will more likely than not happen once more. Another thing that you might want to consider is the use of thread sealant on all the bolts that go into the housing to separate the dissimilar bolt material from the housing. That is another cause of this condition. Cheers, have a great weekend.

Noice. Looking gorgeous... the bike and you of course lol Youve got the same thing as I have on all 3 of my xj900s diversions. It must be a shaft drive / final drive thing. On one of the bikes, I removed the whole swing arm, took the final drive off, paint stripped the whole thing in 2 pieces, Back to base metal on the final drive, then cleaned, acetoned, acid etch primer, then a grey over that, 5 or 6 good coats. 7 years later, "rust" spots in the same place. Swing arm still good, apart from the 2 drain holes on the inside of the swing arm. Currently have that swing arm off the bike (Olaf) and doing the same job again, full strip, clean, acetone, acid etch primer, then in black not grey, grey showed up the dirt way too much lol have a good one.
@tommylitchfield34505 күн бұрын
Maybe you should try Glyptal paint on the inside of the drive housing, or POR 15 style engine enamel to seal the pores in the housing. High-end engine builders use this type paint on the inside of their engines to aid in oil drain-back speed. Perhaps the gear housing casting is porous and the gear oil is "releasing" the paint from the inside, since it is flaking off in the same spots repeatedly. Couldn't hurt to try. Good deal, using the acid etch primer on the aluminum.

The new flag looks great! Freedom is not free....As for the factory paint on the gear housing, my guess would be that the gear housing was sourced from a different supplier with a paint department with contamination issues. Probably not properly degreased. Even with a proper acid etching primer, paint ain't gonna stick long-term to aluMINium if there is contamination under the paint. With the good prep work here, hopefully this Trumpet will have a nice rear end for many moons

@@Moonfleet41 Very true about the Harley fenders/mudguards. I used body filler in the seams of mine where the edges are rolled, because those rolled seams are water magnets. A little filler and there's nowhere for water and road grime to accumulate. Enjoy the weekend, you two :)

@Moonfleet415 күн бұрын
Hi Frank, no not really, the metal is a pretty thick casting and the corrosion is only on the outside surface and once I got it ground off and sanded back, there wasn't even any deep pitting in the metal... basically it just blew the coating off and festered away under the surface!

I'm wondering if there's a difference between the rattle-can paints in the UK and America. I can NEVER get a rattle-can finish to come out as well as what you get (and believe me, I wish I could). I'm diligent about surface preparation and cleaning, but if I want a good finish I almost always have to rev-up my airbrush. I haven't found a rattle-can brand of paint yet that doesn't spit and create bubbles in the finish when you least want it to (and it's infuriating). I seem to have the same issues with Duracoat as well. If I use the Duracoat aerosol it comes out like crap, but if I shoot it with my airbrush, it comes out great. It must have something to do with the evil bastards at the EPA (EnvironMENTAL Protection Agency), and their draconian policies regarding paint formulas for aerosol applications 🤔
@Moonfleet415 күн бұрын
Not sure Paul, I always seem to get on really well with aerosol cans, but I've been doing it for a lifetime and it is certainly harder to get a good finish than it is with a spray gun... this product is a thick stone chip paint and it does float out quite well as long as you get the temperature right... I know it's not available in the US, but perhaps a stone chip paint from the Rustoleum range would offer you the same properties?!
@tommylitchfield34505 күн бұрын
Krylon is by far the best aerosol paint in "Merica, IMHO. Everybody here loves Rustoleum, but Krylon lays it down FAR smoother. Give it a try, if you haven't already. It's a few cents cheaper, too :)

How do chose between stripping paint manually or with paint remover?
@Moonfleet416 күн бұрын
The problem with paint remover is that the tiniest residue left behind will trash the new paint, even invisible traces of paint stripper will ruin all your hard work, been there too many times, so I far prefer ripping it off manually!
