Seeburg 1954 playing Moonglow and Theme from Picnic by Morris Stoloff from the 1956 Movie Picnic. This is the extended version from the sound track album. This version is just slightly different in blending the piano and violins. When beginning the Picnic theme in the middle of the song, the piano is more pronounced, the violins begin more softly , and is just a tad longer. This is not the version played on the radio or offered as a 45 single.

Those two themes juxtaposed, are so moving. They remind me of the time when anything seemed possible. It wasn't. It was the perfect music for an early summer in a life.

when I listen to Moonglow. I think of that movie and beautiful Kim Novak and that gorgeous wonderful William Holden. what a great movie and Kim and Bill together were mesmerizing. Loved that movie. That theme song and those two GREAT ACTORS Kim and Bill. WOW they were so good and I think about William Holden a lot. He was a great actor and so handsome

@@emilyhayek1132 I've idolized William Holden for years. I'm no movie star but, like William, i too suffer from chronic depression and shyness. Also like William, i too tried "self medicating". He hid his alcoholism so long, i finally took a toll on that extremely handsome face.

I have always liked this theme, although I was too young to see the motion picture. I saw it much later here in You Tube. And the film is good, and the theme very appropriate to it

I feel so privileged to have lived through this period. One of my earliest recollections of hearing music I liked was Les Paul and Mary Ford''s How High The Moon, and the first record I bought was That'll Be The Day. This has always been one of my favourite "Big Band" sounds, and I never tire of hearing it.

Thanks for uploading this - I can hear the subtle differences when compared to the 45/78 single release. The guitar chords on this were a great inspiration to me as an impressionable youngster, and the Holden/Novak sequence from the film blended brilliantly with the music. Fond memories of those times.

The pianist is Stan Wrightsman - guitar is the great George Van Epps - drum is Nick Fatool and bass is Morty Corb. Those guys recorded often with Paul Weston, Bob Crosby, Matty Matlock, Red Nichols and even on a dixieland album with Pete Fountain and Lawrence Welk!

Don't stop here. Take KZbin to the Benny Goodman version of 'Moonglow' and the Billie Holiday vocal version. Stoloff was the music director for Columbia and got the Oscar for his great arrangement (strings!) of the 'Picnic medley'. But what we heard on the radio and bought was the shorter Decca 45rpm record of the medley... and Duning's (the composer) own "Theme for Picnic' on the flipside! I was 12 years-old. The romantic music was and is more touching than the movie which was pretty darn good. ANOTHER lush strings record scored big later in the same summer: Hugo Winterhalter's 'Canadian Sunset'.

Morty Corb on bass...without him on bass this would just be a good nice song. The planets just happened to be All Lined Up and put him on Bass and his bass playing made the song that Change the World. Put on Headphones and listen to his Bass playing up and down the scale....listen how his bass runs comes out the 2nd & 3rd String segment, Nobody Else could've......so musical, so natural God gifted bass player, the right person at the right place...won't ever be duplicated.

On this day in 1956 {May 5th} "Picnic" by the McGuire Sisters entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #13 and spent 20 weeks on the Top 100... Also in 1956 Morris Stoloff's instrumental version reached #1 {for 3 weeks} on June 2nd on Billboard's Most Played by Jockeys chart {the song it knocked out of the top spot was Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel"}... R.I.P. Mr. Stoloff {1898 - 1980}, Dorothy McGuire {1928 - 2012}, and to The King {1935 - 1977}...

Lynnie: I listened to the Donna Reed Show - that arrangement was written for the show - it had nothing to do with the movie soundtrack - YES, you DID hear Vibes. Van Alexander was in charge of music for many shows - but he often "farmed out" the arranging to other arrangers such as Heinie Beau, Billy May and others. I talked to Van on the phone years ago about some of his TV arranging. The BEST version of Moonglow & Picnic on a record (with vibes!) is by the Clebanoff Strings. It's on KZbin

Will you do me a favor? Go to the Threes a Family clip of the Donna Reed Show. Around 14:42, Mary and boyfriend are dancing to this tune. I swear I hear a Vibe in there. I have looked everywhere for this sound in a bunch of recordings and can't find it. Is it my imagination? Or do you know who the artist is? The music credit for the whole production of Donna Reed Show goes to Van Alexander. But I haven't found Moonglow amongst his recordings. Thanks for listening!
