I could've used a lot less Space. The novel which came out in 1955 has a much more believable if very melodramatic plot about an English traitor/Nazi building a nuclear missile aimed at London. Bond vs. Darth Vader is going too far.

When the lady in the credits turns into Superman, it’s because Moonraker was in post-production when Superman The Movie won the Oscar for Visual Effects. She turns into Superman just as the credit for Derek Meddings and his visual effects team came on screen, and they’d done Superman.

Hi Roly. Actually, "For Your Eyes Only" WAS going to be the next film...then "Star Wars" came out and Albert R Brocoli changed his mind and they did "Moonraker" instead! It payed off well as "Moonraker" became the biggest box office success of the Bond films to that point.

Moonraker gets a lot of grief. Yes it's very silly but it's also huge fun. Plus all the money is up on the screen with gorgeous locations, glorious huge Ken Adam sets and terrific visual effects. Plus one of the very best scores courtesy of John Barry with 'Flight into Space' my favourite piece of Bond music. Oh and Q's line 'I think he's attempting re-entry sir' one of the greatest gags. Love it.

My favorite Bond movie of all time. Sure Moonraker (1979) is silly, but it's creative and just as fun. You can't be super serious all the time. Fun Fact: The only time Bond fires a gun in this movie is when he shoots the sniper out of the tree with Drax's (Michael Lonsdale) shotgun. Bonus Fact: For the shot of Drax being ejected into space, a camera was placed on the floor (looking upward) and Michael Lonsdale was pulled fifty meters (one hundred sixty-four feet) up into the air by a cable. Bonus Fact: To build the gigantic three-level Space Station set interiors at France's Epinay Studios, the production utilized two tons of nails, 100 tons of metal, 220 technicians, and 10,000 feet of set construction woodwork.

There are three scenes in this one that borrow musical cues from other films: 1. Horn fanfare when Bond arrives at the pheasant hunt (2001: A Space Odyssey) 2. Keypad code to enter the lab in Venice (alien melody from Close Encounters of the Third Kind) 3. Bond on horseback following the ambulance fight (theme from The Magnificent Seven) This continues the same gag of using other people's music in The Spy Who Loved Me: 1. Anya's music box (theme from Dr. Zhiavago) 2. Bond and Anya walking in the desert (theme from Lawrence of Arabia)

I've always liked the plotting of this one and how Bond actually does some investigating, where he goes to a place and learns a piece of the puzzle, which leads him to another place and another piece, which leads him to another place etc.

Great review! Love Moonraker. It's filled with fun and kind of like a Road Runner/Coyote cartoon with Jaws as the Coyote--you just can't kill him off! TRIVIA: Lewis Gilbert said that after The Spy Who Loved me he got tons of fan mail that said 'My kid loved Jaws--why can't you make him a good guy?' so the character was changed. TRIVIA 2: Jaws' girlfriend was originally supposed to be as large as him but Richard Kiel said no--it'd be more amusing if she was way smaller. And he was right!

This was the first Bond movie I ever saw. I was 8. I still love it, it's one of my favorite Bond's. I think they did a good job getting him into space. The laser's might be a bit much for 1979 but shuttles were a thing and we'd been into space. Holly is still one of my most favorite Bond girls. I used to think the same of Hugo Drax but he does have some great one liners, "Take care of Mr. Bond. See that some harm comes to him."

In filmmaking, the idea is that you are not supposed to be aware that a camera is there and/or moving. The camera movements are not supposed to stand out, because that can take one out of the movie. That is not to say that having dynamic camera work is wrong or that breaking the rule won't lead to good results. But overall, Moonraker "shows" with the camera so it was doing what it is supposed to be doing. So you may be nitpicking. However, if you are noticing that the static or "boring" camera work is not effective, then you may also have a point as per the original rule.

This is Bernard Lee's final appearance as M before his untimely death. Moonraker was my first and favourite Bond movie it's one of those that jumped the shark into Star Wars territory and the laser guns I love it. Jaws is one of my favourite henchman along with Oddjob. I don't know what they were watching but I don't think this movie drag at all I felt they got straight into it.

22:28 - I mean, you say that, but remember Kananga from 'Live And Let Die' and how he got ballooned to death. Honestly I've never understood the bad reputation this film has. People often refer to it as one of the worst Bond movies, and while I won't defend the whole 'going into space' bit... it's still done decently well, with solid effects and cool sets. I describe this movie the way I describe a lot of the Bond films, if you can just ignore the REALLY stupid bits, it's actually a great film. It's a shame this one gets overlooked so much as 'one of the bad ones', since it has some of the best stuff in any of the films. Drax, while hardly an original villain (his plan is literally the same as Stromberg's), he's played by a great actor with a really intimidating performance. Plus, the forest scene with the dogs, the stunt-work, the fight scenes, even the outer-space special effects for zero gravity and such. They were told 'put James Bond in space', and they decided to do it as best as they possibly could. Continuing from what I said on the previous movie: yeah, Jaws is back. As said then, the director's kid thought Jaws was a really cool villain and wanted him to come back for this movie. Not only that, but they decided to make him a hero in the end, which I always really liked. Jaws is easily one of the most memorable Bond characters, it was cool that he got to be both a villain AND a hero in the same movie. Sadly he never came back to the franchise after this film, but he lived on in video-games and fan projects alike.

I agree with all you said, though I’ll attempt to defend the space part. I’ve always thought of it this way: what could be a bigger adventure than Bond in space? It’s not like the films have not laid the groundwork for things happening in space or with astronauts, even a villain with a launching/returning capture rocket from a volcano lair. But now Bond finding his way to a shuttle and space station years later is too silly? Nah… 😁

You should also check out the "unofficial" James Bond movie called "Never Say Never Again"(1983). It's Sean Connery's true final performance as James Bond. It also came out the same year that Roger Moore's Bond film "Octopussy" released. But seeing how much you liked Sean as Bond, I think you'll enjoy his actual final Bond performance. So you should definitely check it out as part of your Bond Marathon.

I’ve always loved this film. I rewatched it after Sir Roger Moore recently passed away. My only complaint is it’s basically the same plot as The Spy Who Loved Me. As awesome as Jaws is that he’s in both doesn’t help. My regret is there was a sense at the time this film came out that space travel was about to become safe and routine with the shuttle. It was going to be the DC-3 of space. The plane that made air travel safe and affordable. Even before Challenger exploded it was becoming obvious it was too expensive and too high maintenance. The main engines needed so much work after flights it might have been cheaper to throw them away. Ironically Artemis now will use the shuttle main engines NASA has in storage and will throw them away. So we never got to live in this world. We never even got to see a shuttle launch from Vandenberg. Space access was never this convenient . . . or do we finally 40 years later live in this world now after all? “That’s Musk in Dragon 5.”

In Ian Fleming's Moonraker novel, Bond finds out that ex-Nazi Hugo Drax wants to blow up England with an ICBM. The 1979 Moonraker movie cashed in on the sci-fi craze of the late 1970's. Science fiction was box office poison in the early 1970's.

Everyone has a "first Bond"; he takes all our virginity at some point; "Moonraker" is mine. PERFECT for an 11-year-old kid who had outgrown the comics heroes (and who was entering puberty, heh). The only real critique of the movie is that, yes you're right, it SHOULD be in space more. I don't care too much about all the references to older Bond movies and to the rest of pop culture. Yeah, it's a legit criticism to suggest that the first four Bond films were trendsetters; all that came after were trend followers. Is this really important though? Certainly not to almost all fans of the franchise. The genius John Barry responsible for the score, by the way. Finally: for such a fun and even jokey movie, that woman getting run down by dogs might be the darkest scene in all of Bond, including the Craig Era.

the spy who loved me and for your eyes only are definitely the best 2 roger moore films, but moonraker is a better parody than casino royale 67 and almost as good of a parody as austin powers. it's also arguably the best starting bond film for pre-teens who are like "I want to watch a cool movie but i saw back to the future 10 times already." also drax is definitely a top 10 bond villain. world wide eugenics-based terror plot in space, actually tries to kill bond with a gun, kills a bond girl by sending his psychopath dogs after her, hires jaws, actually waits in a room just to gloat at bond once he realizes what happened to his scientists. and everything he says is dry wit and bored "so over humans" tone.

This isn't one of my favourite James Bond films, I prefer The Spy who Loved Me but I do love the first act. I think the centrifuge scene is one of the best Bond in danger moments and the scene where Corinne is chased down and devoured by the dogs feels so uncharacteristic in the franchise. It's a scene that feels as if it belongs in a horror movie and totally a million miles away from the goofy tone of the rest of the film. I do love the space battle though. It's a highlight of the movie for me and it is very well done. For Your Eyes Only is another favourite for a lot of Bond fans who have read the Fleming novels. Not revealing anything about it but I'd be really interested to discover what you think of that one.

You can take a break from Roger Moore after For your Eyes Only which is excellent with Bill Conti score...there is the 1983 "Battle of the Bonds" and its Sean Connery with "Never Say Never Again" and Roger Moore ..same year with "Octopussy". NSNA is a remake of Thunderball..there was a 20 plus year lawsuit that wasn't cleared til Daniel Craig for use of SPECTRE and thats why no SPECTRE in Roger Moore films they had to invent the plots.... And another lawsuit cleared for "Casino Royale" at the end of Pierce Brosnan run.

the music got good when John Barry took over. Most of the Bond love interests have sexual double entendre names. The original Moonraker novel had nothing to do with space (it was v2 rockets). After Star Wars and Close Encounters everyone was jumping on the space bandwagon.

Moonraker is somewhat divisive, with some fans considering it a classic and others considering it an embarrassment. It is . . . uh . . . vaguely inspired by the Ian Fleming novel of the same name, which happens to be one of the best Bond books. Needless to say, Bond never goes to space in the novel Moonraker, and this film is about as far as the films ever venture from the tone or (relative) realism of the source material. But the film has its own wacky charms, and the effects are quite impressive. Plus, no other Bond flick feels more tailor-made for Roger Moore's comedic version of 007.

Moonraker was the peak of James Bond, for almost 20 years he was the number one movie hero. Then in 1981 For Your Eyes Only put James Bond in the back seat as Raiders of the Lost Ark made Indiana Jones the number one movie hero. There were so many cool action heroes in the 80s, (Snake Plisskin, Rambo, Mad Max, John McClane, Martin Riggs, Han Solo) Bond became very boring. I like Moonraker now, but back then my friends and I didn't like it. We were getting tried of everything milking Star Wars, and Han Solo was cooler than Bond. To be a kid back in the late 70s was to really understand the impact of Star Wars.

In my opinion this is the worst James Bond film with Roger Moore. And there's nothing original. It's mish-mash of Connery Bonds and more. The music since boat chase: From Russia With Love. Bond trapped in simulator - bond trapped inside machine in "Thunderball". Space fight - scuba fight in "Thunderball". Space civilisation plan of Villain - underwater civilisation plan of vilain i "The Spy Who Loved Me". "He had to fly" = "Playing his golden harf" ("Goldfinger"). Jaws and the girl lived - there's radio voice that tells that Jaws and the girl were saved. Movie has almost nothing to do with the novel except Bond, name of Drax and the name of Moonraker. In the book Drax is SPECTRE agent and Moonraker is an atomic water missile and he wants to attack Great Britain in an act of revenge. Bond was sent to win with Drax in a Bacarat game so Drax will loose his founds. There's nothing about space travel (the book was writen in 1955). Louis Gilbert's first Bond film was "You Only Live Twice".

Minor correction: Drax was a former Nazi, not a SPECTRE agent. (SPECTRE wasn't introduced until the novel Thunderball.) And the film kept that idea in some sense, as the cinematic Drax really seems to like the idea of creating his own Master Race in space.
