Another Bond another fun time! A more down to earth Bond film sandwiched between to crazier titles and I don't mind! It was like a nice breath of fresh air after two giant films and even though this one is not as extravagant, it still has its epic moments (that rock climbing sequence and skiing sequence are so cool). Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

The mountaintop monastery is real, and you can go there. It’s called the Monastery Of The Holy Trinity and it’s in the Meteora area of central Greece. It’s a compound of 24 large buildings over 400 meters up from the valley below. You can find lots of videos about it on KZbin as well as information online.

As LoadingReadyRun put it, it's "legally distinct Blofeld" to send a message to Kevin McClory. EON productions isn't allowed to use the name Blofeld or SPECTRE at this time, so they put "legally distinct Blofeld" on the screen and killed him. Also, no M this film. the actor (Bernard Lee) was not well, and died shortly after.

Bernard Lee (M) was diagnosed with cancer while filming Moonraker and passed before filming started on For Your Eyes Only. Legal issues stemming from Thunderball prevented the use of Spectre and Blofeld. You should Google thevlegal issues as it is kind of interesting how it all went down and was finally settled. These issues also include the non-EON bond film Never Say Never Again which is basically a remake of Thunderball.

This film is the Roger Moore entry that feels the most like an Ian Fleming Bond story. It combines two short stories from the book of the same name (along with an unadapted scene from the book Live and Let Die), and it tries to get things grounded again after the venture into outright science fiction last time. And I love that General Gogol of the KGB, an ally in The Spy Who Loved Me, is now one of the villains. It's my personal favorite of the Moore era.

23-year-old stuntman Paolo Rigoni died during the filming of the bobsled chase. This was due to a poorly designed track. Rigoni was not the only one to lose his life there. During an actual competition another bobsledder was killed at the same exact spot.

Bernard Lee died before his scenes for this movie were filmed, so out of respect the role wasn’t immediately recast and his lines given to Chief of Staff Bill Tanner instead. M will be back in the next movie, played by Robert Brown who had a small role as Admiral Hargreaves in „Spy who loved me“

@28:10 Kristatos' St. Cyrils hideout is Agia Triada Monastery, Meteora, Greece Only Bond movie to date in the official franchise not to feature M. It was the first Bond movie not to feature Bernard Lee as M, who had played the role in the previous eleven movies in the franchise. Lee died of stomach cancer on January 16, 1981, after the filming of this movie had started, but before his scenes were shot. Although Bernard Lee was dying of stomach cancer, he did try to film at least one scene in the movie, but in the end, it was too much for him, and he had to bow out. He died not long afterward. As a result, Q's role in this movie was slightly expanded to fill the gap. As such, several scenes, originally intended to include M, were re-written with Q, (for example, the confessional scene). As a mark of respect, producer Albert R. Broccoli refused to re-cast the role, changing the script to say that M was on leave.

For Your Eyes Only is a favorite of mine, mostly because I'm a fan of the original novels and short stories by Ian Fleming, and it's one of the few Roger Moore films in which he plays Bond more like the character from the books, darker and more ruthless. The part where he kicks the car off the cliff is frankly chilling coming from the usually more lighthearted Moore, which is an exciting moment for me.

The legal issues around Bloefeld and Spectre plagued EON productions through the70s and 80s. It's a long story. The opening sequence was their way of giving Bloefeld a send off. Basically, Ian Fleming worked on a TV project with some other people and when it fell through he turned it into his novel Thunderball which actually was the novel that introduced Spectre and Bloefeld. Those concepts got used in earlier films though. Anyway, the guy that had the main issue (Kevin McClory) produced Thunderball with EON and got the rights to remake it after a certain point. For years he tried to stretch that into the rights to a series of water themed Bond films. So that's why SPECTRE disappeared from the main Bond Series in the 70s until the issues were resolved post 2000.

Topol who only recently passed away was famous for his role in Fiddler on the Roof at the time. Another film you may want to react to. Besides the under rated Flash Gordon he had a significant role in the ABC Television miniseries Winds of War along with the sequel War and Remembrance. Historical fiction was popular at the time. They are very long but Herman Wouk’s novels they are based on are good. They feel real and have so much every day life among the war added. Might be far too long for you to react to though.

I think the reason this one polls so high even though it doesn't have the "defeat evil villain lair to save humanity" final act, is that it keeps the plot and pacing consistent throughout and always has a bit of "detective spy" level of incomplete knowledge and also rando henchmen behind every bush. the stakes are still "crazy person can nuke the world" but the resolution only depends on capturing the macguffin instead of defeating the villain. also there are a ton of popcorn movie moments, like dropping blofeld, introducing melena's car, kicking the car off the edge for luigi's revenge, german dude tossing a dirt bike at bond, the cliff drop stunt, and the general locations of southern europe with a few alpine spots thrown in. it's not as personal as man with a golden gun, but it's definitely in-line with written bond material other than moore doing his characteristic smirks and "eye roll blinks."

After the excesses of Moonraker there really wasn't anywhere for them to go that wouldn't seem ridiculous so with For Your Eyes Only they made a deliberate attempt to dial it down and so returned to following the Fleming source material far more closely. This is actually the closest they have come to adapting an original Ian Fleming story since On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The film is based on two Fleming short stories; For Your Eyes Only and Risico and the two stories are spliced together in the screenplay seamlessly with actual scenes being perfectly recreated on screen. The director John Glen is actually a Bond veteran. He has been an editor and second unit director on the series since On Her Majesty's Secret Service. This was his debut at fully directing a Bond movie and he particularly wanted to ground the series again and move it away from the fantastic plots and characters that were prevalent in the 1970's. He would go on to direct every single Bond movie throughout the 80's and is actually the only director to have a consistent run of directing James Bond films through an entire decade. This is my favourite Roger Moore Bond film, mainly because of Moore's more mature performance. He's also a little darker and more ruthless, much closer to Fleming's character. My favourite scene is where he coldly kicks the car off the edge of the cliff. I also love the fact that this film follows the source material so closely. That's always a big plus for me with a Bond film. My absolute favourite Moore movies are For Your Eyes Only, The Spy Who Loved Me, Live and Let Die and Octopussy in that order.

This is the most serious Roger Moore Bond. Richard Kiel was supposed to come back as Jaws but he wanted to much money so his character was cut of from the script. Bernard Lee didn't come back as M, because he died before they started filming "For Your Eyes Only". "PZL Świdnik" is an aviation factory in Poland (Świdnik is the name of the city). Since the communism in Poland it was producing helicopters for USSR.

There are so many great things in this movie: The best piano sting in the history of all moviedom (at the ski jump) Two of the low-key best henchmen of them all (Charles Dance’s character and Apostis). Even Erik Kriegler is pretty good. A quality Bond girl in Carole Bouquet. The 2CV chase The ski chase The rock climbing The genuinely scary and disturbing bit of the screaming electrocuted man in the sinking ship Bond kicking Locque’s car off the cliff. Who is the villain? And some cheesy silliness that you either love or hate: Q branch and the identigraph. The Blofeld stuff The Bibi stuff ATAC to St Cyril’s The score (personally love it, but I get it if people don’t) And there is the really bad stuff: Bond running up the stairs Chekhov’s scuba tank Margaret and Dennis. But I love this film, unreservedly.

I haven’t seen this movie in a long time and even with just sporadic clips, the action was awesome. That ski chase is legendary in Bond Movies. I don’t know what Ollie is thinking with his criticism of the photography. The action was tight and fast paced. Director John Glen was a longtime second unit director and even editor of Bond movies (and would direct all five movies in the 80s). Here’s my theory as to why the action seems dull: Roger Moore is not an athletic guy (compared to Daniel Craig lol) so all the fight scenes with him will appear slow and static. Btw (I think) the rock climbing stunt was done by Rick Sylvester who also did the ski jump in the opening of The Spy Who Loved Me.

Blofeld is shown with a neckbrace and wheelchair, which is a call back to On Her Majesty's Secret Service where he broke his neck following his fight with Bond. The reference to Bond's wife in For Your Eyes Only indicates that the killing of Blofeld in the factory chimney is an act of revenge for Teresa's death. Blofeld's name and SPECTRE are not specifically mentioned in this film as there was some legal wrangling at the time over the use of the character.

"M" Bernard Lee died right before this film was shot...Blofeld was an F you to the folks that have been suing them since the 60's. They wrapped up the revenge storyline from On Her Majesty's Service which John Glen was an editor on. Michael J. Lewis is an absolutely excellent underrated movie composer..rarely known. Also for Bond films by this point there are 2nd unit directors which means a different director that exclusively handles most of the action stuff. Great review. Julian Glover was the villain from Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade who turned into a skeleton at the end.

This was meant to be Roger Moore's final outing as James Bond because in the next installment Octopussy had originally James Brolin cast in the role. If you see screen tests of the Actor the reason why It Never went as planned. They were so close Brolin was going to prepare himself. But then he was prevented from playing The role by Albert R. Broccoli and Roger Moore was asked to return. Because there's an unofficial James Bond film called Never Say Never Again featuring Sean Connery. There was this head to head thing called The Battle of The Bonds. Roger Moore was asked to return so that he can complete with Sean Connery.

For Your Eyes Only was a high point in terms of the Roger Moore era. Sure some of the characters from the very start/ early era such as who played M by that point were changed (Bernard Lee the very accomplished actor who played M literally from start of the franchise died in 1981 the year when this was released and so Moonraker was his last), but For Your Eyes Only gave a much more even balance of Moore's signature traits of lightweight humour as Bond together with some really gritty tough moments. And without doubt its music really helped to amplify the action sequences even more.

Just a few random thoughts: I like this cool Conti score, but to me it sounds almost jarringly 70’s, not 80’s, and calls a bit too much attention to itself at times. Also, I do not mind a more grounded or small scale Bond adventure, my only quibble being how random and coincidental a number of scenes are here, with 007 only surviving because of someone else. Makes you wonder how he made it this far! And finally, I’m kind of disappointed you didn’t recognize/comment on General Veers, considering the poster on your wall. 😉

This is definitely a low-key, gritty Bond film. Was trying to bring Bond "back down to Earth" (or basics, after two epic movies). The producers were trying to go for the feel of past movies like "From Russia, With Love" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Fun Fact if you don't know yet: The Countless Lisl, who was murdered by Locque the henchman in the middle of the film, was played by Cassandra Harris. She was, at the time of filming, married to future Bond, Pierce Brosnan. Brosnan became a widower when Cassandra passed away from cancer in 1991.

One of my favorite 007 movies. So many great stunts, an unusually capable Bond Girl, and a nice reprise of the bobsled run chase scene from OHMSS, another tie-in to that movie along with the cemetery scene. Lynn Holly Johnson was a hoot! As for the combat scenes lacking scale, that makes them more believable. The space laser battle in Moonraker was just silly. One major disappointment, however. When they used an oxygen-helium mix in the deep diving rigs I was looking forward to hearing Bond sound like a chipmunk. But they didn't do it! What a missed comedic opportunity.

Carole Bouquet is one of the smarter Bond girls. The villain may be TOO understated, though.
