I also enjoy Bondi, with his magnet. This is viceral, so into it, some of us recall using some of these products. The Watkins man brought most of those bottles straight to our doors. We spent time in the kitchen with Mom when he was there. She bought peppermint flavouring from him and made mint chocolates with With peppermint cream centers. During rationing that was the coolest thing a Mom could do.

no, the mason jar was aqua.. yeah i know, its so hard to get a good shot of the color of some of these bottles when we pull them out.. they start to do this thing where they are rainbow colored right after we pull them out.. and some of the colors of these bottles are just sooo pretty.. the camera does not do it justice.. but yeah that jar was just dirty, and probably had some contents still inside. thanks for watching, glad you like the videos!

I think Your channel holds my attention so well because it crosses several interests. Exploration, Historical, Antiques, Research. Im left with one question though, what do you do with the findings? From what I’ve seen so far you’d have to have a warehouse to store so many things. How much trouble do landowner’s give you in your requests? You’re a true genius of a researcher and I’m impressed!

ah well thank you! no we do not currently but we have been getting a ton of requests for bottles so we are considering doing that.. we unfortunately havent been keeping most of the bottles we find, we tend to give them to the home owner or the historic society in the area. but we are always trying to make sure they go to a place where they arent going to be destroyed or thrown away.. so i have no problems with selling them to collectors.. i will probably begin saving some of the better bottles from each pit, and then maybe in the winter when we have a little more time on our hands, we can get around to making a website.. we will definitely mention it in future videos when we get to that point. thanks for watching, enjoy the channel!

I enjoy your work very much! Insightful. I do have a challenge reading the tiny font you have on the top of the screen, showing the history of the items you find & collect. The font that you post on the bottom right side of the screen is a little bit better but not by much. If it is increased a little bit more, it doesn’t seem that it would cover up the activity you are doing while the words are being displayed. Isn’t it exciting to find buried history! The Great Plains, in the early settlement times, leaves not much behind. I’m shocked to see huge estate buildings replaced by farm fields but that’s Life. Thanks!

umm.. well tom knows that for sure, but i do believe this is the website.. www.oldwestbottles.com/probes.php they sell a bunch of lengths of probe rods, but ive never ordered or measured one myself.. but i think we use the 4 foot rod, but it may be the 3 foot rod.. idk three feet seems a little short, and i know the probe comes up to my chest.. and i know some of the pits can be kinda low down, so id just go with the 4 footer. good luck out there! if you have any further questions just message me in a new comment (instead of hitting reply, it doesnt notify me when someone replies to my reply).. and if i dont respond, just leave me a new comment.. sometimes the comments roll in so fast that i just cant keep up and othertimes its super slow. thanks for watching

haha umm.. like the hole itself or the location? we find the location by doing historic research.. we use those old maps that it shows zoom in in the beginning of our videos.. and we find the holes by probing.. we have these T shaped rods that we push into the ground.. if you watch a few of our videos you will see what we mean.. we dont usually show how we find them, because its actually really boring and tedious to push these rods in a back yard for an afternoon.. but basically we can feel the ash in the ground that they used to top the pits off to help with decomposing the pit.. hope that ansewered your question! be sure to follow us on facebook, its just "below the plains" ..thanks for watching!

I have a cistern just off the back corner of my house a dog found for me probably 40 years ago. I open the top up it's brick on top full of glass and cans which I closed back up I need to empty out someday and fill with dirt.

Doing research of embossed and slick ketchups - and knowing the maker's marks (or those 8-sided and numbered Heinz bottles) their glass manufacturer, location, and dates of production can also be found out. Especially the blown in mold, kiln tooled lips and earliest of screw tops. If you find those Heinz with number on base, they can provide further information - like those olive jars (if Heinz).

oh yeah. sometimes when we record, we dont get a good enough shot of the bottle to be able to tell exactly what it was that we pulled out, bc we keep probably under 5% of the stuff we find, and to be completely honest, the stuff from the 30s is not my area of expertise.. but im always glad to hear new ways to identify what im looking at, so thanks for letting us know and thanks for watching!

@@laurelshugars2866 What makes the whole study of ketchup/catsup bottles is that 1915 there were over 800 (admitted and documented) single ketchup product manufacturers ... and food packing plant producers - of which that is also admitted as being a FRACTION of the total producers - then along comes the Pure Food Act of 1900s (1900-1920s). Heinz got away with a total scam of others using Sodium Benzoate (that others used as a preservative) and he didn't. Heinz pressed the govt and the Pure Food Act to go after them. But, they were punished, fined, and eventually went out of business. Admittedly, we find others using SACCHARIN (false sugar additive for a sweeter taste !) and coat tar (!) (to keep the tomato brightness), and potentially other destructive products - but our modern foods with all the preservatives, phenylalanines, false sugars, high fructose syrups, MSG "natural flavoring" ... that are used ... 50-75% of the total ingredients mentioned on food labels - are preservatives, sugar sweeteners, petrochemical and natural dyes and colors, ... and we restarted the use of SODIUM BENZOATE in our canned foods "today" ! And I dare you to look on any Kraft-Heinz ketchup bottles and see sodium benzoate also being used ... f&&^^% !!!s - and stoopid govt authorities - just like our modern non-govt "authorities" of big pharma, big medicine, ... covi vaccines and lockdown authorities !!! Where is the FDA and Pure Food Act now? Where is the govt federal agency dealing with Pure Vaccine Act now ?

Back in the mid 70s a friend and I found an old trash dump. We dug up all kinds of bottles, utensils, leather shoes, bottles and more. We thought we had discovered a lost treasure. We worked that thing for weeks. Sold the good bottles. Silverware and utensils We cleaned and lost track of the stuff. Good times...

yeah we do metal detect sometimes, and we really should more.. if we get permission at an historic place, then we will usually invite a friend who detects, but sometimes theres so much rust and nails in these pits, that it makes it impossible to detect bc the contents of the pit will just be so saturated with iron. but yeah, we should do that more, it just gets to be alot, digging and filming with typically just the two of us. but im glad you found the channel! hope you enjoy the rest of the content, and thanks for watching and leaving us a comment!

Digging for treasure brings out the kid in us. That would be cool if Tom could get permission from Brent with Ghost Town Living on KZbin, to be able to dig up some treasures for his museum. Cerro Gordo, CA was a booming mining town back in the 1800's. It would also be good exposure for your channel.

@@tommychew6544 I just watched one of Ghost Town Livings latest videos where they installed a huge underground watertank. During the dig, they were finding all kinds of old bottles & relics. It was a rather large settlement for its time where up to 1,000 people worked at the mines.

Great video as always. One issue: The RCA piece is a vacuum tube, not a transistor. Transistors were developed during and after WW2 and weren't in consumer products with regularity until the mid to late 1950s. The tube is probably an 01A or 201A, a common tube around the 20s to 30s.

Y'all ever metal detect your piles or shaker screen them? I've found some good stuff running a hand operated shaker screen. Had a friend over in NM that bought the property that had the old town dump on it. Was incredible what he found every day. Old coins, tokens,...etc. He ended up making more off the property than he paid for it.. Like that tea pot. Can't wait till next week. Saturdays i don't turn this thing on. I rest.

lol.. yeah, we can do that.. we do sometimes and we detect off camera, but we never really find anything except wheat pennies.. but some pits are just un-detectable, because there is so much rust that it triggers the detector basically anytime its near any dirt. but thanks for watching!
